A planing hull high-speed ferry with a stepped hull becomes a well-liked mode of water transportation for archipelago countries. On the other hand, the shape of steps on the bottom hull has not been recently taken into explicit consideration regarding the speed requirement and hydrodynamic properties. In this study, the step W shapes, were adopted to find the improved hydrodynamic performance in the planing conditions. To provide a more precise prediction of the pressure, velocity fields, and void fraction, the CFD was applied the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and coupled with Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) to capture air cavity The numerical conditions of the planing hull were trimmed by the stern with 2, and 3 degrees. This study discussed the air cavity that occurred behind the stepped area that can affect the hydrodynamic behaviour. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Industrial development promotes the production of various electronics for contributing to our life. On the other hand, various electronics occur the compatibility trouble about the communication standard. Especially, the compatibility of physical connection standards such as USB or Ethernet is required without the converter of the connector. One way to solve the compatibility of physical connection is the universal connector that enables optimal communication according to the connection partner. The universal connector can be realized by single-wire handshake of pin assignment which automatically negotiates the voltage signal or the role of the pin. After the connection between the pin, all connected pin conducts the single-wire handshake for determining the pin assignment. The single-wire pin assignment handshake consists of the physical half-duplex communication that conducts transmission and reception on one connection line. The physical half-duplex communication requires the single-wire handshake of the communication speed because the multi-pin cannot use for the communication. In addition, the communication speed cannot determine in advance because the connection partner is assumed various for the compatibility. In this paper, we propose the single-wire handshake which automatically adjusts the communication speeds for the universal connector. Moreover, the feasibility of our method is evaluated by the analysis result of the voltage signal between electronics. © 2019 IEEE.

Do robots facilitate life review narratives of older adults? A preliminary study

Background: Life review is a process in which people retrospect and find meaning in past life events, and synthesize these experiences into a narrative. It is usually conducted collaboratively for older adults through a listening partner who works to motivate and stimulate the conversation. Objective: This study aimed to compare narratives of older adults with human and non-human listening partners during a life review session and to determine whether the participants felt safer in disclosing their private experiences or thoughts without fear of social judgement. Method: We conducted life reviews with 5 older adults using 2 types of speaking partners: a human and a robot. The partner asked a set of structured life review questions designed to trigger a review of past events and gave controlled responses. Two life review sequences comprising 4 sessions each were completed;the first 4 were with a human partner, followed by 4 with a robot partner. There was a 4-week interval between the sequences. The transcribed life review conversations were compared and analyzed qualitatively. Results: When talking with a human partner, life review narratives showed more awareness of generation gaps compared to the narratives formed with the robot. In contrast, their narratives to the robot partner included more universally transmissive values (Watt & Wong, 1991;Wong & Watt, 1991). Conclusion: This preliminary study was the first attempt to gauge the effects of conducting a life review with robots as partners. The outcome suggests that life review with robots can provide older adults with a unique environment to tell their personal life narratives by allowing them to have different perspectives while reviewing their past. Utilizing both humans and robots in life reviews could help older adults to construct extensive and abundant life narratives in the future. © 2021. Gerontechnology. All Rights Reserved.

In the quest to minimize energy waste,the energy performance of buildings(EPB)has been a focus because building appliances,such as heating,ventilation,and air conditioning,consume the highest ***,effective design and planning for estimating heating load(HL)and cooling load(CL)for energy saving have become *** this vein,efforts have been made to predict the HL and CL using a univariate ***,this approach necessitates two models for learning HL and CL,requiring more computational ***,the one-dimensional(1D)convolutional neural network(CNN)has gained popularity due to its nominal computa-tional complexity,high performance,and low-cost hardware *** this paper,we formulate the prediction as a multivariate regression problem in which the HL and CL are simultaneously predicted using the 1D *** the building shape characteristics,one kernel size is adopted to create the receptive fields of the 1D CNN to extract the feature maps,a dense layer to interpret the maps,and an output layer with two neurons to predict the two real-valued responses,HL and *** the 1D data are not affected by excessive parameters,the pooling layer is not applied in this ***,the use of pooling has been questioned by recent *** performance of the proposed model displays a comparative advantage over existing models in terms of the mean squared error(MSE).Thus,the proposed model is effective for EPB prediction because it reduces computational time and significantly lowers the MSE.

