Biodiesel is an alternative to conventional diesel fuel and is defined as the mono-alkyl esters of vegetable oils and animal fats. Vegetable oils-based biodiesels can produced by transesterification process. From all of the biodiesel feedstocks, palm oil is the potential candidate. The objective of this study is to investigate the environmental impact of biodiesel production from palm oil in Indonesia using life cycle assessment methodology. The functional unit of this study is 1 ton biodiesel. The main contributor of global warming potential is the use of fertilizers and herbicides in the plantation stage contributing 53%. Co-products from palm oil process can be used for energy in the mill. Electricity also gives high environmental impact since it is purchased from the electricity grid mix which relies mostly on coal fired power plants. The biodiesel production stage was the main contributor for photochemical oxidation impact. Transportation also has a significant contribution to the environmental impacts.

There is little objective, scientific research focused on evaluating the loss exposure that results from cloud computing. In this study, a modified Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process were employed to identify and evaluate risks of cloud computing. The findings of this study are:(1) Loss exposures attributable to Jurisdiction, Burglary, Natural disaster, Normal wear and tear or malfunctions are characterized by high frequency but relatively low severity.(2) Loss exposures attributable to Privacy, Damaged or spoiled by employees intentionally or accidentally, and System vulnerability can be addressed through insurance.(3) Risks generated through Agreement or contract, Social engineering, Mistakes made by employees intentionally or accidentally, and Cross-cloud compatibility are characterized by both high frequency and severity.

Retail business has the environment reflect their unique identity. This research thus aims, firstly, to study the unique corporate retail identity. Secondly, it aims to examine the, type of product, sale activities, and storage system toward spatial needs of the sale environment. Finally, the research investigates the physical appearance conveying seasonal identity and meaning responsive to purchasers’ perception towards the final design guideline recommendation. The research anticipates that the case study could find a pattern of how people perceive and react to the built environment, and it could also reveal a proper research methodology to reveal environment and behavior pattern.

Nucleation or granule nuclei formation is an important step in the formation of anaerobic granules. This research was aimed to investigate the formation and time for granule nuclei under the addition of synthetic and natural cationic polymers. In addition, the increase activity of synthroph microorgansm in granule nuclei by adaptation with volatile fatty acid (VFA) was also studied. Three UASB reactors were used namely R1, R2 and R3 as control, addition of synthetic and natural polymers, respectively. Three reactors were operated under identical conditions. VFA was used as main substrate to adapt seed sludge and built synthroph microbial nuclei. Based on size distribution, nucleation was achieved at day 69 in R2 with average diameter size about 126 μm, size distribution 50.7% of >100 μm-aggregates and SVI 42 ml.g -1 SS. The activities of specific non-methanogens and methanogen in reactors added polymers (R2 and R3) were lower than control reactor. However, adaptation of specific microorganism succeed due to their activities from methanogens, propionate- and butyrate- degrading microorganism were higher than initial activities. R2 showed as better cationic polymer compared to chitosan for shortening nucleation phase.

Water Security was a central theme of WANA Forum 2010, where regional experts warned that the wars of the 21st century will be fought over water. Climate change will only exacerbate problems in a region already stressed by lack of water, food and political and social unrest. Across the Arc of Crisis, from Somalia, Sudan and Egypt in Africa to Yemen, Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan in West Asia, water scarcity in the region has already lead to drought and famine, loss of livelihood, the spread of water-borne diseases, forced migrations and open conflict. Water scarcity is closely linked to food and health security, making better water management a key stepping stone for poverty reduction and economic growth. If nothing changes, most of the WANA countries will encounter, in less than a generation, serious problems in managing inland freshwater, the availability of which, in sufficient quantity and quality, may become, as it is already the case in several of these countries, a main challenge for economic and social development. Wastage and pollution will then be such that « water stress » will affect, in a way or another, most of the populations of WANA countries and the poorest first of all. The effects of global warming will increase current trends. On the other hand, water scarcity in the WANA region is an issue of growing concern. With heavy demand from agriculture, growing populations and virtually no remaining untapped water sources, the need to establish water-management strategies in the region is of vital importance. WANA countries can be divided into three major agro-ecologies, each facing slightly different challenges. Rain-fed areas are dependent on a low and extremely variable rainfall, resulting in minimal yields, a problem exacerbated by frequent drought. Rainfall occurs in the form of intense and unpredictable storms, and as a result, the crusting soils are unable to absorb the moisture, which rapidly becomes lost through evaporation or runoff. In order to describe the trend of motor system development of electric vehicle and to figure out the factors that would affect the external drives and the internal resources, the thesis uses scenario analysis method to be the basic framework, adding modified Delphi method to clarify time transition into five categories: changeless, changeable, disappeared, uncertain states and newborn. More precisely, the five factors is used to construct "Scenario Analysis of Markov Modified Delphi Method". The thesis focuses on motor system to do the Foresight analysis, using the transition concept of Markov Chain to clarify the key factors of uncertain states into motor system: brushless DC (BLDC) motor, surface permanent magnet synchronous motor and Switched Reluctance In-Wheel Motor. Moreover, the changeless concept of Markov Chain is used to be background, adding the key factors of changeable and uncertain states to clarify seven kinds of scenario portfolio: basic scenario, scenario assumption I, scenario assumption II, future scenario, breakthrough scenario I, breakthrough scenario II and challenge scenario. It could make the government, industries and related departments realize the development trend of key components about electric vehicle by the scenario descriptions. It can increase their willingness to invest in the related researches to achieve future image, also shape the usable engineering technique and integrated system concepts of electric vehicles in 2020 for public.

How to gauge credit risk: An investigation based on data envelopment analysis and the Markov chain model

Credit risk management is one of the most important issues in the financial services industry. This article proposes a formal methodology based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Markov chain model to assess the credit risk of major enterprises in Taiwan. The first step of this method involves the application of factor analysis to filter financial data according to dimensions and ratios. Second, we derive the credibility scores of domestic corporations with DEA. Third, regression analysis and discriminant analysis validate the results of DEA credibility scores. At this stage, we find that most firms in Taiwan need to improve their respective financial credibility. Fourth, we apply DEA credibility scores to the Markov chain model. Finally, we construct transition matrices to observe the transition process of the financial efficiency of the firms. The advantage of the proposed method is that it is simple to follow and implement, and its empirical results can enable banks and financial institutions to monitor their credit risk quite closely. By using this method, banks and other financial institutions will be able to make more efficient lending decisions and face the Basel Capital Accord in the future. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
