The precise detection of cephalometric landmarks on two-dimensional (2D) radiographs or three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) images is a fundamental step in various medical fields, especially in research on orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. Deep learning-based detectors have demonstrated remarkable accuracy in 2D cephalometric analysis, whereas conventional single-view approaches are limited by their reliance on information from a single perspective. This study proposes GeoRefineNet, a novel multistage framework that leverages information from multiple CT scans acquired at various angles. By incorporating geometric knowledge through a 3D heatmap reconstruction process, GeoRefineNet improves robustness, accuracy, and adaptability to various cephalometric configurations. The proposed framework predicts 3D landmark positions on CT images, effectively addressing challenges associated with high-dimensional input data and limited training examples. GeoRefineNet surpasses the existing state-of-the-art models in the 2D and 3D domains, as demonstrated by its superior performance on numerical and clinical datasets. These findings indicate that GeoRefineNet offers a promising avenue for improving the accuracy and reliability of cephalometric landmark detection fostering further advances in clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. Association of maternal multi-metal exposure and dyslipidemia: a study of air pollution on pregnancy outcomes

Background: Exposure to air pollutants, including heavy metals, is a major environmental concern of public health and these environmental toxicants have been associated with pregnancy complications. Objectives: An air pollution on pregnancy outcome (APPO) study was performed to investigate the adverse effects of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) exposure on pregnancy outcomes. This study examined the association between maternal urinary metal mixtures and pregnancy complications, including dyslipidemia and preterm birth (PTB). Methods: The concentrations of 16 metals were measured in 60 urine samples collected during the second trimester pregnancy. Logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to analyze the single and overall effects of metal exposure on pregnancy complications, respectively. Results: Logistic regression analysis showed a significant difference in urinary Ni and Zn concentrations between those exposed to high and low concentrations of fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 µm (PM_2.5) and those not exposed. Four metals (Ni, Sc, Mo, and Cs) were positively associated with total cholesterol (TC) levels, but not with triglyceride (TG) levels and PTB. The BKMR model showed that the overall mixture of 16 metals was positively correlated with high TC and TG levels during the third trimester of pregnancy, and the individual effects of Mo and Pb were the most significant. However, we were only able to identify a trend between maternal exposure to metal mixtures and PTB. Conclusions: BKMR analyses showed a positive association between exposure to multi-metal mixtures and higher maternal TC and TG levels, a factor that contributes to PTB. Therefore, this also suggests that multi-metal exposure during pregnancy may be a potential risk factor for PTB. © The Author(s) 2025.

Basal and Edge Plane Activity of Two-Dimensional Dirac Semimetal Nite2 for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

. Nickel ditelluride (NiTe2), one of group-10 transition metal dichalcogenides, has shown intriguing surface states originating from its topological semi-metallicity. Here, we demonstrate abnormal catalytic activities at the NiTe2 surface for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We investigate the differences in catalytic activities at the basal and edge planes of NiTe2 using a micro-sized electrochemical reactor. The basal plane is found to be more active than the edge plane, resulting in a current density at the basal plane of NiTe2 exceeding 800 mA/cm2 with a small overpotential of -0.162 V. We conduct ab initio calculations to estimate the intrinsic catalytic activities of HER on the basal and edge planes of NiTe2. Interestingly, our calculation results suggest that the active sites at the edge plane are electrochemically more active than those at the basal plane. The discrepancy between the experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for the crystal-orientation-dependent HER activity highlights that the specialty of a topological semimetal plays a vital role in determining the HER rate for NiTe2 nanoparticle catalysts © 2025, The Authors. Optimizing waste pre-collection model in Indonesian communities: comparing drop-off and door-to-door models through social cost–benefit analysis

