Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of cancer radiotherapy that uses high-energy proton beams to deliver precise and targeted radiation to tumors. This helps to mit-igate unnecessary radiation exposure in healthy tissues. Real-time imaging of prompt gamma rays with Compton cameras has been suggested to improve therapy efficacy. However, the camera's non-zero time resolution leads to incorrect interaction classifications and noisy images that are insufficient for accurately assessing proton delivery in patients. To address the challenges posed by the Compton camera's image quality, machine learning techniques are employed to classify and refine the generated data. These machine-learning techniques include recurrent and feedforward neural networks. A PyTorch model was designed to improve the data captured by the Compton camera. This decision was driven by PyTorch's flexibility, powerful capabilities in handling sequential data, and enhanced G PU usage. This accelerates the model's computations on large-scale radiotherapy data. Through hyperparameter tuning, the validation accuracy of our PyTorch model has been improved from an initial 7 % to over 60 %. Moreover, the PyTorch Distributed Data Parallelism strategy was used to train the RNN models on multiple G PU s, which significantly reduced the training time with a minor impact on model accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

In Industry 4.0, trends on Servitisation are intertwined with increased use of “smart technologies”, bringing light to Smart Product-Service systems. Currently, Smart-PSSs need to cope with dynamic customer’s needs, which generates system requirements in a higher frequency, resulting in reconfiguration of such system. This research aims to study current issues regarding the reconfiguration of Smart-PSSs, focusing on flexibilization. An exploration of issues is done by a qualitative literature review, with results structured in a schema. This schema approaches issues which are not yet solved or addressed in literature, showing that systemic solutions are necessary to solve explored issues. A discussion of current limitations and trends in research is presented, bridging studied material and pointing out current Industry 4.0 technologies that might cope with the issues if approached systemically. The paper points to further research regarding a expansions on the literature review and next steps on solving current issues.

Decision-makers often encounter the challenge of efficient long-term ecological planning to consider economic and environmental trade-offs. However, tools to support stepwise mitigation strategies that account for dynamic ecological responses to continuing urban development are limited. Therefore, we developed a sequential action-based dynamic decision-making model to simulate stepwise mitigation measures in space over time using a multi-objective optimization algorithm. We focused on exploring the ecological corridors and habitat creation as mitigation measures through four decades to identify trade-offs and optimal plans that minimize landscape connectivity and edge density as ecological responses to urban development and minimize implementation costs per action. The results showed that adopting an initial low-investment strategy with sequential planning significantly enhanced potential ecological benefits beyond the 2000s compared with one-action planning. In contrast, the initial high-cost investment exhibited a gradual decline in the ecological benefits over time from 1995. The initial low-cost investment presented an opportunity to enhance ecological benefits by implementing early mitigation measures in locations capable of sustaining long-term ecological functions. The results suggest that sequential planning offers valuable insights into effective urban ecological planning by analyzing time-series data. This study enables step-by-step scenario testing, thereby supporting the facilitation of urban and regional sustainability planning. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the control design of a current mode control for a three-phase voltage source converter. A variant of the Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) scheme is proposed for comparison with the classical inner control approach. The ADRC method has a straightforward design procedure and has well-known abilities for disturbance rejection and robustness to parametric uncertainties of the system. Theoretical studies are presented and simulation results are discussed by using EMTP-RV environment considering the system Synchronous Reference Frame Control, whose modeling was extracted from the analysis performed in a classical refer-ence. © 2021 IEEE.

Star formation rate (SFR) is a fundamental parameter for describing galaxies and inferring their evolutionary course. H II regions yield the best measure of instantaneous SFR in galaxies, although the derived SFR can have large uncertainties depending on tracers and assumptions. We present an SFR calibration for the entire molecular gas disk of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, based on our new high-sensitivity ALMA 100 GHz continuum data at 55 pc (= 0′′ . 8) resolution in combination with the HST Paα line data. In this calibration, we account for the spatial variations of dust extinction, electron temperature of H II regions, AGN contamination, and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) based on publicly available multi-wavelength data. Especially, given the extended nature and the possible non-negligible contribution to the total SFR, a careful consideration of DIG is essential. With a cross-calibration between two corrected ionized gas tracers (free-free continuum and Paα), the total SFR of the NGC 1068 disk is estimated to be 3.2 ± 0.5 M☉ yr−1, one-third of the SFR without accounting for DIG (9.1 ± 1.4 M☉ yr−1). We confirmed high SFR around the southern bar-end and the corotation radius, which is consistent with the previous SFR measurements. In addition, our total SFR exceeds the total SFR based on 8 µm dust emission by a factor of 1.5. We attribute this discrepancy to the differences in the young stars at different stages of evolution traced by each tracer and their respective timescales. This study provides an example to address the various uncertainties in conventional SFR measurements and their potential to lead to significant SFR miscalculations. © 2024, CC0.

