Mangroves represent intricate and ever-changing ecosystems, exhibiting fluctuations in water level, salinity, and nutrient (such as NPK) availability as well as a wide array of unique bacterial communities. Microbial interactions in different components (e.g., tree roots) of the mangrove ecosystem are crucial to understand the ecosystem functioning for potential application in pollution mitigation and agricultural production. This study aimed to isolate phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from the rhizosphere sediment of mangrove (Avicennia sp.) in terms of heavy metals (HMs) and salinity tolerance as well as plant growth promoting (PGP) traits, where the effective PSB were used on Brassica chinensis for their seed priming and growth under salinity stress. The effective two PSB isolates were identified by 16S rRNA, where JKD01 and JKD02 were closely related (99%) to Enterobacter cloacae (OQ271412) and Kocuria rhizophila (OQ271413), respectively. Both the strains exhibited phosphate solubilization, IAA, NH_3, and EPS production ability as well as HMs resistant ability where, E. cloacae (OQ271412) and K. rhizophila (OQ271413), are effectively remove the Cu from the water with 33.23% and 27.54%, respectively. The FTIR results showed functional group shifts (carboxyl, phosphate, and amino) in Cu-treated bacterial biomass and intracellular Cu presence, indicating the involvement of Cu in the bio-sorption and intracellular bioaccumulation process, respectively. The findings suggested PSB tolerance to salinity and HMs are present in mangroves, making them a valuable source for isolating effective bacteria to reduce stress in plants, lower HMs accumulation in mangroves, and aid in the bioremediation of HMs-contaminated environments. © 2023

Objectives: To evaluate changes in the age at menarche in Asian populations. Study design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: We included 548,830 women from six countries in Asia. The data were sourced from 20 cohorts participating in the Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC) and two additional cohort studies: Japan Multi-institutional Collaborative Cohorts (J-MICC), and Japan Nurse Health Study (JNHS) with data on age at menarche. Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate changes in age at menarche by birth year and by country. Results: The study includes data from cohorts in six Asian countries namely, China, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Birth cohorts ranged from 1873 to 1995. The mean age of menarche was 14.0 years with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.4 years, ranged from 12.6 to 15.5 years. Over 100 years age at menarche showed an overall decrease in all six countries. China showed a mixed pattern of decrease, increase, and subsequent decrease from 1926 to 1960. Iran and Malaysia experienced a sharp decline between about 1985 and 1990, with APC values of −4.48 and −1.24, respectively, while Japan, South Korea, and Singapore exhibited a nearly linear decline since the 1980s, notably with an APC of −3.41 in Singapore from 1993 to 1995. Conclusions: Overall, we observed a declining age at menarche, while the pace of the change differed by country. Additional long-term observation is needed to examine the contributing factors of differences in trend across Asian countries. The study could serve as a tool to strengthen global health campaigns. © 2024 The Royal society for Public Health

Carbyne, a one-dimensional (1D) carbon allotrope with alternating triple and single bonds, has the highest known mechanical strength but is unstable to bending, limiting synthesis to short linear chains. Encapsulation within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) stabilizes carbyne, forming confined carbyne (CC), thus enabling further research concerning attractive 1D physics and materials properties of carbyne. While CC has been synthesized in multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) using the arc-discharge method and in double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) via high-temperature high-vacuum (HTHV) method, synthesis in single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) has been challenging due to their fragility under such conditions. In this work, we report a low-temperature method to synthesize CC inside SWCNTs (CC@SWCNT). By annealing SWCNTs containing ammonium deoxycholate (ADC) at 400°C, ADC is converted into CC without damaging the SWCNTs. Raman spectroscopy revealed a strong CC phonon (CC-mode) peak at 1860–1870 cm-1, much stronger than the SWCNT G-band peak, confirming a high fraction of CC in the resulting material. The Raman mapping result showed the uniformity of the CC-mode signal across the entire film sample, proving the high efficiency of this method in synthesizing CC in every SWCNT of appropriate size. Notably, the CC-mode peaks of CC@SWCNT (above 1860 cm-1) are higher than those reported in previous CC@CNT samples (mostly -1). This is attributed to larger SWCNT diameters (>0.95 nm) used in this study, compared to the typical 0.6–0.8 nm range. Larger diameters result in reduced confinement, allowing carbyne to closely resemble free-standing carbyne while remaining stabilized. This low-temperature synthesis of long-chain, nearly freestanding carbyne within large-diameter SWCNTs offers new opportunities for exploring 1D physics and the unique properties of carbyne for potential applications. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

With the progression of civilization, the harmony within nature has been disrupted, giving rise to various ecocidal activities that are evident in every spheres of the earth. These activities have had a profound and far-reaching impact on global health. One significant example of this is the presence of fluoride in groundwater exceeding acceptable limits, resulting in the widespread occurrence of “Fluorosis” worldwide. It is imperative to mitigate the concentration of fluoride in drinking water to meet safety standards. While various defluoridation techniques exist, they often have drawbacks. Biosorption, being a simple, affordable and eco-friendly method, has gained preference for defluoridation. However, its limited commercialization underscores the pressing need for further research in this domain. This comprehensive review article offers a thorough examination of the defluoridation potential of agro-based adsorbents, encompassing their specific chemical compositions and preparation methods. The review presents an in-depth discussion of the factors influencing fluoride biosorption and conducts a detailed exploration of adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic models to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the adsorption process. Furthermore, it evaluates the commercial viability through an assessment of regeneration potential and a cost analysis of these agro-adsorbents, with the aim of facilitating the scalability of the defluoridation process. The elucidation of the adsorption mechanism and recommendations for overcoming challenges in large-scale implementation offer a comprehensive outlook on this eco-friendly and sustainable approach to fluoride removal. In summary, this review article equips readers with a lucid understanding of agro-adsorbents, elucidates their ideal conditions for improved performance, offers a more profound insight into the fluoride biosorption mechanism, and introduces the concept of effective spent adsorbent management.

