Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.

In order to assist driver's vision, a real-time recognition system for traffic signs is proposed. After detecting sign candidates, biologically inspired opponent-color filters are used to extract symbol parts of signs. After normalizing the size of symbol, structural features are calculated to identify the sign. 5572 segmented images are used to design the algorithm. In a real-time system, the same sign in a sequence of frames is tracked, and a majority vote is used to integrate the recognition results. For test data, 93.8% recall rate and 99.3% precision rate could be attained. In-vehicle experiment also showed high recall and precision rates.

Infinite games with incomplete information are common in practice. First-price, sealed-bid auctions are a prototypical example. To solve this kind of infinite game, a heuristic approach is to discretise the strategy spaces and enumerate to approximate the equilibrium strategies. However, an approximate algorithm might not be guaranteed to converge. This paper discusses the utilisation of a best response algorithm in solving infinite games with incomplete information. We show the constraints of the valuation distributions define the necessary conditions of the convergence of the best response algorithm for several classes of infinite games, including auctions. A salient feature of the necessary convergence conditions lies in that they can be employed to compute the exact Nash equilibria without discretising the strategy space if the best response algorithm converges. This paper employs a simulation model of a Supply Chain Management (SCM) system. The main objective of this model is to compare two systems, one using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), versus the existing system of barcodes. A quantitative analysis based on a simulation model is developed and a comparison between the two systems is discussed. The model runs for both systems using ARENA simulation software. The model is tested using real data. Two scenarios have been developed using the simulation model in order to analyze: 1 Total inventory cost of all chains in the SCM both with and without RFID. 2 Customer satisfaction and customers lost for all chains in the SCM with and without RFID. The cost of RFID installation is going down over time. By combining the lower cost of RFID installation with fast scanning, the use of RFID technology in SCM promises to reduce annual total inventory cost and the number of lost customers. As a result, this research has shown that RFID technology could be used to improve the effectiveness and performance of the entire supply chain system.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

The Department of Technology systems (TSYS) at East Carolina University has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. Historically, electrical engineering students have been very proficient in the application of mathematics. At California State University we have experienced, recently, a negative shift of mathematical interest and therefore a lack of progress in the understanding of basic concepts that require a strong mathematical background. This problem stems from the lack of mathematical skills and studying habits. One way to solve this problem is to engage our students into the application of mathematics with simple, yet, powerful problems. An assessment of such engagement occurs every week with a quiz that spans the material covered during the previous week and tests some of the mathematical and engineering skills. This paper attempts to show the results of such assessment and the outcome of a class in which such approach was tasted. We present a new method for learning to parse a bilingual sentence using Inversion Transduction Grammar trained on a parallel corpus and a monolingual treebank. The method produces a parse tree for a bilingual sentence, showing the shared syntactic structures of individual sentence and the differences of word order within a syntactic structure. The method involves estimating lexical translation probability based on a word-aligning strategy and inferring probabilities for CFG rules. At runtime, a bottom-up CYK-styled parser is employed to construct the most probable bilingual parse tree for any given sentence pair. We also describe an implementation of the proposed method. The experimental results indicate the proposed model produces word alignments better than those produced by Giza++, a state-of-the-art word alignment system, in terms of alignment error rate and F-measure. The bilingual parse trees produced for the parallel corpus can be exploited to extract bilingual phrases and train a decoder for statistical machine translation.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. In this paper we address the issue of detecting defects in wood using features extracted from grayscale images. The feature set proposed here is based on the concept of texture and it is computed from the co-occurrence matrices. The features provide measures of properties such as smoothness, coarseness, and regularity. Comparative experiments using a color image based feature set extracted from percentile histograms are carried to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed feature set. Two different learning paradigms, neural networks and support vector machines, and a feature selection algorithm based on multi-objective genetic algorithms were considered in our experiments. The experimental results show that after feature selection, the grayscale image based feature set achieves very competitive performance for the problem of wood defect detection relative to the color image based features
