We present a new method for learning to parse a bilingual sentence using Inversion Transduction Grammar trained on a parallel corpus and a monolingual treebank. The method produces a parse tree for a bilingual sentence, showing the shared syntactic structures of individual sentence and the differences of word order within a syntactic structure. The method involves estimating lexical translation probability based on a word-aligning strategy and inferring probabilities for CFG rules. At runtime, a bottom-up CYK-styled parser is employed to construct the most probable bilingual parse tree for any given sentence pair. We also describe an implementation of the proposed method. The experimental results indicate the proposed model produces word alignments better than those produced by Giza++, a state-of-the-art word alignment system, in terms of alignment error rate and F-measure. The bilingual parse trees produced for the parallel corpus can be exploited to extract bilingual phrases and train a decoder for statistical machine translation.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In this paper we address the issue of detecting defects in wood using features extracted from grayscale images. The feature set proposed here is based on the concept of texture and it is computed from the co-occurrence matrices. The features provide measures of properties such as smoothness, coarseness, and regularity. Comparative experiments using a color image based feature set extracted from percentile histograms are carried to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed feature set. Two different learning paradigms, neural networks and support vector machines, and a feature selection algorithm based on multi-objective genetic algorithms were considered in our experiments. The experimental results show that after feature selection, the grayscale image based feature set achieves very competitive performance for the problem of wood defect detection relative to the color image based features

In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We demonstrate, for the first time, micromechanical detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine and its discrimination from ascorbic acid. Microcantilever sensors were fabricated and coated with the polysaccharide chitosan by electrodeposition. The cantilevers were used for electrochemical oxidation of dopamine solution. The products of this reaction crosslink the chitosan film and create a tensile stress, bending the cantilever out of plane considerably. By contrast, electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid solution does not cause chitosan crosslinking and appreciable cantilever bending. This method is an improvement over conventional electrochemical dopamine detection techniques (e.g. cyclic voltammetry) that are highly non-specific. © 2006 Society for Chemistry and Micro-Nano systems.
