An assignment-based heuristic for vehicle routing with time windows

In this paper, we consider the typical vehicle routing problem with time window constraints (VRPTW). The problem is approached via mathematical decomposition and solved using a three-stage method. First, we formulate the generalized assignment problem, which provides an approximation to the sequencing of customers that partially respects the time windows and apply the Hungarian method to obtain optimal solutions. Subsequently, we address the split of infeasible routes resulting from the assignment solution using a simple, time window-based decomposition heuristic. The best of these routes, in terms of traveling and vehicle waiting times, form part of the final solution, which is completed by the routes provided by a look-ahead heuristic applied to the remainder of the customers. The proposed method is applied to a standard literature data set, and provides very good results with respect to both the number of vehicles and the total travel time. Furthermore, the approach offers useful insights on the effect of employing optimal travel time solutions resulting from the assignment relaxation to derive partial route sets of VRPTW.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are communication networks built up of a collection of mobile devices which can communicate through wireless connections. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks have many challenges such as routing, which is the task of directing data packets from a source node to a given destination. This task is particularly hard in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: due to the mobility of the network elements and the lack of central control, robustness and adaptability in routing algorithms and work in a decentralized and self organizing way. Through the principles of systems architecting and engineering, the problem statement in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks could be defined more specifically and accurately. The uncertainties and techniques for mitigating and even taking positive advantages of them can be achieved through a framework of uncertainties as in [1]. The systems methodology framework called Total Systems Intervention (TSI) described by Flood and Jackson [2] select a systems methodology for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The purpose of this paper is to show how TSI when integrated with a framework created to understand the risks and opportunities can help develop strategies to minimize the risks and to take advantage of the opportunities for facing challenges in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks.

Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

Most industrialized countries have been able to insert innovation into their national agendas, leveraging competitiveness, economic growth and social development. Well structured national innovation systems run across all the innovation value chain: from the transfer of ideas or inventions, to their commercialization as high value and differentiated products or services, producing high economic and social impacts In developing countries, the circumstances are quite different. There are weak liaisons, low trust and poor association between economic generators (companies) and their supporting institutions (government, federations, banks and academies). Regions are not electronically prepared (e-readiness) to support the infrastructure required for the effective formation of clusters (e-readiness). Innovation is not perceived as an asset, and high value entrepreneurship is not a common finding in the entrepreneurial profiles of most professionals. There are no world class industrial enabling conditions, nor high value core capabilities, and the digital economies are creating large digital development divides instead of business opportunities. In general, the economic gap between rich countries and poor ones widens every day. To help alleviate this situation, we have developed the WIT Model (Wealth creation through Innovation and enabling Technologies). This model has been designed to create the necessary and sufficient enabling conditions and core capabilities to empower developing regions to transform their scarce resources and hostile conditions, into attractive regions with competitive industries and innovative companies, capable of producing great added and differential values, strongly interrelated with their regional social capital, so that they can compete globally as extended networks of value, and share their economic value among their local communities. Wang et al. [1] proposed a multiple-stream yield index S pk M . In addition to the point estimation, such as interval estimation are also important. In this paper we derived explicit forms of the cumulative distribution function and the probability density function of the estimated index S pk M . We developed a practical procedure and formula to provide practitioners an efficient tool for interval estimation on the yield index S pk M . An application example is illustrated. The procedure and formula are effective and easy to used, and should be expectant for in-plant applications.

After finding the significance of effective objective management and communication by reviewing previous studies on the insufficient cooperation in projects undertaken by industries, universities and government-supported research institute collaborative system, We studied how to achieve successful implementation of massive research and development projects requiring collaboration among industries, universities and government-supported research institute. We have set up an engineering process innovation model to be deemed most adequately for all practical purposes, relying on the theoretical studies on the merits and analysis of the effect of the information system based on Milestone management, Work Breakdown Structures and Web, which is known to be effective for research project (schedule) management and the objective management, and implemented a real-world web-based project (objective) management system. After a review of various R&D Project Schedule management mothods, we found that this information system was very compatible with project objective management. This project (objective) management information system has adopted a web-based approach so that geographically distant organizations having different cultures may effectively and efficiently carry out research and development projects, getting together in cyber-space and sharing information, and been equipped with an Early Warning Subsystem to allow for pre-analysis and timely response to potential problems arising over the course of the project. The system also contains an Executive Information System that in real time, automatically provides the management information required by managers with the rate of project progress (achievement, fulfillment and delay). Generated documents are also registered as reports, which are compatible with HWP documents and Microsoft Word documents through XML conversion. Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs in science and technology usually do not include teaching courses. Thus, most professors are forced to rely on their experience as students, and mimic good teaching practices of their model teachers. The work reported herein is an attempt to correct this by giving future professors an opportunity to develop good teaching practices while in graduate school, through a course in "Faculty Development". The course syllabus includes: student attraction and retention, assessment, course content, faculty development, teaching methods, program organization, relationship with students, lecture preparation, teaching techniques, ethics, and learning theory. The class is split into groups of four or less students, which must read the references and prepare short presentations for the topics planned for each meeting. Some of the students which take the course are already teaching at the time and are able to apply what they learn even as the course progresses, reporting positive reactions from their students, as well as improved learning and student attitude.

