Diagnosis of pathological manifestations in popular housing of COHAB in Caruaru, Pernambuco: a forensic approach

The construction of Social Interest Housing through housing programs is a crucial government investment aimed at reducing housing deficits and ensuring housing rights for low-income populations. However, despite driving the growth of the construction industry, historically these constructions have faced pathological manifestations. The term "pathology" in this context refers to defects, non-conformities, and failures in constructions. Thus, this study is aimed at examining the pathological manifestations in social interest housing provided by the Popular Housing Company (COHAB-PE), focusing on popular residences built with subsidies targeted at housing programs in Caruaru, in the rural area of Pernambuco. The study, classified as exploratory and documentary following technical procedures, aims to analyze and identify recurring patterns of structural problems in popular housing. This was carried out through the analysis of 36 residences located in Caruaru, all of residential nature. The results underscore the need to investigate such issues, highlighting anomalies mostly related to construction errors, such as the lack of appropriate structural elements and waterproofing in foundations. The proposed technical solutions aim to ensure residents' safety. The lack of compliance with standards and the recurrence of the same problems over time and across different construction companies indicate a systemic failure in construction methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Herein, a low-cost and readily available sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) was used as a solid base catalyst for the depolymerization of polycarbonate (PC) via methanolysis in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a solvent. NaAlO2 was highly active for the reaction, and the performance was comparable to that of soluble strong base SrO and much higher than those of MgO and CaO. By the reaction over the catalyst, a highly pure and crystalline bisphenol A (BPA) was obtained. Among tested organic solvents, THF was the best in aiding PC methanolysis over NaAlO2 due to the polarity similar to PC according to Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs). At 60 °C, 98.1% PC conversion and 96.8% BPA yield were achieved within just 2 h. NaAlO2 was reusable without any severe catalyst deactivation in at least four runs. The mechanistic study revealed that the reaction proceeded via the methoxide pathway, with THF aiding the dissolution of PC. The reaction over NaAlO2 possessed a low apparent activation energy (Ea) of 75.1 kJ mol-1, which is the lowest ever reported so far for the reaction over solid catalysts. © 2024 The Authors. In the continuous pursuit of an energy-efficient alternative to the energy-intensive mechanochemical process, we developed a coprecipitation strategy for synthesizing halide-based solid-state electrolytes that warrant both structural control and commercial scalability. In this study, we propose a new coprecipitation approach to synthesized Li3InCl6, exhibiting both structural and electrochemical performance stability, with a high ionic conductivity of 1.42 × 10-3 S cm-1, comparable to that of traditionally prepared counterparts. Through the in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique, we unveil the stability mechanisms and rapid chemical reactions of Li3InCl6 under dry Ar, dry O2, and high-humidity atmosphere, which were not previously reported. Furthermore, the fast reversibility capability of moisture-exposed Li3InCl6 was tracked under vacuum, revealing the optimal recovery conditions at low temperatures (150-200 °C). This work addresses the critical challenges in structural engineering and sustainable mass production and provides insights into chemical reactions under real-world conditions. © 2024 The Authors. Reuse of sodium–doped iridium oxide nanoparticles as a bio–stimulating electrode by a chemical and electrochemical recovery process

A sequential chlorination and electrochemical reduction process is demonstrated to convert Na–doped iridium oxide nanoparticles into useful IrIIICl63−(aq) serving as the precursor for the fabrication of bio–stimulating electrode. The Na–doped iridium oxide nanoparticles are treated in 35 wt% hydrochloric acid at 70 °C for 18 h to form IrIVCl62−(aq) with pH of 0.3, so the latter could be readily reduced to IrIIICl63−(aq) at a potentiostatic mode of 0.6 V (vs. SCE). The oxidation state and the nature of complexing ligands for the regenerated IrIIICl63− and IrIVCl62−, as well as commercially available IrIIICl63− are validated by X–ray Absorption Spectroscopy. UV–Vis profiles of regenerated IrIVCl62−(aq) are recorded and the absorbance at 487 nm signal is benchmarked against that of standard IrIVCl62−(aq) to obtain the effective regeneration ratio of 68.6%. X–ray diffraction patterns of Na–doped iridium oxide nanoparticles before and after the annealing treatment indicate the amorphous structure facilitates the chlorination step. The regenerated IrIIICl63− is reused to synthesize Na–doped iridium oxide thin film serving as a bio–stimulating electrode for implantable bio–electronics. The regenerated Na–doped iridium oxide thin film reveals a charge-storage capacity of 0.32 mC/cm2-nm and impressive stability that are comparable to those of fresh Na–doped iridium oxide thin film derived from commercially available IrIIICl63−. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Providing robust prognosis predictions for cancers with limited data samples remains a challenge for precision oncology. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines multi-task learning (MTL) and graph neural networks (GNNs) to address this issue. By representing gene-gene interactions as a graph network, our approach leverages multi-task learning to effectively capture the relationships of genes relevant to the oncogenesis and progression of breast, lung, and colon cancer. We demonstrate that our approach improves the cancer prognosis prediction for cancers with fewer samples, such as colon adenocarcinoma, by leveraging the shared gene-gene interactions across different cancer types, obtaining increases in the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 24%. Our work contributes to the field of smart healthcare by demonstrating the potential of MTL and GNNs for enhancing cancer prognosis prediction, even with limited data samples. © 2024 IEEE.

