Extensive work has been performed to address the technological and design issues of tubular joints in the last decades. Several international design codes and recommendations explicitly cover the design of tubular joints such as Eurocode 3, ISO14346 and NBR16239. Experimental results on the influence of the chord stresses over the brace load capacity have been published in the literature. These results showed that compressive chord stresses considerably reduce the joint resistance. However, very few studies indicated the same reduction in load carrying capacity for joints under the action of chord tensile forces. To investigate this influence, an experimental program comprising thirteen tests was carried out, i.e. tests without chord axial forces;tests with compressive chord forces;and other ones with tensile chord forces. The obtained results were compared to the design provisions. This assessment indicated that the results obtained for chords without axial forces and with compressive forces, in experiments were safe when compared to the values predicted by all the investigated standards. On the other hand, the results associated with cases with chord tension forces proved to be conservative. Copyright © 2018 by The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction.

This paper presents an experimental and numerical analysis of the chord normal stresses influence on the "T" tubular joints behaviour. The experimental program consisted of six tests: two without chord axial forces;two with compressive chord forces;and the remaining two with tensile chord forces. These results were compared to numerical results obtained with the aid of the ANSYS 12.0 software, and to the design provisions present in the: Eurocode 3;NBR 16239:2013 Brazilian standard and ISO 14346. This assessment indicated that the results obtained for chords without axial forces and with compressive forces, in both experiments and numerical analyses, were safe when compared to the values predicted by all the investigated standards, where the best fit was obtained by ISO 14346. On the other hand, the results associated to cases with chord tension forces proved to be conservative. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In this document, some novel theoretical and computational techniques for constrained approximation of data-driven systems, are presented. The motivation for the development of these techniques came from structure-preserving matrix approximation problems that appear in the fields of system identification and model predictive control, for data-driven systems and processes. The research reported in this document is focused on finite-state approximation of data-driven systems. Some numerical implementations of the aforementioned techniques in the simulation and model predictive control of some generic data-driven systems, that are related to electrical signal transmission models, are outlined.

structural elements made of seam-welded hollow sections are considerably less expensive than their seamless equivalents. This is a strong incentive for their use, but the current steel design standards still contain recommendations for seam-welded hollow sections based on test results performed with sections produced using outdated steel grades and fabrication processes. These design procedures are even more conservative when applied to composite tubular seam-welded elements. This paper presents an experimental campaign performed to investigate the structural behaviour of steel- and concrete-filled composite columns made with seam-welded rectangular hollow profiles. The experiments involved columns with only steel sections, concrete-filled and concrete-filled plus additional reinforcing bars. The main aim of the tests was to identify the contribution of each component in the overall structural response. The results enable an evaluation of the design recommendations present in Eurocode 4 aiming to determine less conservative buckling curves to be used for the investigated composite columns made of seam-welded rectangular hollow sections.

Purpose: Vibrotactile stimulation has been shown to improve sensorimotor integration in the central nervous system, thereby enhancing motor performance in several conditions. Here we aim to address two questions: (1) Would lateral asymmetries yielding handedness influence the force control improvement induced by sinusoidal vibrotactile stimulation? (2) Does the force control improvement depend on finding an optimum stimulus intensity? Methods: Eleven participants performed a visually guided force-matching task, while different intensities of sinusoidal vibrations were applied to the index finger skin. Tasks consisted of abductions of the index fingers of dominant and non-dominant hands at 5% of their maximal voluntary contractions. The force coefficient of variation (CoV) in the condition without vibration was used as the reference (control) for later comparison with five vibration intensities. Also, force CoV in the control condition was compared with those obtained from the optimal vibration selected either from both hands or from a single hand (the one that started the experiment). Results: Despite the known sensory asymmetries in cortical and spinal circuits, handedness did not significantly influence the improvement of force control induced by sinusoidal vibrotactile stimulation during low-intensity contractions. Moreover, there was a significant reduction in force variability irrespective of the criteria used to select the vibration intensity. Conclusion: These findings add to the current knowledge on the effects of sinusoidal vibrotactile stimulation on force control and have potential implications for the development of wearable motor enhancer devices. © 2020, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

This paper is centred on the structural response of double skin composite columns made of two concentric tubes of stainless and carbon steels filled with concrete. These structural solutions can be used in new structures or even in cases where a reinforcement or retrofit is required to enhance their corrosion resistances or structural capacities. An experimental programme was conducted to investigate this innovative structural system by means of comparisons to standard concrete encased tubular steel stub columns. The experimental results widened their applications to cases where a high reserve of post-collapse resistance is required like in seismic design. An assessment of the Eurocode 4 predictions for these tubular columns indicated the design prediction formulae are too conservative, partly explained by the lack of consistent numerical and experimental results that could enable a better design calibration. Stainless steel has been used in several types of constructions. Although many of their mechanical properties are similar to the properties of carbon steel, their nonlinear characteristics imply in different design rules. This non-linearity mainly affects the response to local and flexural buckling. The Eurocode 3: Part 1-4 (2006) stainless steel design standard can be applied to hot rolled, welded and cold formed products, but the provisions of this code are rather conservative, with a limited application due to the lack of experimental data. Thus, one of those areas that require attention and study concerns the behaviour of columns made of rolled stainless steel angles. This paper describes an experimental campaign made on rolled stainless steel angles under axial compression. The tests were performed on stainless steel rolled angles with lengths varying from 150 mm to 1400 mm while the collapse involved: flexural-torsional and flexural buckling modes. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.

Seismic Design Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Near-Source Earthquakes by Using Nonlinear Time History Analyses

Seismic design codes mostly claim that their requirements lead to Life Safety (LS) Performance Level (PL) for buildings. This is while many buildings, designed based on the current codes have shown unacceptable performance, and even have collapsed in some recent earthquakes, particularly near-source events. On this basis, it seems that the code provisions still need further improvement to create sufficient confidence in the engineering community. This study has been conducted to find out how IBC 2009 And ACI 318-2014 codes are effective in providing the LS PL in reinforced concrete multi-story regular buildings with special moment frame lateral load bearing system. For this purpose, a set of multi-story buildings up to 16 stories were considered in the highest seismic hazard zone of Tehran, and were designed based on the codes. Then, a set of near-source three-component accelerograms were employed and scaled according to the code, and a series of nonlinear time history analyses were conducted for all buildings. Roof displacement and acceleration, and base shear forces were calculated, and also the formation trend of plastic hinges and their distribution in the structures were investigated for evaluating the seismic performances. Results show that for some earthquakes the buildings performance exceed LS PL, and even in some cases they reach collapse level.