Objective: Mobile nutrition applications (apps) provide a simple way for individuals to record their diet, but the validity and inherent errors need to be carefully evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and clarify the sources of measurement errors of image-assisted mobile nutrition apps. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 98 students recruited from School of Nutrition and Health sciences, Taipei Medical University. A 3-d nutrient intake record by Formosa Food and Nutrient Recording App (FoodApp) was compared with a 24-h dietary recall (24-HDR). A two-stage data modification process, manual data cleaning, and reanalyzing of prepackaged foods were employed to address inherent errors. Nutrient intake levels obtained by the two methods were compared with the recommended daily intake (DRI), Taiwan. Paired t test, Spearman's correlation coefficients, and Bland–Altman plots were used to assess agreement between the FoodApp and 24-HDR. Results: Manual data cleaning identified 166 food coding errors (12%;stage 1), and 426 food codes with missing micronutrients (32%) were reanalyzed (stage 2). Positive linear trends were observed for total energy and micronutrient intake (all P_trend < 0.05) after the two stages of data modification, but not for dietary fat, carbohydrates, or vitamin D. There were no statistical differences in mean energy and macronutrient intake between the FoodApp and 24-HDR, and this agreement was confirmed by Bland–Altman plots. Spearman's correlation analyses showed strong to moderate correlations (r = 0.834 ∼ 0.386) between the two methods. Participants’ nutrient intake tended to be lower than the DRI, but no differences in proportions of adequacy/inadequacy for DRI values were observed between the two methods. Conclusions: Mitigating errors significantly improved the accuracy of the Formosa FoodApp, indicating its validity and reliability as a self-reporting mobile-based dietary assessment tool. In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. Heavy metal pollution of water is a burning issue of today's world. Among several strategies involved for heavy metal remediation purpose, biomineralization has shown great potential. Of late, research has been focused on developing effective mineral adsorbents with reduced time and cost consumption. In this present paper, the Biologically-Induced Synthetic Manganese Carbonate Precipitate (BISMCP) was produced based on the biologically-induced mineralization method, employing Sporosarcina pasteurii in aqueous solutions containing urea and MnCl₂. The prepared adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET surface area analyzer. EDX analysis showed the elements in the crystal BISMCP were Mn, C, and O. XRD result of BISMCP determined the crystal structure, which is close to rhodochrosite (MnCO₃). Spectral peaks of FTIR at 1641.79 cm⁻¹ confirmed the appearance of C[dbnd]O binding, with strong stretching of CO₃²⁻ in Amide I. From the six kinds of BISMCP produced, sample MCP-6 has the higher specific surface area by BET analysis at 109.01 m²/g, with pore size at 8.76 nm and higher pore volume at 0.178 cm³/g. These specifications will be suitable as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal by adsorption process. This study presents a preliminary analysis of the possibility of BISMCP for heavy metals adsorption using ICP multi-element standard solution XIII (As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn). BISMCP formed from 0.1 MnCl₂ and 30 ml of bacteria volume (MCP-6) produced a better adsorbent material than others concentrations, with the adsorption efficiency of total As at 98.9%, Cr at 97.0%, Cu at 94.7%, Cd at 88.3%, Zn at 48.6%, and Ni at 29.5%. Future work could be examined its efficiency adsorbing individual heavy metals. © 2023

Recently, convergence of nanotechnology and sustainable approaches has emerged as promising strategy for advanced remediation of heavy metals (HMs) from water. However, engineered nanoparticles (ENPs)-derived from freshwater microalgae gained attention as viable alternative, owing their inherent metal tolerance, rapid-growth rates, and versatile metabolic capabilities. This review predominantly focuses on freshwater microalgae-mediated-ENPs, highlighting intracellular/extracellular pathways induced by biomolecules such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, reductases etc., which govern nanoparticle nucleation, stabilization, and functionalization. Subsequently, the review discusses significant types of ENPs including iron, silver, gold, cadmium-sulfide, iron-oxide, nanocomposites, and bio-nano-hybrids nanoparticles, which reported removal efficiency from 21 to 100% of different HMs (lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, etc.). Despite ENPs exhibit significant potential, their large-scale implementation is constrained by challenges such as scaling-up, nutrient-variability, and high turbidity of wastewater. Future research recommended to focus on optimizing biosynthesis parameters, investigating diverse microalgal-strains, incorporating hybrid nano-materials to enhance their stability, reusability, and scalability for sustainable green-technology.