In general, public or private organizations or companies have used information-based technology as a support to improve business performance to be more effective and efficient in order to achieve a company's business goals. Given the large contribution of information technology in the application of hotel applications as a supporting information system, it is a vital system that must avoid risks that can hinder and cause harm to the hotel management business processes. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out risk management using the COBIT 5 framework to manage possible risks that may occur based on the APO12 (Manage Risk) domain. From the evaluation results of the data obtained through observation and interviews as well as the calculation of the results of the questionnaire based on 6 APO12 subdomains, the results of the risk management level capability assessment in hotel applications are still at level 3 or have reached the level of established process with the target to be achieved at level 4 resulting in a gap of 1 level. Based on the results obtained, it is necessary to propose recommendations that can be used by hotels in improving the application of information technology risk management so that in the future it can achieve the expected target level so that the APO12 level of capability can increase and become more optimal. © 2023 IEEE.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). We propose a novel method to predict oxygen uptake (Vo2) dynamics during walking based on transfer function (TF) analysis by use of a triaxial accelerometer. A TF between the instantaneous amplitude (υ (t)) of 3D vector of acceleration and Vo2 during pseudorandom binary sequence treadmill walking was evaluated by applying autoregressive with extra input model. To evaluate the accuracy of the estimated TF, Vo2 response was predicted by convolving the determined impulse response with corresponding υ (t) obtained from square-wave work rate transition. The method was capable of predicting Vo2 dynamics reasonably well. The root mean squared error was 0.07 l/min (range 0.04 to 0.12 l/min). We conclude that Vo2 dynamics can be estimated from υ (t) by using an individual TF estimate. The proposed method should be useful for estimating Vo2 dynamics during walking. Further research should be needed whether the method could be applied to the ambulatory activities of walking. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

We have been developing an intellectual manufacturing process applying IT (V-Cam system fabrication processes) based on Volume-CAD (VCAD) system which can express internal information of materials. This paper introduces the ultra-precision grinding, ray tracing (optical path) simulation software 'V-Opt' and the measurement of actual optical functions in the development of optical element taking gradient refractive index (GRIN) lens with functionally graded material properties as a model. In finish ground GRIN lens using SD#8000 wheel, the P-V (Peek to Value) of 27.07 nm, surface roughness (Ra) of 1.83 nm is obtained. 'V-Opt' developed for GRIN lens have two main functions;one is the visualizations of ray tracing and the other is the evaluation of spot diagram and focal length.

Conductive Mof Coating for Suppressing the Mn Dissolution in Limn2o4 Toward Long-Life Lithium-Ion Batteries

Spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4, denoted LMO) is one of the promising cathode materials with non-toxicity, high operating voltage, and low cost. However, structural collapse during battery cycling — caused by Mn dissolution and the Jahn-Teller effect — is a critical disadvantage, reducing cycle retention, particularly at high temperatures. In this investigation, to solve these critical issues of LMO cathode, we introduce Cu3(HITP)2, a conductive two-dimensional (2D) MOF as a surface coating material through a simple process. Coating the conductive 2D Cu3(HITP)2 MOF increases the electrical conductivity and shows the effect of suppressing the dissolution of Mn by enriching the surface of LMO with Mn4+. By suppressing Mn dissolution, structural stability also improves, resulting in offsetting all the inherent problems of LMO. As a result, at 50 °C, CuHITP–LMO exhibits an initial capacity of 98.7 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1 and achieved a capacity of 74.5 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles, indicating outstanding cyclability. This research highlights the potential of conductive 2D MOF to improve the electrochemical performances of battery cathode. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
