This paper addresses the matter of active and reactive power sharing among distributed inverters in low-voltage microgrids, particularly highlighting the peculiarities of two strategies of coordinated control based on a master/slave architecture, namely Power-and Current-Based Control, in comparison to the classic droop control approach. It is demonstrated that the Power-and Current-Based Control strategies present distinct operational features in relation to classic droop control, mostly concerning how active and reactive power are shared among inverters. Additionally, it is shown how the strategies differ in steady-state operation and response time while comparing to classic droop-based methods. Discussions are presented based on simulation results using Matlab/Simulink, comprising two distributed inverters in a low-voltage microgrid and considering different operational scenarios, such as load changes, existence of linear and nonlinear loads, as well as line impedance variations. Experimental results are presented to validate the expected behavior of one of the strategies. © 2020 IEEE.

In this study, the autoDWM module developed to simulate Drainage Water Management (DWM) for the restructured version of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT+) was tested for a field site in eastern South Dakota. One half of the site was under DWM (eastern half), and the other (western half) was under conventional drainage. Next, multiple runs were used to quantify the impact of intra field, and climate variability on DWM performance, and discuss the applicability of DWM for the study region. SWAT+ produced satisfactory results for a daily time step simulation of tile flow during the model calibration period, 2016 and 2017 (East: NSE = 0.82, PBIAS = -26.8, RSR = 0.42;West: NSE = 0.75, PBIAS = -30.5, RSR = 0.5) and model validation period, 2018 (East: NSE = 0.71, PBIAS = -17, RSR = 0.55;West: NSE = 0.81, PBIAS = -4.6, RSR = 0.44). Results for the 10-year implementation period (2009 - 2018) showed that on average DWM resulted in a 6.5 mm annual tile flow reduction with an average deviation of ± 1.7 mm due to intra field variability. Precipitation had a profound effect on DWM performance during early summer months through the end of each cropping season. Conversely, temperature dominated tile flows during spring when snowmelt resulted in tile flow. Throughout the implementation period, annual tile flow reductions varied from -24 to +36 mm suggesting a combined effect of both precipitation and temperature. Overall, DWM resulted in a cumulative reduction of 63 lbs in N export from the field at an operational cost averaging $0.8 per pound N removed per year per acre. Results from the study successfully explored the variation in DWM performance on a field scale setup and is pivotal in spearheading the adoptability campaign by stakeholders and policymakers in the region. © 2022, The Authors. Numerous studies have investigated the differences and similarities between protein structures determined by solution NMR spectroscopy and those determined by x-ray crystallography. A fundamental question is whether any observed differences are due to differing methodologies, or to differences in the behavior of proteins in solution versus in the crystalline state. Here, we compare the properties of the hydrophobic cores of high-resolution protein crystal structures and those in NMR structures, determined using increasing numbers and types of restraints. Prior studies have reported that many NMR structures have denser cores compared to those of high-resolution x-ray crystal structures. Our current work investigates this result in more detail, and finds that these NMR structures tend to violate basic features of protein stereochemistry, such as small non-bonded atomic overlaps and few Ramachandran and side chain dihedral angle outliers. We find that NMR structures solved with more restraints, and which do not significantly violate stereochemistry, have hydrophobic cores that have a similar size and packing fraction as their counterparts determined by x-ray crystallography at high-resolution. These results lead us to conclude that, at least regarding the core packing properties, high-quality structures determined by NMR and x-ray crystallography are the same, and the differences reported earlier are most likely a consequence of methodology, rather than fundamental differences between the protein in the two different environments. Significance: Dense packing of hydrophobic residues is key to protein structure and stability. Previously, it has been noted that structures solved by NMR spectroscopy have denser cores than x-ray crystal structures. Carbyne, a one-dimensional (1D) carbon allotrope with alternating triple and single bonds, has the highest known mechanical strength but is unstable to bending, limiting synthesis to short linear chains. Encapsulation within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) stabilizes carbyne, forming confined carbyne (CC), thus enabling further research concerning attractive 1D physics and materials properties of carbyne. While CC has been synthesized in multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) using the arc-discharge method and in double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) via high-temperature high-vacuum (HTHV) method, synthesis in single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) has been challenging due to their fragility under such conditions. In this work, we report a low-temperature method to synthesize CC inside SWCNTs (CC@SWCNT). By annealing SWCNTs containing ammonium deoxycholate (ADC) at 400°C, ADC is converted into CC without damaging the SWCNTs. Raman spectroscopy revealed a strong CC phonon (CC-mode) peak at 1860–1870 cm-1, much stronger than the SWCNT G-band peak, confirming a high fraction of CC in the resulting material. The Raman mapping result showed the uniformity of the CC-mode signal across the entire film sample, proving the high efficiency of this method in synthesizing CC in every SWCNT of appropriate size. Notably, the CC-mode peaks of CC@SWCNT (above 1860 cm-1) are higher than those reported in previous CC@CNT samples (mostly -1). This is attributed to larger SWCNT diameters (>0.95 nm) used in this study, compared to the typical 0.6–0.8 nm range. Larger diameters result in reduced confinement, allowing carbyne to closely resemble free-standing carbyne while remaining stabilized. This low-temperature synthesis of long-chain, nearly freestanding carbyne within large-diameter SWCNTs offers new opportunities for exploring 1D physics and the unique properties of carbyne for potential applications. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Experimental Analyses of the Combustion Instability Parameters in an Ammonia/Methane Fuelled Low Eddy Premix Burner for Gas Turbine Power Generation