Indonesia lacks an established waste pre-collection system resulting 90% waste ending up in open-dumping site. This study identifies a 35-m radius per drop-off points as the most optimal model. The City of South Tangerang, on 21 residential areas with a population of 63,157, being examine. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro and Python scripting, 12 scenarios were developed, model drop-off radii of 15–45 m and household limits of 4–32 per drop-off point, including combined models. Spatial clustering KD-Tree algorithm and Proximity-based Routing were employed to determine collection placements and walking distances. Heatmap and ANOVA tests evaluated conformity with residential characteristics. Model then organized into eight frequency schemes, utilizing motorcart and handcart systems with 4-day and 2-day pickup schedules for waste bank and in-house compost programs. This optimized model reduces collection time by up to 81% and costs by 50% compared to traditional door-to-door systems, achieving cost reductions of $30–$38 USD per ton and lowering CO₂ emissions. The discussion covers opportunity costs and occupational risk. Recess gate etching is a critical technique for achieving enhancement-mode (E-mode) AlGaN/GaN high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) because the interface is susceptible to the etching damage. This study fabricates recess gates using the neutral beam etching (NBE) technique. By adjusting the aperture thickness in the NBE apparatus, we simulate both NB-mode and plasma-mode etching. The electrical characteristics of E-mode HEMTs fabricated using these two modes are analyzed and compared through DC, noise, and pulsed IV measurements. The results demonstrate that NB-recessed HEMTs exhibit superior performance. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model's output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant global health concern, affecting millions worldwide, with particular prevalence among specific vulnerable populations. Women of sexually active age, post-menopausal women, pregnant women, individuals with diabetes, catheterized patients, childs and older indivisuals face heightened risk due to various physiological, hormonal, and anatomical factors. While anatomical abnormalities and behavioral factors contribute to UTI susceptibility, the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance has necessitated exploration of alternative treatment approaches. Non-antibiotic interventions, including probiotics, cranberry products, and natural remedies, are gaining attention for their potential role in UTI prevention and management. Recent studies suggest the efficacy of probiotics and plant extracts in promoting urinary tract health and preventing bacterial colonization. Additionally, research highlights the importance of dietary factors, such as vitamin D and probiotic intake, in reducing UTI susceptibility. This review examines the emerging shift toward non-drug strategies, offering a more comprehensive approach to UTI management while addressing the pressing concern of antibiotic resistance.

Inadequate maternal nutrition can predispose offspring to obesity and chronic metabolic diseases. This study used a rat model to investigate the impact of maternal high-fat diet-induced metabolic disturbances and the therapeutic potential of WIKIM51, a Weissella confusa strain derived from kimchi. Offspring of high-fat diet-fed dams were assigned to either a normal diet (HF) or continued high-fat diet (OB). At 10 weeks of age, rat offspring received WIKIM51 supplementation for 6 weeks. Metabolic outcomes were assessed at 16 weeks, and two-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the effects of diet and probiotic treatment. Male offspring in the HF and OB groups showed increased body and liver weight, fat accumulation, and elevated blood metabolic markers, along with increased hepatic triglyceride levels and lipogenesis marker expression. WIKIM51 supplementation significantly improved these parameters in males, but not in females. These findings suggest that kimchi-derived probiotics may have sex-specific effects on transgenerational metabolic programming. © 2025

Prediction of enthalpy of vaporization for particulate matter through molecular dynamics using OPLS force field

Chemical pollutant molecules dispersed in the atmosphere in the form of particulate matter are harmful to humans. Accurate data sets on the volatility of particulate matter components are required to address the ongoing issues of air pollution, as volatility determines the distribution of particulate components between gas and particle phases. Herein, we estimate the volatility for representative components of particulate matter by calculating the enthalpy of vaporization using molecular dynamics simulations. Compared with conventional static prediction methods such as Hansen solubility parameter and conductor-like screening model methods, the molecular dynamics method proves to effectively and accurately predict enthalpies of vaporization for a wide range of particulate matter components without additional parameter optimization. Using the molecular dynamics approach, we calculate enthalpies of vaporization for 71 representative organic species that could be primary particulate matter sources. The predicted enthalpy of vaporization values can be used as a fundamental data set for future air quality modeling and scientific understanding of the formation of particulate matter. Given the limitations in experimentally characterizing the volatility of various components in particulate matter, we envisage that our dynamical method based on the evaluation of intermolecular interactions can also be used to study the dynamics associated with the formation of particulate matter in addition to providing thermodynamic data. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
