Biological images captured by microscopes are characterized by heterogeneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) due to spatially varying photon emission across the field of view convoluted with camera noise. State-of-the-art unsupervised structured illumination microscopy (SIM) reconstruction methods, commonly implemented in the Fourier domain, often do not accurately model this noise. Such methods therefore suffer from high-frequency artifacts, user-dependent choices of smoothness constraints making assumptions on biological features, and unphysical negative values in the recovered fluorescence intensity map. On the other hand, supervised algorithms rely on large datasets for training, and often require retraining for new sample structures. Consequently, achieving high contrast near the maximum theoretical resolution in an unsupervised, physically principled manner remains an open problem. Here, we propose Bayesian-SIM (B-SIM), a Bayesian framework to quantitatively reconstruct SIM data, rectifying these shortcomings by accurately incorporating known noise sources in the spatial domain. To accelerate the reconstruction process, we use the finite extent of the point-spread-function to devise a parallelized Monte Carlo strategy involving chunking and restitching of the inferred fluorescence intensity. We benchmark our framework on both simulated and experimental images, and demonstrate improved contrast permitting feature recovery at up to 25% shorter length scales over state-of-the-art methods at both high- and low SNR. B-SIM enables unsupervised, quantitative, physically accurate reconstruction without the need for labeled training data, democratizing high-quality SIM reconstruction and expands the capabilities of live-cell SIM to lower SNR, potentially revealing biological features in previously inaccessible regimes.

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo-Nambu-Goldston bosons that appear in theories beyond the standard model and are capable of converting to photons in the presence of magnetic fields. Such interaction can have an observable effect on the gamma-ray spectrum of astrophysical targets. We have examined about 40 hours of observations made with the ground-based MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes in the direction of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster. The sources of VHE gamma rays present in the cluster and object of the study are the radiogalaxy NGC1275 and the HBL object IC310. These sources are bright in gamma rays and embedded in the cluster’s high magnetic field, making them very good targets for this kind of study. Having not found statistical evidence for ALPs, we exclude ALPs models with masses in the sub-eV range in line with previous results. Last, we address the potential for gamma-ray-based instruments, both current and future, to identify ALP signals using this analysis technique, finding that the search for wiggles in TeV gamma-ray spectra is very unlikely to be sensitive enough for observations with IACTs. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a symbiotic recurrent nova that shows eruptive events roughly every 15 years. On August 8th, 2021, RS Oph erupted with its latest outburst. This event was detected by a wide range of multi-wavelength (MWL) instruments from radio up to very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. The MAGIC telescopes followed up on optical and high-energy triggers and initiated an observation campaign from August 9th till September 1st. RS Oph is the first nova detected in the VHE gamma-ray energy range. We report on the detection of VHE gamma rays at a significant level of 13.2σ during the first 4 days of RS Oph with the MAGIC telescopes. We combine the VHE emission detected by MAGIC with optical and high energy observations and conclude RS Oph accelerated hadrons during its eruption. Atomic nuclei can be spontaneously deformed into non-spherical shapes as many-nucleon systems. We discuss to what extent a similar deformation takes place in many-electron systems. To this end, we employ several manybody methods, such as the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method, post-Hartree-Fock methods, and the density functional theory, to compute the electron density distribution in atoms. We show that the electron density distribution of openshell atoms is deformed due solely to the single-particle valence orbitals, while the core part remains spherical. This is in contrast to atomic nuclei, which can be deformed collectively. We qualitatively discuss the origin for this apparent difference between atoms and nuclei by estimating the energy change due to deformation. All-optical image processing based on metasurfaces is a swiftly advancing field of technology, due to its high speed, large integrability and inherently low energy requirements. So far, the proposed devices have been focusing on canonical operations, such as differentiations to perform edge detection across all objects in a complex scene. Yet, undesired background noise and clutter can hinder such operations, requiring target selection with digital post-processing which inherently limits the overall accuracy, efficiency and speed. Here, we introduce an optical solution for real-time size-selective image processing and experimentally demonstrate the concept with a metal-dielectric-metal film performing a spatial band-pass filter in momentum space. We show high-resolution (~ 0.9 μm) edge detection and real-time dynamic denoising, ideally suited for bio-imaging applications and target recognitions. This innovative k-space analog operation expands the scope of nonlocal flat optics for analog image processing, ushering in opportunities for ultra-compact and multifunctional image processors. © 2025, CC BY.

We discover two infrared objects that show deep absorption features of H2O, CO2, and CO ices in the AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC) slit-less spectroscopic survey of the Galactic plane in 2.5-13 µm. Both objects are located neither in known star-forming regions nor in known dense clouds. For one of the objects, Object 1, we successfully extract a spectrum from 2.5 to 13 µm, which also shows several absorption features in 5-13 µm, including deep silicate absorption at 10 µm. For the other object, Object 2, only a spectrum from 3.1 to 5 µm is reliably extracted due to the presence of nearby overlapping objects and faint nebulosity. Both objects show warm (> 100 K) CO gas absorption in addition to the ice absorption features, suggesting that they are embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). On the other hand, both objects have spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that peak at around 5 µm and decrease towards longer wavelengths. These characteristics of the SEDs and the presence of deep absorption features cannot easily be accounted for by standard YSO models. They may be explained as background stars behind dense clouds. The present study investigated the potential anti-obesity properties of Citrus depressa Hayata (CDH) juice in HBV transgenic mice, as well as the impact of fermentation on the effectiveness of the juice. The results revealed that fermentation increased the levels of polyphenols and hesperidin in CDH juice. The animal study demonstrated that both juices were effective in mitigating the weight gain induced by a high-fat diet by correcting metabolic parameter imbalances, reducing hepatic lipid accumulation, and reversing hepatic immune suppression. Furthermore, fermented juice exhibited superior efficacy in managing body weight and inhibiting the expansion of white adipose tissue (WAT). Fermented juice significantly enhanced adiponectin production and PPARγ expression in WAT, while also reducing hypertrophy. This study offers valuable insights into the potential role of CDH juices in combating obesity associated with high fat consumption and underscores the promise of CDH juice as a functional beverage. © 2024 The Authors

The Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will play a crucial role in the study of transient gamma-ray sources, such as gamma-ray bursts and flaring active galactic nuclei. The low energy threshold of LSTs makes them particularly well suited for the detection of these phenomena. The ability to detect and analyze gamma-ray transients in real-time is essential for quickly identifying and studying these rare and fleeting events. In this conference, we will present recent advances in the real-time analysis of data from the LST-1, the first prototype of LST located in the Canary island of La Palma. We will discuss in particular the development of new algorithms for event reconstruction and background rejection. These advances will enable rapid identification and follow-up observation of transient gamma-ray sources, making the LST-1 a powerful tool for the study of the dynamic universe. The implementation of this framework in the future Array Control and Data Acquisition System (ACADA) of CTAO will be discussed as well, based on the experience with LST. © 2023, CC BY.

We present a new approach to the pointing determination of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). This method is universal and can be applied to any IACT with minor modifications. It uses the trajectories of the stars in the field of view of the IACT's main camera and requires neither dedicated auxiliary hardware nor a specific data taking mode. The method consists of two parts: firstly, we reconstruct individual star positions as a function of time, taking into account the point spread function of the telescope;secondly, we perform a simultaneous fit of all reconstructed star trajectories using the orthogonal distance regression method. The method does not assume any particular star trajectories, does not require a long integration time, and can be applied to any IACT observation mode. The performance of the method is assessed with commissioning data of the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), showing the method's stability and remarkable pointing performance of the LST-1 telescope. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
