In this paper, signals for acoustic beacons with M sequence are evaluated with various parameters for self-localization of mobile robot. The effect of (i) baud rate, (ii) carrier frequency and (iii) order of M sequence on DOA estimation error and localization error are evaluated by computer simulation. As a result, localization is possible with same class or more precision compared to the result from sound beacon with three chirp signals within 5 kHz-18 kHz by choosing the appropriate parameters, which are (i)baud rate is more than around 8 kHz and (ii)carrier frequency is 10 kHz. Particularly, (i) baud rate and (ii) carrier frequency have influence on the localization error. However, the localization error do not change into even a further baud rate in this condition if baud rate is higher than carrier frequency. In this simulation, no influence is confirmed from (iii)order of M sequence. The result indicates that M sequence can be used as signal of acoustic beacons instead of chirp, which occupies frequency band. © 2016 IEEE.

Effect of tensile axial loading on seismic performance (plastic shear deformation) of a laminated rubber bearing (LRB) was clarified. Cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the relation between lateral force and lateral displacement of the LRB under seismic conditions (i.e., axial loading) and under worn conditions (i.e., 300 cycles). A strain measurement scheme based on image analysis was used to obtain the local strain fields of the LRB. Localized strain fields under tensile axial loading occurred more markedly at the corners of the free surface of the LRB than those under compressive axial loading. The seismic performance of the LRB under tensile or compressive axial loading was degraded severely after shear deformation incurred during 300 cycles. After 300 cycles, for the LRB under compressive axial loading, large localized shear strain fields occurred at the rubber layers underneath and on the inner steel plates, whereas, for the LRB under tensile axial loading, such large strain fields occurred at the rubber layers around the upper and lower steel plates. © 2005 EUCENTRE. The manufacturing industry is undergoing a major transformation based on the emerging industry 4.0 technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, internet of things and cyber-physical systems. These novelty technologies aim at providing central management for the user’s flexible manufacturing requirements and information. Also, the advent of these technologies has transformed the process planning and became crucial for the building of knowledge-based process planning environments. However, current praxis cannot deal with all semantic issues within this new paradigm, as requirements must be clear, consistent, measurable, stand-alone, testable, unambiguous, unique and verifiable. In this context, multicriteria decision analysis models have gained focus of the scientific and industrial communities as a support tool for the decision-making process in the product development and advanced manufacturing as these processes excel in environments with numerous and conflicting alternatives, providing the optimal alternative. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to highlight the current issues and research tendencies regarding ontology-based interoperability systems, multicriteria decision analysis and their integration. To achieve this goal, it will be applied a literature review on the targeted technologies, discussing the current tendencies of the field and the main issues regarding their implementation and integration. Finally, the paper points themes for further research and indicates viable concepts that can compose a solution for the gaps in a systematic manner. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Currently, changes in the customer’s mindset and increased flexibility in manufacturing shifted competition between companies to focus on the product’s value rather than its cost. In this context, Product-Service systems (PSSs) are an alternative to traditional value propositions (i.e. pure products, pure services) by combining services with products and providing an experience to customers. In recent decades, PSSs were expanded from solely business aspects to engineering aspects and technical considerations in their scope, such as the paradigms of Technical PSS, Industrial PSS, Digitalized PSS and Cyber-Physical PSS. More recently, due to the application of Industry 4.0 concepts, there is a significant increase of "smart technologies", i.e. sensors;connectivity;mobile application, in PSSs, naming it a new paradigm on the field, known as Smart PSSs. In this context, this research aims to explore and discuss current issues related to the integration of flexible manufacturing processes and Smart PSSs through a literature review and analysis, regarding information sharing, traceability and system reconfiguration based on customer’s requirements. Found literature points to gaps in the theme related to semantic issues and design issues regarding the dynamic reconfiguration of the manufacturing process and the Smart PSS. The modern approaches to the theme, as found in literature, are still not able to cope with the semantic barriers and high volume of heterogeneous information in a holistic manner. Conclusions point that further investigation of the cited issues is required in a systematic manner, as well as the development of models that can cope with the presented issues. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Hoshin Kanri is a model for strategy management that was conceived in Japan and is usually applied in the context of Total Quality Management (TQM) and lean implementations. This model is recognized for its strength to build the link between business strategy and business execution. The limited universe of empirical research about Hoshin Kanri, in addition to the resurgence of interest in it amongst western managers, who may face cultural challenges in Hoshin Kanri implementation, leads to the necessity of systematizing a set of universally applicable guiding principles for Hoshin Kanri initiatives. An initial model for guidelines was developed in a previous work through a systematic literature review supported by content analysis techniques. However, in order to develop guidelines that are as relevant as possible for the context of companies, the model must be refined through an empirical approach that takes into account practical experiences from different experts. This work fulfills this through a systematic approach by applying expert interviews for the successive refinement of the guidelines model. The results comprise the refined and confirmed model of guidelines regarding the process and the context of Hoshin Kanri and the discussion about conceptual foundations of the model.