The main factor that directs scientists to work on alternative energy sources is the environmental damage caused by the waste gases generated by the use of fossil fuels. Since ammonia is a carbonless substance and contains hydrogen atoms per unit volume, it can be used as an alternative fuel. In this study, experimental analyzes were carried out to examine the combustion instability properties of methane-ammonia mixed fuels for a low eddy and premix burner. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of ammonia addition on combustion instability with different compelling acoustic frequencies, dynamic pressure amplitude and light emission intensity. In addition, the effects of ammonia addition to methane fuel gas on temperature and emissions were also investigated. Pure methane and three different methane-ammonia mixtures (by volume 100% CH4, 90% CH 4 - 10 NH3, 80% CH4 - 20% NH3 and 70% CH4-30 NH3) as fuel at 0.7 equivalents and with three different acoustics have been used for analyzes. The burner power was determined as 5 kW and the excitation frequencies of the combustion chamber were determined as 95, 160 and 300 Hz. In this study, as the ammonia addition increased, there was an increase in the flame instability values up to 30% NH3, especially at the 95 Hz frequency, where the highest distortion effect occurred. It was observed that there was no significant change in the combustion performance with the addition of ammonia to methane fuel. The predicted NOX emission levels were found to increase significantly due to nitrogen bound to ammonia. However, it is seen that the NOx emission levels in the exhaust measurements are not very high (Maximum 560 ppm). Therefore, it can be concluded that ammonia supplemented methane fuels have significant potential as an alternative fuel. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Real-time acquisition of human pulse signals in daily life is clinically important for cardiovascular disease monitoring and ***,we propose a smart photonic wristband for pulse signal monitoring based on speckle pattern analysis with a polymer optical fiber(POF)integrated into a sports *** different speckle pattern processing algorithms and POFs with different core diameters were *** results indicated that the smart photonic wristband had a high signal-to-noise ratio and low latency,with the measurement error controlled at approximately 3.7%.This optimized pulse signal could be used for further medical diagnosis and was capable of objectively monitoring subtle pulse signal changes,such as the pulse waveform at different positions of Cunkou and pulse waveforms before and after *** the assistance of artificial intelligence(AI),functions such as gesture recognition have been realized through the established prediction model by processing pulse signals,in which the recognition accuracy reaches 95%.Our AI-assisted smart photonic wristband has potential applications for clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases and home monitoring,paving the way for medical Internet of Things-enabled smart systems.

FaNDOM: Fast Nested Distance-Based Seeding of Optical Maps

Optical mapping provides single-molecule readouts of the locations of fluorescently labeled sequence motifs on long fragments of DNA, resolved to nucleotide-level coordinates. With the advent of microfluidic technologies for manipulating large numbers of individual molecules, and advances in the imaging of fluorescent DNA tags, it is possible to inexpensively generate high coverage and long OM molecules (>150Kbp). In addition to its use in scaffolding for de novo assembly, optical map data can also be mapped to a reference for identifying genetic structural variants implicated in Mendelian diseases and cancer. To address the computational challenge, we introduce FaNDOM (Fast Nested Distance seeding of Optical Maps) - an optical map alignment tool which greatly reduces the search space of the alignment process. On 4 benchmark human data-sets, FaNDOM was significantly (4-14X) faster than competing tools while maintaining comparable sensitivity and specificity. We used FaNDOM to map variants in 3 cancer cell-lines and identified many structural variations, including deletion of tumor-suppressor genes, duplications, gene fusions and gene-disrupting rearrangements. Depressive Disorders (DD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in the world that may lead to suicide cases. To prevent the latter, ubiquitous early detection systems may be effective. Recent studies have since researched the development of such systems by exploiting several forms of data, including video, audio, Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA), and passive sensing data using sensors embedded in mobile devices. To summarize the trends, opportunities, and existing challenges in this field, this study reviewed 15 papers to answer four research questions. EMA was the most popular data to be used in this task, but other approaches, such as using video, audio, and typing behaviors, may be considered due to the subjectivity of EMA. These data were typically recorded using smartphones and analyzed using Machine Learning (ML). However, most of the developed systems had yet to be implemented. Overall, it was concluded that further studies may need to explore usages of more objective data in multimodal approaches as well as consider using Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) to deploy these systems to provide more effective and efficient diagnoses. Future studies must also take into account the existing challenges of the data and infrastructures, such as the weaknesses of several data types, limitations of mobile devices, as well as the challenges of diagnosis approaches.

Numerical study of piezoelectric energy harvester utilizing motorcycle vibrations

A numerical study of the piezoelectric energy harvester is performed to see its visibility for application in harvesting motorcycle vibration. The target vibration of 40-70 Hz is the requirement as it is the frequent vibration during motorcycle operations. A composite cantilever structure of SU-8/Al/PVDF/Al is set as the main body of the structure with a thickness of 200/0.3/5/0.3 µm. The length is set as the study point to see the suitable structure for the application. The study found that by designing the correct length, the cantilever’s resonance frequency can match the target vibration frequency; on the other hand longer cantilever results in higher deflection and energy generation of the piezoelectric structure. The study concludes that the length of 33 mm is suitable for covering the 40-70 Hz target vibration with a resonance frequency of 54.3 Hz. The voltage generated is 24.8 mV. This finding is one important step to developing an energy harvester device that can be used in wide applications.
