An effect of tsunami to hotel occupancy: A case of Phuket, Thailand

As a popular city for global tourists, more than one third of the Phuket GPP depends on the hotel and restaurant sector. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused a serious physical damage to hotels and a high cancellation of bookings in the post disaster period, which, in turn, led to most THB 3 billion drop of the hotel and restaurant sector income in 2005 in Phuket. In addition, many tourism facilities in Phuket suffered bankruptcy or a slump, because they started their business again immediately after the reconstruction phase, while tourists did not really come back. This paper is an initiative study of our research project to evaluate the effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on Hotel Occupancy, with a focus on the speed for the physical reconstruction and tourism market recovery. We collected the physical reconstruction period and the hotel occupancy recovery data of six hotels that located in the Patong Beach of Phuket from 2003 to 2017. Through calculation, the average of damage rate (i.e., unavailability of the rooms in this study) is 55.89%, with an average speed for the physical reconstruction to rebuild the rooms about 6.07% of the overall rooms per month. The quotient of these two values indicates that the reconstruction period is around 9.2 months. However, the average period for reconstruction and tourism recovery is about 20 months. There is an about 11 months' delay between that hotel and resorts have finished the reconstruction and the tourists start to visit Phuket as usual. Therefore, the local government, local tourist authority, and hotel entrepreneurs can consider these findings in order to prepare the recovery plan for tourism industry in the future tsunami.

This work describes the design, fabrication, and initial testing of a Soft Orthotic Physiotherapy Hand Interactive Aid (SOPHIA) for stroke rehabilitation. SOPHIA consists of (1) a soft robotic exoskeleton, (2) a microcontroller-based control system driven by a brain–machine interface (BMI), and (3) a sensorized glove for passive rehabilitation. In contrast to other rehabilitation devices, SOPHIA is the first modular prototype of a rehabilitation system that is capable of three tasks: aiding extension based assistive rehabilitation, monitoring patient exercises, and guiding passive rehabilitation. Our results show that this prototype of the device is capable of helping healthy subjects to open their hand. Finger extension is triggered by a command from the BMI, while using a variety of sensors to ensure a safe motion. All data gathered from the device will be used to guide further improvements to the prototype, aiming at developing specifications for the next generation device, which could be used in future clinical trials. © Copyright © 2017 McConnell, Vallejo, Moioli, Brasil, Secciani, Nemitz, Riquart, Corne, Vargas and Stokes.

Resolution of one-dimensional bin packing problems using augmented neural networks and minimum bin slack

The objective of this work is to compare the augmented neural network (AugNN) metaheuristic to minimum bin slack (MBS) heuristic to solve combinatorial optimisation problems, specifically, in this case, the one-dimensional bin packing problem (1D-BPP), a class of cutting and packing problems (CPP). CPP are easily found among various industry sectors and its proper treatment can improve the use of stocks in cutting problems or optimise physical space in packing problems. In order to optimise AugNN parameters, a design of experiment (DOE) was applied in order to guide a statistical analysis of different configurations of AugNN. The tests, developed in many benchmark problems found in the literature, showed that MBS heuristic was, in general superior, both in terms of the solution quality, which is about 70% better, and computational time, which is about 90% less. Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Reuse has been proposed as a microarchitecture-level mechanism to reduce the amount of executed instructions, collapsing dependencies and freeing resources for other instructions. Previous works have used reuse domains such as memory accesses, integer or not floating point, based on the reusability rate. However, these works have not studied the specific contribution of reusing different subsets of instructions for performance. In this work, we analysed the sensitivity of trace reuse to instruction subsets, comparing their efficiency to their complementary subsets. We also studied the amount of reuse that can be extracted from loops. Our experiments show that disabling trace reuse outside loops does not harm performance but reduces in 12% the number of accesses to the reuse table. Our experiments with reuse subsets show that most of the speedup can be retained even when not reusing all types of instructions previously found in the reuse domain. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper proposes a multiobjective optimization technique that maximizes the active power generation from single-phase distributed generators, and minimizes the unbalance factor at the point of common coupling of the network. Such technique is incorporated into a centralized control strategy for optimal power flow control purpose. The centralized control strategy used herein is the Power-Based Control that coordinates the distributed units to contribute to the network's active and reactive power needs, per phase, in proportion of their power capacity. The simulation results of a simplified network with three single-phase distributed generators validate the proposal in terms of power flow control, voltage regulation and power quality.

A transponder-based positioning method using audible sounds for a large-scale area positioning has been proposed by the authors. The proposed method has two characteristics; it employs audible sounds instead of ultrasounds to measure long distance by using audible sounds, and it achieves positioning without clock synchronization among devices which is required additional equipment such as radio wave. However, positioning of the moving object (terminal) is still challenging because the proposed method requires longer measurement time than other methods since it measures the round-trip time of flight (TOF) among the terminal and the anchors (transponders). In this paper, we evaluated the effect of the terminal movement on positioning in simulations and experiments. From simulations and experimental results, it was found that the effect of Doppler and the terminal movement cause random error and offset in TOF/distance, respectively. Consequently, it was found that our proposed method is sensitive to the terminal movement.

This paper deals with the optimization of grounding grids geometry. The goal is to reduce the amount of material to deploy a grounding grid, while keeping the system security. The touch voltages, step voltages, GPR and ground resistance are parameters of grounding grids and are related to safety aspect. Also discussed is a genetic algorithm used for optimizing ground grids, which can assume any form in a limited space of the project. The simulation is based in images method. The results are presented and discussed. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper deals with the computation of ground resistance, surface voltage, touch voltage and step voltage, to mesh with horizontal wires arranged in different angles. The computer program implemented used in the mathematical modeling is based on the method proposed by Heppe, which allows obtaining the grounding parameters for homogeneous soil and soil stratified in two layers. The results obtained with the proposed method will be compared with other methods in literature. Also will be presented the results of a grounding grid using wires at various angles. © 2016 IEEE.
