Interoception, or the perception and regulation of body signals by the central nervous system, is critical for maintaining homeostasis and coordination of behaviors. Deciphering the mechanisms of interoception requires identifying pathways and decoding of diverse signals across the brain-body axis. These studies are enabled by tools to modulate and record physiological processes in the brain and visceral organs. While numerous advanced neurotechnologies are well-established in the brain, these techniques often offer limited utility for other organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract, heart, liver, or bladder. In this review, we highlight recent advances in technologies for recording and modulation of visceral organ physiology in small animals in vivo, with a focus on implantable bioelectronic organ interfaces that can be deployed in behaving animals. We discuss how such interfaces are made possible through innovations in materials and electronics and outline unmet technological challenges in interoception research.

Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Stability analysis plays a central role in nonlinear system theory and engineering application. Over the past few years, the stability analysis of fuzzy systems has been proposed and there are many successful applications in practical engineering. Therefore, in this paper firstly proposed is the stability analysis on oceanic structure by fuzzy models. In the present study, Takagi-Sugeno （T-S） fuzzy model is proposed for a time delay tension leg platform （TLP） system subjected to an external wave force. In terms of stability analysis, linear matrix inequality （LMI） conditions are derived via Lyapunov theory to guarantee the stability of the TLP system.

Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous contaminant in the indoor environment that is both a carcinogen and irritant. The goal of this project is to develop a smartphone-based app for use by citizen scientists or researchers that can be paired with low-cost colorimetric badges for detection of indoor formaldehyde. We conducted both national and geographically-targeted surveys prior to app design. We have subsequently developed the app and conducted a beta test. Surveys of 147 individuals indicated broad public interest in formaldehyde testing using smartphone technology. Testing of the badges indicated consistent change in illumination with increasing formaldehyde exposure. Beta testing indicated users were able to navigate the existing app, and highlighted areas for improvement including incorporation of public surveys. Planned future analysis includes extensive calibration testing and a community-based field test. © 2018 15th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2018. Laser irradiation has been investigated as a method of fabricating atomically-thin crystals from layered two-dimensional (2D) materials with precise thickness control. However, during laser irradiation, inevitable structural changes can occur in the 2D materials due to the high thermal energy, altering their physical and chemical properties and introducing disorder, which has hindered the study and use of the intrinsic properties of atomically-thin materials. In this study, we report a laser thinning method using a new coating material, a layered silica-based nanocomposite (SNC), that preserves the pristine crystal structure of a polymorphic 2D material, MoTe2, down to an atomically thin geometry. The nano-porous coating of layered silica-based nanocomposite (SNC) was robust against thermal heating and behaved as a good thermal-protective and oxygen-resistant material in the laser thinning process. Therefore, the SNC-coated MoTe2 flakes were successfully thinned down to atomically-thin geometry, while preserving their 2H structure. Accordingly, our SNC coating of 2D materials is a promising way to engineer the phase and geometry of polymorphic 2D materials, enabling versatile applications in various optoelectronic, spintronic, and electronic devices. © 2023, The Authors. Over the past billion years, the fungal kingdom has diversified to more than two million species, with over 95% still undescribed. Beyond the well-known macroscopic mushrooms and microscopic yeast, fungi are heterotrophs that feed on almost any organic carbon, recycling nutrients through the decay of dead plants and animals and sequestering carbon into Earth’s ecosystems. Human-directed applications of fungi extend from leavened bread, alcoholic beverages and biofuels to pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics and psychoactive compounds. Conversely, fungal infections pose risks to ecosystems ranging from crops to wildlife to humans;these risks are driven, in part, by human and animal movement, and might be accelerating with climate change. Genomic surveys are expanding our knowledge of the true biodiversity of the fungal kingdom, and genome-editing tools make it possible to imagine harnessing these organisms to fuel the bioeconomy. Here, we examine the fungal threats facing civilization and investigate opportunities to use fungi to combat these threats. © This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US;foreign copyright protection may apply 2025.

Styrene is an important chemical in the petrochemical industry. In recent years, there have been sporadic releases, runaway reactions, fires, and thermal explosion accidents incurred by styrene and its derivatives worldwide. The purpose of this study was to estimate the impact of styrene and its derivatives of α-methylstyrene (AMS) and trans-β-methylstyrene (TBMS) contacting with benzaldehyde. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the thermokinetic parameters estimated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal activity monitor III (TAM III). TAM III was used to determine the fundamental thermokinetics under various isothermal temperatures, 80, 90 and 100C. This autocatalytic reaction was demonstrated in thermal curves. After styrene was contacted with benzaldehyde, the exothermic onset temperature (T 0) and the total heat of reaction (Q total) were altered by DSC tests. When benzaldehyde is mixed with AMS and TBMS, the reaction time will be shorter but the enthalpy reduced, as revealed by TAM III tests. As AMS and TBMS, respectively, were contacted with benzaldehyde, both exothermic phenomena were changed during the reaction excursion. According to the results of this research, an operator should dictate the oxygen concentration in order to avoid any potential hazards during handling and transportation. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

Computer-based procedures (CBPs) were developed to overcome the drawback of the paper-based procedures (PBPs). In addition, CBPs are intended to increase the operator performance by reducing time for completing the task, reducing workload and reducing errors in transition between procedures, especially in a nuclear emergency condition, because all the necessary data can be provided at the operator consoles. In an emergency condition, operators need sufficient information which help them to mitigate the accident without any mistakes. However, despite the benefits of CBPs, most of CBPs do not provide necessary information about the impact of their counteractions following the operating procedures to the system components and future plant behavior. Therefore, this paper proposes a preliminary design of a CBP with the desirable features of additional information (components influenced and future plant behavior). The additional information is derived from modeling the counteractions of mitigating an accident of PWR plant following the emergency operating procedure using control function in multilevel flow modeling (MFM) and by implementing influence propagation rules. Then, the additional information is extracted and displayed on the CBP user interface. The purpose of providing the additional information is to give operators clear views about the purposes of the procedure steps and the impact of their counteractions in executing procedure steps which will increase the situation awareness of operators and reduce the potential of human errors. Andrias davidianus(Chinese giant salamander,CGS)is the largest and oldest extant amphibian species in the world and is a source of prospective functional food in ***,the progress of functional peptides mining was slow due to lack of reference genome and protein sequence *** this study,we illustrated full-length transcriptome sequencing to interpret the proteome of CGS meat and obtain 10703 coding DNA *** functional annotation and amino acid composition analysis,we have discovered various genes related to signal transduction,and 16 genes related to *** have also found vast variety of functional peptides through protein coding sequence(CDS)analysis by comparing the data obtained with the functional peptide ***-Pro-Ile predicted by the CDS analysis was released from the CGS meat through enzymatic hydrolysis,suggesting that our approach is *** study suggested that transcriptomic analysis can be used as a reference to guide polypeptide mining in CGS meat,thereby providing a powerful mining strategy for the bioresources with unknown genomic and proteomic sequences.
