In this paper, we address a decision-making problem related to the requirement of costly equipment by medical diagnostic services in a segmented public healthcare system comprising several institutions and private providers. The problem is motivated by a real-world case of the Mexican healthcare system. The aim of this study is to determine which hospitals can provide the service, their capacity levels, the allocation of demand in each institution, and the referral of patients to other institutions or private providers while minimizing annual investment costs and operating costs required to satisfy demand. A mixed-integer linear programming model that takes into account different characteristics such as patient acuity levels, types of equipment, and demand variation through time is introduced. The model was empirically assessed to evaluate its impact on the decision-making process. A sensitivity analysis to evaluate solution behavior for variations of critical parameters was performed. The results showed that some values could generate a significant effect on the total costs for the service coverage and in the efficiency of the service, whereas overall results indicated the usefulness of the model. While this model is valuable to aid this decision-making problem, it is limited to medium-size instances of up to 90 facilities. To solve the problems with larger instances, a two-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed. In the first phase, the method uses a greedy construction mechanism, and in the second phase, it attempts to improve the solution. Empirical evidence on large instances shows that good solutions with low computing times are reached in comparison with the exact method. © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company.

A high level of physical detail in a molecular model improves its ability to perform high accuracy simulations, but can also significantly affect its complexity and computational cost. In some situations, it is worthwhile to add additional complexity to a model to capture properties of interest;in others, additional complexity is unnecessary and can make simulations computationally infeasible. In this work we demonstrate the use of Bayes factors for molecular model selection, using Monte Carlo sampling techniques to evaluate the evidence for different levels of complexity in the two-centered Lennard-Jones + quadrupole (2CLJQ) fluid model. Examining three levels of nested model complexity, we demonstrate that the use of variable quadrupole and bond length parameters in this model framework is justified only sometimes. We also explore the effect of the Bayesian prior distribution on the Bayes factors, as well as ways to propose meaningful prior distributions. This Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) process is enabled by the use of analytical surrogate models that accurately approximate the physical properties of interest. Industry 4.0 has recently become an ubiquitous topic of study both by academics and practitioners. Beyond the technology application domain, one major issue that most organizations have to face when structuring their efforts towards Industry 4.0 is the identification of viable opportunities for the deployment of Industry 4.0-related technologies. Proof of concept projects are usually developed to address this, as they are an exploratory means to quickly assess the application of a given technology to a specific context. If results are positive, these projects may grow into larger projects that will be used to deploy the considered technologies in a wider scale. This work aims to propose a framework that helps facilitate the assessment of proof of concept projects and their transition into wider scale projects. This framework is based both in the existing literature on Industry 4.0 technologies and in case studies of proof of concept projects that were used to assess such technologies. The framework is composed of three main components: the technologies being evaluated, the design objectives that they meet and the outcomes that are expected. The human brain is composed of distinct regions that are each associated with particular functions and distinct propensities for the control of neural dynamics. However, the relation between these functions and control profiles is poorly understood, as is the variation in this relation across diverse scales of space and time. Here we probe the relation between control and dynamics in brain networks constructed from diffusion tensor imaging data in a large community sample of young adults. Specifically, we probe the control properties of each brain region and investigate their relationship with dynamics across various spatial scales using the Laplacian eigenspectrum. In addition, through analysis of regional modal controllability and partitioning of modes, we determine whether the associated dynamics are fast or slow, as well as whether they are alternating or monotone. We find that brain regions that facilitate the control of energetically easy transitions are associated with activity on short length scales and slow timescales. Conversely, brain regions that facilitate control of difficult transitions are associated with activity on long length scales and fast timescales. Built on linear dynamical models, our results offer parsimonious explanations for the activity propagation and network control profiles supported by regions of differing neuroanatomical structure.