Hoshin Kanri and A3: a proposal for integrating variability into the policy deployment process

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to support the Hoshin Kanri (HK) process taking into account the variance of senior managers’ perspective regarding the relationships among objectives, key performance indicators and continuous improvement (CI) projects. Design/methodology/approach: A four-step methodology incorporates the A3 report into the HK, whose deployment was weighted by the variability among managers’ perception about the importance of each decision. This methodology was applied in a market-leader Mexican auto parts manufacturing company that is undergoing a Lean Manufacturing (LM) implementation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed methodology provides an easier approach to consolidate different perspectives and weight the importance of CI projects. Moreover, it minimizes the possibility of managerial conflicts or the influence of a determined senior manager on others’ opinions during the deployment and prioritization. Practical implications: This work may be of great interest to managers, consultants and professionals who deal with the implementation of LM and wish to prioritize the importance of CI projects within the perspective of HK. Originality/value: HK provides a systematic approach to integrate strategic management with daily routine management through an adequate deployment of organizational policies to all levels. However, companies usually struggle with several issues such as the style of senior managers and consensus establishment among different opinions, which emphasizes the relevance of the proposed methodology in this study. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Spare Parts Replacement Policy Based on Chaotic Models

Poisson point processes are widely used to model the consumption of spare parts. However, when the items have very low consumption rates, the historical sample sizes are too small. This paper presents a modelling technique for spare parts policies in the case of items with a low consumption rate. We propose the use of chaotic models derived from the well-known chaotic processes logistic map and Hénon attractor to assess the behaviour of a set of five medium voltage motors supplying four drives in the rolling mill of a steelmaking plant. Supported by the chaotic models, we conclude that the company needs an additional motor to ensure full protection against shortages. © 2018

Constraint-based models (CBMs) are key tools for elucidating the behavior of genome-scale metabolic networks, but the assumption of steady state hinders their application to spatiotemporally varying and multicellular systems. Models that integrate CBMs with kinetics to allow dynamic simulation through dynamic flux balance analysis (DFBA) can circumvent this problem as well as the limitations of purely kinetic models. With many technical barriers for DFBA overcome in recent years, applications traditionally focused on metabolic engineering have expanded to address problems such as evolution of microbial communities, functions of biomedically relevant biofilms, and diet effects on Parkinson's disease. By addressing substantial computational challenges, we expect that such hybrid metabolic models will pave the way towards whole-cell modeling. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Complexity measurement in two supply chains with different competitive priorities

Complexity measurement based on the Shannon information entropy is widely used to evaluate variety and uncertainty in supply chains. However, how to use a complexity measurement to support control actions is still an open issue. This article presents a method to calculate the relative complexity, i.e., the relationship between the current and the maximum possible complexity in a Supply Chain. The method relies on unexpected information requirements to mitigate uncertainty. The article studies two real-world Supply Chains of the footwear industry, one competing by cost and quality, the other by flexibility, dependability, and innovation. The second is twice as complex as the first, showing that competitive priorities influence the complexity of the system and that lower complexity does not ensure competitivity. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Many approaches to work analysis have been proposed so as to enhance the requirements elicitation for systems design. However, systems delivered at dynamic, complex and socio-technical workplaces, have stillfailed at satisfying the needs of users successfully, mainly because they are unable to support activities entirely, especially those related with cognition and collaboration. This paper describes the Observation Conceptual Model, as a complementary approach, to elicit high-quality requirements through systematic field studies about organizations. We also include some ideas for the elaboration of a collaborative system that supports the conceptual model. ©2007 IEEE.
