Ca3Co4O9 is one of the most promising thermoelectric oxide materials at high temperature. Its structure consists of two misfit layers: the CaO-CoO-CaO rocksalt-type (RS) layer and the CdI 2-type CoO2 layer. In this paper, we reported the synthesis of single phase Ca3Co4-xMxO 9 (where M = Fe, Cr, and Ga). Thermoelectric measurements showed the variation of thermoelectric properties depending on the charge state of the substitutional elements. We showed the direct evidence for the location of the substitutional elements in the system using an X-ray absorption spectroscopy technique. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra were fitted with the models. Also, the X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra were compared with the simulated spectra from the first principle calculation. The data analysis show that for Fe and Cr substitution, the Fe and Cr atoms are more likely to be located in the RS layer rather than in the CoO2 as presumed previously. For the Ga case, Ga atoms accommodate both sites;still the majority stays in the RS layer. This is supported by the calculation of the total energy of the system, which showed that the total energy is lower when the substituted elements were located in the RS layer. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this paper, we present the structure and the dynamics of highly charged heavy ions studied through dielectronic recombination (DR) observations performed with the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. By measuring the energy dependence of the ion abundance ratio in the trap at equilibrium, we have observed DR processes for open shell systems very clearly. Remarkable relativistic effects due to the generalized Breit interaction have been clearly shown in DR for highly charged heavy ions. We also present the first result for the coincidence measurement of two photons emitted from a single DR event. © 2011 Springer science+Business Media B.V.

A hurdle to effective science education in schools is often the lack of teaching materials. Teaching science education in the 21st century requires direct visualization and manipulation with effective use and implementation for meaningful learning to occur, thus, unleashing students' potential towards the lesson, boosting their engagement in learning, and applying the knowledge into skills. This study was carried out to develop a do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus. This study was conducted in Cebu Normal University, Philippines with nineteen (19) teachers from the Methods of Teaching science and Instructional Trends and Issues Class who evaluated the apparatus in terms of usability and functionality. The respondents tested the Gel Electrophoresis apparatus by conducting the experiment and they evaluated the apparatus' functionality and usability by using an evaluation sheet which is composed of eleven (11) usability questions, four (4) functionality questions. Suggestions were also asked to improve the said apparatus. After gathering data, the suggestions made by the respondents were incorporated which resulted to the improved D.I.Y. Gel Electrophoresis Apparatus. A manual with the procedures was also designed to further guide students and teachers on how to build the apparatus. With the findings and results obtained in the study, the respondents recommended the usage of the developed do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus in their respective classes and agreed that it is a good source of learning the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological technique. The apparatus was easy to set-up and is of low-cost. During experimentation, the apparatus yielded with a positive result - the separation of food dyes which follows the principle of gel electrophoresis. Moreover, the experiment encourages creativity and it helps with the understanding of the nature of DNA and the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological skills. ©

We present the weak-lensing mass calibration of 124 galaxy clusters and groups at redshift 0.1 ✶,BCG–M–z) relation, using the data sets from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic program. The cluster survey is conducted by the eROSITA X-ray telescope aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) space observatory. The cluster sample is X-ray-selected and optically confirmed with a negligibly low contamination rate (≈ 5%). On a basis of individual clusters, the shear profiles g+ of 96 clusters are derived using the HSC Three-Year (HSCY3) weak-lensing data, while the BCG stellar masses M✶,BCG of 101 clusters are estimated using the SED template fitting to the HSC five-band (grizY) photometry. The observed X-ray photon count rate CR is used as the mass proxy, based on which individual halo masses M are obtained while accounting for systematic uncertainties in the weak-lensing modelling through a simulation-calibrated weak-lensing mass-to-halo-mass (MWL–M–z) relation. The count rate (CR–M–z) and BCG stellar mass (M✶,BCG–M–z) relations are simultaneously constrained in a forward and population modelling. In agreement with the results based on the weak-lensing data from the DES and KiDS surveys, the CR–M–z relation reveals a mass trend of (formula presented) , which is steeper than the self-similar prediction, and no deviation from the self-similar redshift scaling. We obtain the power-law indices BBCG and γBCG of the mass (BBCG = 0.25+0.11−0.15) and redshift (γBCG = 0.87+0.92−0.78) scaling for the M✶,BCG–M–z relation, respectively, and find a strong degeneracy between them. By adopting an informative prior on γBCG to break the BBCG–γBCG degeneracy, we obtain a statistically consistent M✶,BCG–M–z relation, with the mass slope increasing to BBCG = 0.39 ± 0.11. Informed by the prior, our results suggest that the BCG stellar mass at a fixed halo mass has remained stable with a moderate increase at a level of (20 ± 8) % since redshift z ≈ 0.8. Transition metal monosilicides CoSi, CoGe, RhSi, and RhGe in the chiral cubic B20 structure (the CoSi family) have recently been found to host unconventional chiral fermions beyond spin-1/2 Weyl fermions, and also to exhibit exotic physical phenomena such as long Fermi arc surface states, gyrotropic magnetic effect, and quantized circular photogalvanic effect. Thus, exploring novel spin-related transports in these unconventional chiral fermion semimetals may open a new door for spintronics and spin caloritronics. In this paper, we study the intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) and spin Nernst effect (SNE) in the CoSi family based on ab initio relativistic band structure calculations. First, we find that unlike nonchiral cubic metals, the CoSi family have two independent nonzero spin Hall (Nernst) conductivity tensor elements, namely, σxyz and σxzy (αxyz and αxzy) instead of one element. Furthermore, the SHC (σxyz and σxzy) and helicity of the chiral structure are found to be correlated, thus enabling SHE detection of structural helicity and also chiral fermion chirality. Second, the intrinsic SHE and SNE in some of the CoSi family are large. In particular, the calculated spin Hall conductivity (SHC) of RhGe is as large as −140 (ℏ/e)(S/cm). The calculated spin Nernst conductivity (SNC) of CoGe is also large, being −1.3 (ℏ/e)(A/m K) at room temperature. Due to their semimetallic nature with low electrical conductivity, these topological semimetals may have large spin Hall and spin Nernst angles, being comparable to that of platinum metal. The SHC and SNC of these compounds can also be increased by raising or lowering the chemical potential to, e.g., the topological nodes, via either chemical doping or electrical gating. Our findings thus indicate that transition metal monosilicides of the CoSi family not only would provide a material platform for exploring novel spin transports and exotic phenomena in unconventional chiral fermion semimetals, but also could be promising m

In this paper, we study the time evolution of the expectation value of Majorana neutrino with the Schrödinger picture. The operators with the definite lepton number and operators with the definite mass are related to each other by a Bogolyubov transformation. Then the vacuum with the null lepton number is also related to the vacuum for the massive operator and it is written by the superposition of the vacuum for massive field and Majorana pairs condensed states. We choose the state with a definite lepton number L = 1 and the momentum q ≠ 0 as an initial state. By writing the state in terms of the superposition of energy eigenstates, we are able to study the time evolution of the state in the Schrödinger picture.
