Computer vision has been used in many areas such as medical, transportation, military, geography, etc. The fast development of sensor devices inside camera and satellite provides not only red-greed-blue (RGB) images but also multispectral dataset with some channels including RGB, infrared, short-wave, and thermal wave. Most of the dataset is panchromatic (black and white) and RGB, for example Google Map and other satellite-based map applications. This study examines the effects of multispectral dataset for semantic segmentation of land cover. The comparison between RGB with band 2 to band 7 of Landsat 8 Satellite shows an improvement of accuracy from 90.283 to 94.473 for U-Net and from 91.76 to 95.183 for DeepLabV3+. In addition, this research also compares two well-known semantic segmentation methods, namely U-Net and DeepLabV3+, that shown that DeepLabV3+ outperformed U-Net regarding to speed and accuracy. Testing was conducted in the Karawang Regency area, West Java, Indonesia.

General anaesthesia is a clinical procedure that involves the continuous monitoring of several parameters for the correct application of anaesthetics and associated drugs. Focusing on the automatic control in anaesthesia, this work presents a multiobjective optimization design of controllers based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) to solve the problem of drug delivery for induction of anaesthesia. Five Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers in a decentralized scheme were tuned for one specific patient and tested in a total of 24 simulated patients. Acting over the infusions of Propofol, Remifentanil, Atracurium, Dobutamine, and Sodium Nitroprusside the proposed controllers could maintain the controlled variables in a safe range for surgical procedures.

Towards Robust and Scalable Dispatch Modeling of Long-Duration Energy Storage

Energy storage technologies, including short-duration, long-duration, and seasonal storage, are seen as technologies that can facilitate the integration of larger shares of variable renewable energy, such as wind and solar photovoltaics, in power systems. However, despite recent advances in the techno-economic modeling of energy storage (particularly for short-duration applications), the operation and economics of long-duration energy storage are still incomplete in power systems modeling platforms. For instance, existing modeling approaches for long-duration storage are often based either on an oversimplified representation of power system operations or limited representation of storage technologies, e.g., evaluation of only a single application. This manuscript presents an overview of the challenges of modeling long-duration energy storage technologies, as well as a discussion regarding the capabilities and limitations of existing approaches. We used two test power systems with high shares of both solar photovoltaics- and wind (70% - 90% annual variable renewable energy shares) to assess long-duration energy storage dispatch approaches. Our results estimate that better dispatch modeling of long-duration energy storage could increase the associated operational value by 4% - 14% and increase the standard capacity credit by 14% - 34%. Thus, a better long-duration energy storage dispatch could represent significant cost saving opportunities for electric utilities and system operators. In addition, existing long-duration dispatch modeling approaches were tested in terms of both improved system value (e.g., based on production cost and standard capacity credit) and scalability (e.g., based on central processing unit time and peak memory usage). Absorber materials are developed to reduce electromagnetic radiation and ensure the compatibility of the operation of electronic equipment in environments subject to interference. This work presents the development of a low-cost textile electromagnetic absorber for 4G and 5G technologies, operating at frequencies of 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz. The proposed electromagnetic absorber utilizes a 1 mm-thick Denim substrate, with a graphite composite used in the agricultural and commercial polyvinyl acetate glue industry, with the relationship of 25 wt%. The measurements were carried out in a Vector Network Analyzer, model E5071C Agilent Technologies, with the characterization of the Denim substrate, the glue, and the identification of the best parameters for the construction of the absorber. In the project, three low-cost textile absorbers prototypes were fabricated, with G1 = 0.25 mm, G2 = 0.35 mm, and G3 = 0.5 mm of thickness layers of the composite deposited on a Denim fabric. The results indicate that the absorber prototypes G2 presents great results in the frequency range of 4G and 5G band, with a maximum absorption of 26.6 dB in 3.94 GHz, with a structure 98.83% thinner than the commercial absorber LF-75. The variation in absorption performance may be attributed to the different mechanisms by which the absorbers operate: the commercial absorber LF-75 primarily interacts with the magnetic field, whereas the textile prototype predominantly affects the electric field.

Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is crucial in meteorology and agriculture for understanding plant-environment interactions. Its application as an indicator in agricultural practices notably advances Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Climate Action (SDG 13). This research focuses on the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security in the Nile River Basin (NRB), emphasizing the role of VPD, temperature, and precipitation. Utilizing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets from NEX-GDDP-CMIP6, the study analyzes key climatic variables that influence agricultural conditions. The study applies the Mann-Kendall test to evaluate VPD trends from 2000 to 2060 under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. The study's findings on the implications of rising VPD levels in the Nile River Basin (NRB), particularly under the SSP 5-8.5 scenario, highlight a critical challenge for the region's agricultural productivity and food security. The increased VPD, indicative of drier conditions, leads to a moisture deficit for crops, potentially reducing agricultural yields. This scenario poses a significant threat to food security, as lower crop yields can result in food shortages and higher food prices, adversely affecting vulnerable populations. The study underscores the necessity of integrating VPD insights into agricultural and water resource management strategies to uphold food security against climatic variations in support of the SDGs.

