The Department of Technology systems (TSYS) at East Carolina University has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. Evolutionary algorithms are heuristic methods that have yielded promising results for solving nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and multi-modal optimization problems in the power systems area. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to problem solving than do classical evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies. DE also incorporates an efficient way of self-adapting mutation using small populations. The potentialities of DE are its simple structure, easy use, convergence property, quality of solution, and robustness. This paper proposes a new approach for solving economic load dispatch problems with valve-point effect. The proposed method combines the DE algorithm with the generator of chaos sequences and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique to optimize the performance of economic dispatch problems. The DE with chaos sequences is the global optimizer, and the SQP is used to fine-tune the DE run in a sequential manner. The combined methodology and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 13 and 40 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. The proposed combined method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving load dispatch problems with the valve-point effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. This work presents a new global optimization algorithm based on differential evolution (DE) method and DE combined with chaotic sequences (DEC) given by logistic map. In this paper, the optimal shape design of Loney's solenoids benchmark problem is carried out by DE and DEC algorithms. The results of DE and DEC approaches are also investigated and their performance compared with those reported in the literature. © 2006 IEEE.

The problem of failure occurrence in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) tends to increase according to their complexity leading to time-consuming tasks as the localisation and repairing. The occurrence of failures during the exploitation stage can deeply modify the FMS performances or its availability. We want to investigate the maintenance integration into a control-monitoring framework, from the control system's early design stage to the maintenance policies execution, so as to improve production time and minimize unplanned costly breakdowns of FMS. This paper proposes a modular and hierarchic control-monitoring-maintenance architecture (CMM) for FMS based on Petri nets with objects (PNO). These efforts acts as a basis for the control architecture of a robot-driven flexible cell, connected to the Ethernet-TCP/IP. © 2006 IEEE.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the swarm intelligence theory, this paper discusses the use of PSO approaches using an operator and based on the Gaussian probability distribution function as a population space of a cultural algorithm, called cultural Gaussian PSO (GPSO-CA). Cultural algorithms are mechanisms that incorporate domain knowledge obtained during the evolutionary process, which increase the efficiency of the search process. These approaches are employed in a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. © 2006 IEEE.

Document clustering has been used as a core technique in managing vast amount of data and providing needed information. In on-line environments, generally new information gains more interests than old one. Traditional clustering focuses on grouping similar documents into clusters by treating each document with equal weight. We proposed a novelty-based incremental clustering method for on-line documents that has biases on recent documents. In the clustering method, the notion of 'novelty' is incorporated into a similarity function and a clustering method, a variant of the K-means method, is proposed. We examine the efficiency and behaviors of the method by experiments. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a new discrete-time sliding-mode control design for multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with tuning parameters by particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO is a kind of evolutionary algorithm based on a population of individuals and motivated by the simulation of social behavior instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Several control algorithms are presented, two decoupling design and six new approaches of the coupling design of sliding-mode control without the necessity of calculate the process interactor matrix. SMC needs a design tool for parameter configuration and efficient practically to deal with multivariable processes. Simulations are carried out using both decoupling and coupling discrete-time SMC designs. Results shown that the new proposed approach for designing the discrete-time coupling SMC is a powerful tool and it performs better than the decoupling design, usually utilized in MIMO process. The simulations are assessed on a robotic manipulator of two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF), that constitute a MIMO nonlinear coupling dynamic system, with treatment of payload mass and link length variations. Simulation results show that the application of this control strategy effectively improve the trajectory tracking precision of position and velocity variables. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Advanced conceptions to design industrial control systems are, in general, dependent of mathematical models of the controlled process. Also, the task of the controllers is to achieve an optimum performance when facing with various types of disturbances that are, sometimes, unknown in practical applications. An advanced methodology for control design is the variable structure control (VSC) with sliding mode. This paper considers the non-linear control of industrial processes based on self-tuning discrete VSC technique. A novel and systematic VSC design methodology is proposed, which integrates an estimator based on recursive least square algorithm, a discrete quasi-sliding surface and a optimization method. Contrary to the trial and error selection of the variable structure feedback gains reported in the literature, the selection in present work is done using differential evolution (DE) optimization, an evolutionary computation technique, with a new operator based on normative knowledge of cultural algorithms. The proposed design has been applied to a control valve described by a non-linear Wiener model. Numerical simulation results reveal that the new DE approach is applicable and promising for the VSC design. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.