Testing impact of knowledge characteristics and relationship ties on project performance

Purpose - The aim of this paper is to empirically test and find the correlation between knowledge characteristics and relationship ties on project performance. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected via personal interviews based on a structured survey of project managers in a knowledge-intensive firm. The data were analyzed using a multiple regression model. Findings - The results show that project performance was positively related to the frequency and closeness of source, and difficulty of the "knowledge element" described in the survey. Interestingly, against the prevalent view, the source and the level of tacitness of the knowledge element were not found to be significant. Research limitations/implications - Data are limited to specific corporate setting and variables are not exhaustive, despite the fact that this study includes the most theoretically interesting variables. One implication is that strong ties to a knowledge element source are important for project success, but distinctions between internal and external sources, and degree of codification, are not. Practical implications - This study also implies that, in this day and age of knowledge management and chief knowledge officers, most of the important knowledge may already have been codified inside the firm, thus alleviating the past focus on transfer of tacit knowledge. This fact also implies that firms that are left behind in terms of managing their knowledge inside the firm stand to lose a lot more since the other firms are managing their own knowledge base better. Originality/value - This paper incorporates and empirically tests most of the variables considered important to theoreticians and practitioners in the realm of knowledge management and network theory. The latter theory is important in the field of knowledge management because it offers the link and medium in which knowledge travels and transfers.

Cancer classification through gene expression data analysis has emerged as an active area of research recently. Gene expression is the process of transcribing a gene's DNA sequence into RNA. A gene's expression level indicates the approximate number of copies of that gene's RNA produced in a cell. This is thought to correlate with the amount of the corresponding protein made. The expression of a gene provides a measure of activity of a gene under certain biochemical conditions. For example, cancers are usually reflected in the change of the expression values of certain genes. Recent studies on molecular level classification of tissues have produced remarkable results, and indicated that gene expression assays could significantly aid in the development of efficient cancer diagnosis and classification platforms. However, cancer classification based on the DNA array data is still a difficult problem. The main challenge is the overwhelming number of genes relative to the number of training samples. This implies that we must deal with a huge number of irrelevant genes. An efficient algorithm is required to reduce the computational overhead. The other challenge is from the presence of noise inherent in the data set. It makes accurate classification of data more difficult when the sample size is small. This paper applies genetic algorithms (GA) for selecting a group of relevant genes from cancer microarray data. Then the decision tree based cancer classifier is built on top of these selected genes. The performance of this approach is evaluated by comparing with other gene selection methods (e.g., t-statistics, GS method, and information gain) using the publicly available gene expression data set such as Colon, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Lung and central nervous system (CNS). Experimental results indicate that the cascade of GA and decision tree has the highest accuracy rate among different methods.

A statistical analysis of engineering project risks in the Korean shipbuilding industry

Risk management in shipbuilding projects is important in practice, but there have been few studies about risk assessment in the shipbuilding industry. The purpose of this study is to identify critical risks in shipbuilding projects and to examine the relationships among them, according to the ship production phases. A survey analysis was conducted with 248 experts from 10 major Korean shipbuilders in April 2007, and association rule mining was used as the research methodology. Twenty-six different risks are deduced. At the beginning stage of shipbuilding, it was discovered that design and financial risks were related, and human resource risks in ship design had relatively more influence but financial risks did not. At the block manufacturing stage, important risk factors were management of production equipment, supply of raw materials and labor, and quality management. Financial, technical, and managerial risks all had an important influence at this phase. At the erection stage, technical risks such as changes in design and managerial risks such as exceeding time and budget limits proved to be important. At the project finalization, phase risks were exchange rates, interest rates, timeline, fulfilling specifications, and natural disasters. The research results could be valuable for industrial participants to understand the shipbuilding risks in each construction stage.
