During the history of science of computational intelligence, many evolutionary algorithms approaches were proposed having more or less success in solving various optimization problems. In this context, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a bio-inspired optimization mechanism based on the metaphor of social behaviour of birds flocking and fish schooling in search for food. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents a quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approach using Gaussian probability distribution function (G-QPSO). Numerical simulations based on optimized proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of an automatic regulator voltage system for nominal system parameters and step reference voltage input demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of G-QPSO approach. Simulation results of G-QPSO to determine the PID parameters are compared with the classical PSO and QPSO.

Global warming due to excessive emission greenhouse gases is a significant issue faced by humanity, and collectively, cars and trucks contribute about 20% to the entire global-warming gases. For a reason, recently, many attempts have been endured to reduce the emission and to increase fuel efficiency, including vehicle platooning, better driving strategy, and increasing engine efficiency. This study intends to provide a more detail assessment regarding the effects of the driving strategy to fuel consumption. For the purpose, the vehicle dynamics are quantified by employing the car-following model based on the optimal velocity model. The fuel consumption is estimated from the regression model of Ahn 18 . The result suggests that the braking distance strongly affects fuel consumption.

To model the periodicity of beats, state-of-the-art beat tracking systems use 'post-processing trackers' (PPTs) that rely on several empirically determined global assumptions for tempo transition, which work well for music with a steady tempo. For expressive classical music, however, these assumptions can be too rigid. With two large datasets of Western classical piano music, namely the Aligned Scores and Performances (ASAP) dataset and a dataset of Chopin's Mazurkas (Maz-5), we report on experiments showing the failure of existing PPTs to cope with local tempo changes, thus calling for new methods. In this paper, we propose a new local periodicity-based PPT, called predominant local pulse-based dynamic programming (PLPDP) tracking, that allows for more flexible tempo transitions. Specifically, the new PPT incorporates a method called 'predominant local pulses' (PLP) in combination with a dynamic programming (DP) component to jointly consider the locally detected periodicity and beat activation strength at each time instant. Accordingly, PLPDP accounts for the local periodicity, rather than relying on a global tempo assumption. Compared to existing PPTs, PLPDP particularly enhances the recall values at the cost of a lower precision, resulting in an overall improvement of F1-score for beat tracking in ASAP (from 0.473 to 0.493) and Maz-5 (from 0.595 to 0.838). © 2014 IEEE.

Decisions are constantly made and some of them may be extremely critical. However, most decision makers are unaware that their decisions may be biased. We used Behavioral Economics as a foundation to propose an ontology that shows how decision makers’ preferences are set and the situation in which they occur in an intuitive decision under risk and uncertainty. Our aim is that this ontology be used to improve their decisions by allowing them a better understanding of how they decide. In addition, this ontology can be used as part of a strategy to reduce biases. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The global agribusiness context faces at the same time challenges of feeding a growing global population that is used to safe and nutritious food, opportunities based on innovation, high technology and efficiency in the agri-food production systems from field to table. Given the context, this article aims to present the main key aspects of the circular economy to agro-industrial cooperatives. These contributions were named key aspects, such as circular and symbiotic practices, competitive advantages, innovation, cooperation and barriers and opportunities. The field presents a problem that few literature in fact discusses circular economy approaches in the context of agro-industrial cooperatives. As a methodological procedure, a literature review was carried out in three databases to obtain relevant documents and thus analyse and discuss some characteristics based on circular economy practices applied in agro-industrial cooperatives. As a result, a diagnosis of the current scenario that agro sector organizations are facing in terms of the main rural activities and sustainable practices that relate to the circular economy;measures taken to generate competitive advantage;innovation behaviour;and how linear and circular business models are being applied in the agroindustry. A framework is presented to show potential routes strategies for closing the cycle in an agro-industrial cooperative. The opportunities are based on the implementation of high technology in the field, the use of bioenergy and the development of new circular business models throughout the agro-value chain. The study has contributions to rural properties and managers of cooperatives in terms of waste reduction, innovation generation and increases in activities and processes based on circular economy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, a Trademark Application Assistant (TAST) that aims to speed up the process of a successful trademark application is proposed. The core of TAST is a similarity-based image retrieval system that makes use of relaxation matching on extracted contour segments. A novelty of this research lies in the processing architecture introduced for adapting the highly effective but computation expensive relaxation matching algorithm to real-time image retrieval. Preliminary results illustrating the quality of matching and the scalability of the processing architecture in terms of response time are included. The proposed architecture is not limited to using relaxation matching based servers, but is also applicable to other types of matching server as well.

Coral reef ecosystems provide essential ecosystem services, but face significant threats from climate change and human activities. Although advances in deep learning have enabled automatic classification of coral reef conditions, conventional deep models struggle to achieve high performance when processing complex underwater ecological images. Vision foundation models, known for their high accuracy and cross-domain generalizability, offer promising solutions. However, fine-tuning these models requires substantial computational resources and results in high carbon emissions. To address these challenges, adapter learning methods such as Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) have emerged as a solution. This study introduces an approach integrating the DINOv2 vision foundation model with the LoRA fine-tuning method. The approach leverages multi-temporal field images collected through underwater surveys at 15 dive sites at Koh Tao, Thailand, with all images labeled according to universal standards used in citizen science-based conservation programs. The experimental results demonstrate that the DINOv2-LoRA model achieved superior accuracy, with a match ratio of 64.77%, compared to 60.34% achieved by the best conventional model. Furthermore, incorporating LoRA reduced the trainable parameters from 1,100M to 5.91M. Transfer learning experiments conducted under different temporal and spatial settings highlight the exceptional generalizability of DINOv2-LoRA across different seasons and sites. This study is the first to explore the efficient adaptation of foundation models for multi-label classification of coral reef conditions under multi-temporal and multi-spatial settings. The proposed method advances the classification of coral reef conditions and provides a tool for monitoring, conserving, and managing coral reef ecosystems. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

One of the applications of data-driven methods in the industry is the creation of real-time, embedded measurements, whether to monitor or replace sensor signals. As the number of embedded systems in products raises over time, the energy efficiency of such systems must be considered in the design. The time (processor) efficiency of the embedded software is directly related to the energy efficiency of the embedded system. Therefore, when considering some embedded software solutions, such as data-driven methods, time efficiency must be taken into account to improve energy efficiency. In this work, the energy efficiency of three data-driven methods: the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Random-Vector Functional Link (RVFL) network were assessed by using the creation of a real-time in-cylinder pressure sensor for diesel engines as a task. The three methods were kept with equivalent performances, whereas their relative execution time was tested and classified by their statistical rankings. Additionally, the space (memory) efficiency of the methods was assessed. The contribution of this work is to provide a guide to choose the best data-driven method to be used in an embedded system in terms of efficiency.

Artificial neural networks and fuzzy systems, have gradually established themselves as popular tools in approximating complicated nonlinear systems and time series forecasting. This paper investigates the hypothesis that the nonlinear mathematical models of multilayer perceptron and radial basis function neural networks and the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy system are able to provide a more accurate out-of-sample forecast than the traditional autoregressive moving average (ARMA) and ARMA generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARMA-GARCH) linear models. Using series of Brazilian exchange rate (R$/US$) returns with 15 min., 60 min., 120 min., daily and weekly basis, the out-pf-sample one-step-ahead forecast performance is compared. Results indicate that forecast performance is strongly related to the series' frequency and the forecasting evaluation shows that nonlinear models perform better than their linear counterparts. In the trade strategy based on forecasts, nonlinear models achieve higher returns when compared to a buy-and-hold strategy and to the linear models.
