One-step flow synthesis of size-controlled polymer nanogels in a fluorocarbon microfluidic chip

Synthetic polymer nanoparticles (NPs) with biomimetic properties are ideally suited for different biomedical applications such as drug delivery and direct therapy. However, bulk synthetic approaches can suffer from poor reproducibility and scalability when precise size control or multi-step procedures are required. Herein, we report an integrated microfluidic chip for the synthesis of polymer NPs. The chip could sequentially perform homopolymer synthesis and subsequent crosslinking into NPs without intermediate purification. This was made possible by fabrication of the chip with a fluorinated elastomer and incorporation of two microfluidic mixers. The first was a long channel with passive mixing features for the aqueous RAFT synthesis of stimuli-responsive polymers in ambient conditions. The polymers were then directly fed into a hydrodynamic flow focusing (HFF) junction that rapidly mixed them with a crosslinker solution to produce NPs. Compared to microfluidic systems made of PDMS or glass, our chip had better compatibility and facile fabrication. The polymers were synthesized with high monomer conversion and the NP size was found to be influenced by the flow rate ratio between the crosslinker solution and polymer solution. This allowed for the size to be predictably controlled by careful adjustment of the fluid flow rates. The size of the NPs and their stimuli-responses were studied using DLS and SEM imaging. This microfluidic chip design can potentially streamline and provide some automation for the bottom-up synthesis of polymer NPs while offering on-demand size control. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Research has been carried out to monitor vehicle tires before they are used and can reduce damage, including overcoming vehicle fuel waste because air pressure is continuously monitored. This research aims to utilize the MPX5500DP sensor as an air pressure device, the LM35 sensor as a temperature reader, and a buzzer based on IoT to build a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The MPX5500DP and LM35 sensor inputs to the Arduino Uno microcontroller are distributed by the NodeMCU, fitted with a Wi-Fi module. The Blynk application sends and displays the data on a smartphone using the IoT-based. Based on this research, data on the percentage of errors in monitoring air pressure and tire temperature on vehicles were obtained by comparing the data to the pressure gauge and thermometer: 1-the results of the average reading of the sensor error value. MPX5500DP air pressure against pressure gauge is 5.3%. 2-the average reading of the LM35 sensor error value on the temperature thermometer is 6.8%. With this research, the air pressure and temperature in the tires can be monitored in real-Time via a smartphone using the IoT-based. © 2022 IEEE.

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes strongly affect local hydrology and sediment *** current study focused on a basin in the Brazilian Amazon and had the following three objectives:(1) to perform an effective diagnosis of flow and sediment yield,(2) to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes over the last 40 years on the hydro-sedimentological variables,and (3) to investigate the impacts of the possible trends or breaking points in the flow,surface runoff,and sediment yield *** Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model validation showed that the simulated results were consistent with the data measured in the dynamic reproduction of flow ***,changes in LULC altered surface runoff,sediment yield,and flow according to the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric *** was also observed that the sub-basins in which pastureland is predominant are more susceptible to increased surface runoff and sediment *** to trend and homogeneity tests,these sub-basins had break points in the time series of these *** the other hand,in the sub-basins whose land cover is predominantly forest,the time series is homogeneous and *** current study highlighted the impacts that 40 years of LULC changes in an Amazonian basin had on hydro-sedimentological variables,which,in turn,can play an important role in changing the hydrological cycle,consequently these changes can also impact diverse human activities in the region,such as agribusiness,livestock,energy production,food security,and public water ***,it is concluded that the SWAT model is a good estimator of hydro-sedimentological processes in Amazonian basins and can be used by decision makers in the management of water and environmental resources.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education. © 2023 IEEE.

OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of calcium on the response towards doxorubicin,a widely used chemotherapeutic agent in the clinic,using fission yeast(Schizosaccharomycespombe)and human cancer cells(MCF7)This project built on a previously performed genome-wide search of doxorubicin-resistance(DXR)genes in Schizosaccharomycespombefission yeast,which identified a host of genes that counteracted doxorubicin *** Growth fitness of Schizosaccharomycespombe knock-out mutants of doxorubicin-resistance genes were tested on varying concentrations of calcium,doxorubicin or calcium+*** growth fitness experiments were also performed on MCF7 breast cancer *** We found that a subset of null mutants of DXR genes show concurrent hypersensitivity to calcium and ***,their hypersensitivity towards doxorubicinwas suppressed by *** phenotype was dependent on the integrity of the proton pump vacuolar-ATPase(V-ATPase)as the disruption of the V-ATPase-assembly factors(Rav1 and Vph2)abolished the suppressive effect of *** Our findings uncovered an unexpected negative regulation of chemotherapeutic drug efficacy by dietary micronutrient that may caution against the concurrent consumption of calcium-rich dietary products alongside doxorubicin treatment.

The NANOOS-Pilot project (Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing systems) is an ongoing effort to develop coastal ocean observing assets for the integrated observation of the estuaries and shorelines of the Pacific Northwest. The project is actively building nowcast and predictive capabilities for this environment, as well as interactive access to archival data, real-time data, and selected forecasts. In addition to the potential benefits accrued to the many sectors that depend upon the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest, there are a number of education opportunities related to ocean observatories involving undergraduate and graduate institutions, K-12 schools and adult literacy programs. In this work, we describe some ocean technology applications of the NANOOS-Pilot and focus on the educational use of the system in a senior-level Civil engineering course on Coastal Infrastructure. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The authors previously developed a scaffold‐free tissue‐engineered construct(TEC)from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs).Although the TEC exhibited even cell distribution and was successfully applied for cartilage repair in animal models,it is unsuitable for relatively large‐scale cartilage defects due to its small *** solve the problem,the authors recently developed a novel biomaterial,a centrifugally compressed cell‐collagen combined construct(C^(6))from a mixture of MSCs and atelocollagen,both of which are subjected to *** results of the previous study indicated that C^(6) exhibited high cell viability(70%)and sufficient cell distribution similar to that of the *** the present study,the morphology and gene expression of C^(6) were *** ex-amination indicated that C6 is six times thicker(approximately 1 mm)than the TEC after a 7‐day *** C^(6) remained unchanged in scale with increased cell density after a 21‐day *** electron microscopic observation indicated that C^(6) exhibited interconnected and porous microstructures,while the TEC had close‐knit *** transcriptase‐polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated that the expression of sex‐determining region Y‐box 9 and runt‐related transcription factor 2 was significantly higher in C^(6) than that in TEC.

This paper proposes an effective algorithm for feature selection (ACOFS) that uses a global Ant Colony Optimization algorithm (ACO) search strategy. To make ACO effective in feature selection, our proposed algorithm uses an effective local search in selecting significant features. The novelty of ACOFS lies in its effective balance between ant exploration and exploitation using new pheromone update and heuristic information computation rules to generate a subset of a smaller number of significant features. We evaluate algorithm performance using seven real-world benchmark classification datasets. Results show that ACOFS generates smaller subsets of significant features with improved classification accuracy.

A tissue bath system, to be used as an alternative to complex perfusion chambers, was constructed for use in cardiac electrophysiological studies. This system consists of an acrylic chamber to hold circulating physiological medium such as DMEM, suspended in a water bath warmed by a hot plate. Temperature and pH were controlled to mimic physiological conditions. Rat and porcine cardiac tissues, were used to test viability of the conditions presented in the bath system. Using a cardiac mapping system, the tissues were stimulated and responses recorded. From the recordings we were able to calculate conduction velocities and spatial dispersion of activation indices. The results are comparable to previous in-vivo work, which suggests that the tissue bath system design can maintain tissue viability. This tissue bath system is a relatively simple alternative for ex-vivo testing of cardiac tissues. © 2011 IEEE.