In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the traveling direction for pedestrian by applying IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) to sensor information from a smartwatch. Because a result of PCA do not have orientation information, an estimate of the traveling direction includes an indeterminacy problem. We show that the proposed method can solve this problem and provide high accuracy in the traveling direction estimation by walking experiments.

Phased arrays are crucial in various technologies, such as radar and wireless communications, due to their ability to precisely control and steer electromagnetic waves. This precise control improves signal processing and enhances imaging performance. However, extending phased arrays to the terahertz (THz) frequency range has proven challenging, especially for high-frequency operation, broadband performance, two-dimensional (2D) phase control with large antenna arrays, and strong phase modulation. Here, we introduce a photonic platform to realize a THz phased array that bypasses the above challenges. Our method employs 2D phase coding with 2-bit across a broad THz frequency range from 0.8 to 1.4 THz. The core of our design is a pixelated nonlinear Pancharatnam-Berry metasurface driven by a spatially modulated femtosecond laser, allowing precise phase control of THz signals. We showcase the effectiveness of our method through four proof-of-concept applications: single beamforming, dual beamforming, imaging and vortex beam generation. The realized photonic platform provides a promising pathway for developing broadband phased arrays in the THz regime. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a new 3D space modeling method for a SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) by using distance measurement information on the horizontal plane by a SOKUIKI sensor and a 360-degree panoramic image by an omnidirectional camera. The proposed method can suppress the measurement time and the amount of the measurement data in comparison with the conventional SLAM. We evaluate the proposed method by some measurement experiments. We show that it is possible to measure the size of simultaneous objects with a high degree of accuracy. © 2019 IEEE.

Predictions of physical phenomena in buildings are carried out by using physical models formulated as a mathematical problem and solved by means of numerical methods, aiming at evaluating, for instance, the building thermal or hygrothermal performance by calculating distributions and fluxes of heat and moisture transfer. Therefore, the choice of the numerical method is crucial since it is a compromise among (i) the solution accuracy, (ii) the computational cost to obtain the solution and (iii) the complexity of the method implementation. An efficient numerical method enables to compute an accurate solution with a minimum computational run time (CPU). On that account, this article brings an investigation on the performance of three numerical methods. The first one is the standard and widely used finite-difference approach, while the second one is the so-called RC approach, which is a particular method brought to the building physics area by means of an analogy of electric circuits. The third numerical method is the spectral one, which has been recently proposed to solve nonlinear diffusive problems in building physics. The three methods are evaluated in terms of accuracy on the assessment of the dependent variable (temperature or vapor pressure) or of density of fluxes for three different cases: (i) heat diffusion through a concrete slab, (ii) moisture diffusion through an aerated concrete slab and (iii) heat diffusion using measured temperatures as boundary conditions. Results highlight the spectral approach as the most accurate method. The RC based model with a few number of resistances does not provide accurate results for temperature and vapor pressure distributions neither to flux densities nor conduction loads.

This study examines the effect of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads in subsurface (tile) drainage across storm events using edge-of-field monitoring data from two sites (A and B) located in the northwest region of Ohio, USA. A k-median cluster analysis was used to classify 462 storm events at Site A and 684 storm events at Site B based on precipitation amount and wet antecedent moisture conditions (AMC). Patterns of nutrient loss in tile drainage were compared between fields with alfalfa and fields with cash and cover crops using a difference-in-differences analysis across three identified storm event types: Dry storm events (Site A: AMC25 mm, Site B: AMC>29 mm), and large storm events (Site A: precipitation amount>29 mm, Site B: precipitation amount>38 mm). Compared to the cash and cover crop rotations, alfalfa had the following effects on discharge and water quality: a reduction in subsurface discharge during large storm events at site B;reduced subsurface nitrate (NO3-N) and total N (TN) loads across all storm event types at Site A;reduced subsurface dissolved reactive P (DRP) and total P (TP) loads during large events at both sites. The impact of alfalfa during large storm events is particularly important given that most nutrient export occurs during these events. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