Urban greening is critical for sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. However, the effectiveness of urban greening varies depending on the specific goals (e.g., enhancing biodiversity, reducing urban heat, or both) and their spatial implementation. To address the spatial variability in the effectiveness of greening, we propose a spatial decision support model based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). This model aims to optimize urban greening locations to maximize biomass density, mitigate urban heat stress, and improve landscape connectivity. Applied to Suwon City, South Korea, the model's effectiveness was evaluated against a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario across four scenarios: connectivity-based, biomass density-based, heat stress-based, and an integrated-based scenario. The integrated approach, balancing trade-offs between ecological benefits and implementation costs, outperformed the BAU scenario by 8.84 %. Despite highlighting a weaker correlation with heat stress mitigation, this outcome indicates significant improvements in biomass density and landscape connectivity. Our findings underscore the necessity of an integrated planning approach to urban greening, as it can contribute toward attaining urban development goals. Additionally, by proposing an app-based model for policymakers, our outputs should enable the reconciliation of multiple environmental objectives in urban landscapes. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Oil and gas industries within the energy sector are a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a primary driver of climate change and global warming. However, research on their efforts to combat this issue remains limited. This study investigates climate initiatives by five major oil companies, emphasizing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Analyzing 98,730 patents from 2000 to 2022, the results show that they collectively registered 871 CCUS-related patents. ExxonMobil leads with 359, followed by Shell, though 70 % of its patents are inactive. The primary technical fields of these five companies include technologies developed to capture and dispose of CO2, and to utilize a bio-feedstock approach in the oil refining and petrochemical industry. Our findings reveal that all five companies have strategically integrated CCUS into their business operations, forming partnerships with third-party emitters as partners and customers, and implementing efforts to lower the carbon burden of existing assets. These findings are expected to help with strategic decision-making, guiding targeted investments, and paving the way for future research and development endeavors in the rapidly evolving CCUS domain. © 2024 The Authors

Drying has been an eco-friendly and cost-efficient method to reduce post-harvest losses of agricultural crops. In various countries, the technique has been widely utilized in the form of Solar Dryer Dome (SDD) buildings. Accurate indoor microclimate forecasting is very important to implement smart control systems in SDDs that can maintain the ideal conditions, as the availability of solar energy is limited only at daytimes and the temperature may drop significantly during nighttimes in remote areas. In agricultural water research, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has emerged as a pivotal approach for large-scale data collection. Water availability in the context of water quality is very important, both for domestic and industrial purposes. For domestic purposes, drinking water and bathing water are separated. Meanwhile, for the palm oil industry, boiler filler is differentiated from additional process water (dilution water). Water quality parameters can be assessed from turbidity and Total Dissolve Solid (TDS). Measurements using measuring instruments separately and repeatedly require significant energy, time, and costs. This research was conducted with the primary objective of presenting a novel method for categorizing water quality with the approach of IoT sensor technology. The research methodology entailed the utilization of an integrated IoT water sensors system in conjunction with manual water categorization. The methods consist of (1) system design, (2) design and installation of sensor and IoT-based microcontrollers, and (3) accuracy and precision testing compared with laboratory measurements. The precision of the integrated IoT water sensors was assessed through a dedicated sensor precision test, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94.4% for the turbidity sensor and 97.5% for the TDS sensor. Notably, this approach successfully discriminated drinking water with valid categorization, while other water types, including groundwater, water with tea, and water with coffee, yielded null categorization results.

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is an emerging technology for the low-cost production of hydrogen. However, the efficiency and durability of AEMWE devices is currently insufficient to compete with other low-temperature electrolysis technologies. The porous transport layer (PTL) is a critical cell component that remains relatively unoptimized for AEMWE. In this study, we demonstrate that device performance is significantly affected by the morphology and composition of the PTL. For Ni fiber-based PTLs with a ∼2 μm Co3O4oxygen evolution reaction catalyst layer, decreasing the pore size and porosity resulted in a 20% increase in current density at 2 V in 1 M KOH supporting electrolyte. Alloy PTLs with even lower porosity had a higher performance; in particular, the stainless steel PTL gave an 80% increase in current density relative to Ni. Without Co3O4, the alloy PTLs still demonstrated high activity, indicating that the PTL material was catalytically active. However, characterization of the electrode and electrolyte after testing indicated that the alloy PTLs also underwent restructuring and corrosion processes that may limit long-term stability. This study demonstrates that the design of PTLs with improved morphology and composition is an important area of focus to achieve AEMWE performance targets.