Pupillometry measures pupil size, and several open-source algorithms are available to analyse pupillometry data. However, only a few studies compared these algorithms’ accuracy and computational resources. This study aims to compare the accuracy of computer vision-based algorithms (Swirski, Starburst, PuRe, ElSe, ExCuSe algorithms) and the machine learning algorithm, DeepLabCut, to the double-blinded human examiners (gold-standard). Training of DeepLabCut with different architectures and a variable number of markers (2-9 markers) was done on an open-source dataset. The duration of training was statistically longer for the ResNet152 model compared to the MobileNet model. The pupil diameters in computer vision-based software such as PuRe, Starburst, and Swirski were statistically different from human measurements. MobileNet 2 and 3 marker models were the closest to the human measurements. In conclusion, this work highlights the efficiency of lower marker models based on MobileNet architecture in DeepLabCut, which consumes fewer computational resources and is more accurate. © 2024 Institute of Information technology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg²⁺) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg²⁺ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg²⁺ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water. © 2024 The Authors. The performance of single-junction mixed-halide perovskite-based solar cells is limited by thermalization and spectral losses. With advanced device architectures, the perovskite/perovskite heterostructure, where two or more photoactive layers are stacked together, can help to minimize these losses. In this work, we conformally transfer printed a narrow-band-gap perovskite over a spin-coated wide-band-gap perovskite layer to form a perovskite/perovskite heterostructure. This heterostructure results in broader spectral coverage and the higher position of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of MAPbBrxI3-x compared to MA0.7FA0.3Pb0.5Sn0.5I3, forming a cascaded energy level alignment between photoactive layers. Additionally, direct evidence of improved morphology has been observed with the transfer-printing technique in heterostructure formation. The bottom layer provides favorable assistance for the growth of the top perovskite near the interface with good coverage and maintains the quality of the film. Thus, the increased crystallinity and reduced grain boundaries lead to less defects. This reduction played a key role in suppressing recombination losses at the interfaces, ultimately leading to improved device performance. These inherent properties have a positive impact on the photovoltaic response of the device, resulting in broader spectral response and power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 14.76% in the heterostructure device. A notable improvement is achieved compared to control single-junction devices, which typically have a PCE of nearly 10% with printed-Sn and 12% with spin-Br-based devices. Moreover, the heterostructure-based device exhibits high stability, retaining almost 80% of its initial PCE value for almost 1000 h with proper encapsulation. This paper presents a study and development on the thermal mapping of a Three-phase Induction Motor for harsh environments application. These machines’ exceptional performance and precise speed control make them essential equipment in multiple industrial processes, such as Artificial Lift, which integrates with a multistage centrifugal pump to elevate fluids from the reservoirs to the surface. Increased motor speeds for higher production requirements can result in temperature rise, damaging the stator winding. Employing the Raman Distributed Temperature Sensing System (RDTS), we generate a comprehensive heat distribution map of the motor. ANSYS Motor-CAD was applied for computational simulations to perform steady-state thermal analysis, giving an overview of heat transfer among internal components and thermal limits for the instrumented motor. This preliminary study presents a series of experimental tests to evaluate the advantages of fiber optic temperature sensing in harsh environments, emphasizing its significance in improving electrical machines’ performance and reliability. © 2024 SPIE.