Background: In an op-ed posted on the New York Times (NYT) website, Angelina Jolie disclosed that she carries the BRCA1 genetic mutation and received a preventive mastectomy. Studies have since demonstrated a positive impact of Ms. Jolie's disclosure on breast cancer-related health behaviors. This qualitative study used conventional content analysis of comments to the op-ed to explore intermediate outcomes of the disclosure;specifically, how the disclosure influenced public discourse regarding appearance changes related to breast cancer surgery. Method: After downloading all comments from the NYT website and using an iterative process to develop a standardized codebook, two researchers applied the codes using NVivo 10. Result: Five subthemes were identified in sixty-one comments discussing physical appearance or body image in the context of breast cancer treatment or preventive care: appearance versus health, perception of breast appearance following surgery, partner acceptance of appearance following surgery, beliefs about others’ reactions regarding appearance, and beliefs about reconstructive surgery. While some commenters shared body image concerns following surgery, many were relieved to have undergone the procedure, valuing health over appearance. Most women stated that their romantic partners praised their appearance following surgery, although some worried about how they were perceived in public. Conclusion: This study clarifies how celebrity disclosures about cancer may influence intermediate outcomes (e.g. interpersonal communication and beliefs about appearance-related surgical outcomes) hypothesized to contribute to changes in cancer prevention and treatment behaviors. More research is needed to further elucidate the relationships between celebrity disclosure, intermediate outcomes, and behavioral outcomes. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Currently, the discussion about smart city becomes a trend topic in which the development of the Internet of Thing (IoT) is used in various sectors including in the manufacturing sector where the Indonesian government is intensively increasing the capacity and production quality. The use of IoT in both smart manufacture and smart city become an interesting thing topic for research and the combination of the new technology Blockchain, may proof the reliability of data. Trust, transparent, secure, real time online process as a new phenomenon to merge IoT with Blockchain technology into smart manufacturing technology. However, for maintaining quality and sustainability, required technology governance so the achievement of implementation can be done well. This research uses the method called Systematic Literature Review (SLR) find the Blockchain adoption factors for Smart Manufacturing Technology Governance and the research conducted on several reputable publications. The result found, there are 35 adoption success factors found from the adoption of blockchain technology into smart manufacture industry. The influence of the technology governance process in smart manufacture industry increase sustainability, realtime and accurate decision making for the industry. © 2018 IEEE.

Organizational models of production systems that focus on services and servitization are experiencing an increase in an application. These models emphasize the value proposition for the customer and a better understanding of the value creation process. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as those associated with Industry 4.0 also requires well-structured and results-oriented processes. In this perspective, although there are several tools for measuring both operations and organizational performance, the literature still lacks tools that integrate and align these two perspectives, accounting for activities at the operational level that reflect objectives at the strategic level, and vice-versa. Therefore, a procedure for aligning process performance (operations' performance) and strategic performance (organizational performance) in a service context is proposed. This procedure is based on three main components identified through a literature review: (1) guidelines associated with enterprise engineering that focus on processes, developed by Deschamps (2013);(2) a set of critical success factors for implementation of performance measurement systems that focus on organizational performance, developed by Keathley (2016);and (3) ten determinants of service quality, proposed by Parasuraman (1985). The alignment procedure is presented as being mediated by Parasuraman's model, relating enterprise engineering guidelines and critical success factors. © 2018 Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). By associating active learning methodologies and digital media as a form to improve educational quality, the diversity of experimentations in engineering education has been motivating researches in many areas with possibilities of increasing both students' knowledge and skills. Control engineering is an area where educational laboratories are usually costly, thus the use of virtual laboratories for remote experimentation became an interesting approach. In this work, it is presented a remote experimentation procedure for the ball and beam system, which is a nonlinear and unstable open loop process. Considering the advanced control topic, multiobjective optimization was introduced in the experiment in order to tune Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. Through the description of the system model, the multiobjective optimization technique, and the experiment configuration, students can simulate and test their controllers remotely in a real plant.

Operation and maintenance are important administrative and operational functions of the production, as they can guarantee the required demand. Together, they have the responsibilities of doing right (quality advantage), fast (speed advantage), timely (reliability advantage), quick setup (flexibility advantage) and affordability. In addition, they are close to several important activities such as: safety, environment, productivity, marketing, quality, reliability and accounting systems. With this new vision, changes and opportunities are being presented to these sectors of operation and maintenance. In the new paradigm, the maintenance and operation teams are motivated to strategically guarantee the full operation of the production system and not only to preserve the equipment. And, thus, to develop an efficient strategy, providing the sustainability and the increase of the assets of the company, reaching the goals of the planning and control of the production established by the company. The main objective of this work is to analyze a proposal to meet the required production demand through the alignment of production control planning strategies and maintenance planning and control. The analysis of the research points to some significant contributions, for example, to the areas of strategy and logistics of organizations that work mainly in environments with a high level of competitiveness. Through a case study, the analysis pointed to the positive impact of alignment on parameters such as: sustainability of the competitive strategy, productivity, costs, reliability and availability of physical assets, and flexibilization of the productive organizational system.
