Ionic liquids combined with supercriticalﬂuid technology hold great promise as working solvents for developing compact *** liquids,which are organic molten salts,typically have extremely low volatility and high functionality,but possess high viscos-ities,surface tensions and low diffusion coefﬁcients,which can limit their ***_(2),on the other hand,especially in its supercritical state,is a green solvent that can be used advantageously when combined with the ionic liquid to provide viscosity and surface tension reduction and to promote mass *** solubility of CO_(2) in the ionic liquid is key to estimating the important physical properties that include partition coefﬁcients,viscosities,densities,interfacial tensions,thermal conductivities and heat capacities needed in contactor *** this work,we examine a subset of available high pressure pure component ionic liquid PVT data and high pressure CO_(2)-ionic liquid solubility data and report new correlations for CO_(2)-ionic liquid systems with equations of state that have some industrial applications including:(1)general,(2)fuel desulfurization,(3)CO_(2) capture,and(4)chiral *** measurements of solubility data for the CO_(2) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate,[bmim][OcSO4]system are reported and *** the correlation of the CO_(2) ionic liquid phase behavior,the Peng-Robinson and the Sanchez-Lacombe equations of state were considered and are *** is shown that excellent correlation of CO_(2) solubility can be obtained with either equation and they share some common characteristics regarding inter-action *** the Sanchez-Lacombe equation,parameters that are derived from the supercritical region were found to be important for obtaining good correlation of the CO_(2)-ionic liquid solubility data.

In this study, an infant behavior control model is developed to prevent infant injuries by changing environmental factors. Infant climbing behaviors that can lead to fall injuries are the primary focus of the control model. Based on observed behavioral data, the probabilistic causal relationships between object attributes, infant characteristics, and climbing behaviors were modeled as a Bayesian Network Model. It was demonstrated that infant climbing behaviors could be predicted by the object attributes and controlled by changing object designs. It was also shown that infant injuries could be controlled by integrating both the developed behavior control model and the explanatory model of injuries that was constructed from infant injury data.

To investigate the local environment's effect on the lifetime and quantum yield of extended polymer chains in the absence of intra-and interchain aggregation, short, rodlike polymers of poly(2,5-di-n-octyloxy-1,4- phenylenevinylene) (DO-PPV) were dissolved in chloroform and then embedded in a polystyrene matrix. The fluorescence lifetime was found to increase by 45% in moving from the solution to the matrix form. By using the absorption and emission spectra of the chloroform solution to estimate the radiative and nonradiative rate constants for the polymer in solution, along with calculations based on an exciton model, the corresponding decay rate constants for the polymer embedded in the matrix were obtained. The close agreement between the calculated and experimental values of fluorescent lifetime in the matrix proved the applicability of the exciton model used. On the basis of the model, the average quantum yield of isolated polymers in the matrix was calculated to be a factor of 2 higher than in solutionsan effect arising from a 59% decrease in the nonradiative rate constant and, to a smaller extent, from a 20% increase in the radiative decay rate due to the different dielectric constants of the environments. These results suggest that by extending and isolating single luminescent polymers, high quantum yield devices are possible. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

Background: Gene regulation is a key mechanism in higher eukaryotic cellular processes. One of the major challenges in gene regulation studies is to identify regulators affecting the expression of their target genes in specific biological processes. Despite their importance, regulators involved in diverse biological processes still remain largely unrevealed. In the present study, we propose a kernel-based approach to efficiently identify core regulatory elements involved in specific biological processes using gene expression profiles. Results: We developed a framework that can detect correlations between gene expression profiles and the upstream sequences on the basis of the kernel canonical correlation analysis (kernel CCA). Using a yeast cell cycle dataset, we demonstrated that upstream sequence patterns were closely related to gene expression profiles based on the canonical correlation scores obtained by measuring the correlation between them. Our results showed that the cell cycle-specific regulatory motifs could be found successfully based on the motif weights derived through kernel CCA. Furthermore, we identified co-regulatory motif pairs using the same framework. Conclusion: Given expression profiles, our method was able to identify regulatory motifs involved in specific biological processes. The method could be applied to the elucidation of the unknown regulatory mechanisms associated with complex gene regulatory processes. © 2012 BioMed Central Ltd .

This paper describes the design, simulation and fabrication of a 3-DOF (degree of freedom) micro accelerometer with wireless readout system. The fabricated accelerometer has dimensions of 1000μmx1000μm×500μm (Length×Width×Thickness) and can detect three components of linear acceleration simultaneously. The sensitivities to X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis are 30μV/g, 30μV/g and 23μV/g, respectively. A three input-channels wireless transceiver system has been developed and integrated with the sensing element to form a sensor node. The antenna has been designed to transmit the signal from sensor node to a server at a communication frequency of 2.4GHz over a distance of 20m. Three output signals, i.e. X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis, from the accelerometer are transmitted to the server by time division multiplexing protocol. This allows our wireless sensor system to detect three components of acceleration independently. © 2008 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Locality data available for many, if not most, species of Neotropical frogs are based on written descriptions of the collecting sites, not on GPS device determined coordinate data. The pre-GPS device data are imprecise relative to GPS data. Niche modeling is a powerful technique for predicting geographic distributions that provides the best results when the locality data are precise. The purpose of this study is to determine whether imprecise historical locality data are sufficient such that niche modeling techniques can yield realistic new insights to species-level distributions. Two sets of frogs of the genus Leptodactylus that have known different kinds of distributions are evaluated: two species with broad, presumably continuous distributions, and four species known to occur in patchy, disjunct habitats in South America. BIOCLIM, a presence-only environmental niche modeling algorithm,was used to define suitable occupancy areas based on multiple sets of environmental parameters that include: monthly mean, max, and min temperatures, and monthly precipitation. A Nature Conservancy — Natureserve ecoregion layer and a high resolution elevation layer were also included in the analyses. Our analyses yield new realistic insights and questions regarding distributions of the Leptodactylus species we evaluated. We recommend incorporation of the Nature Conservancy — Natureserve layer to evaluate Neotropical distributions, as the layer gave much more robust results than use of only the climatic variable analyses.

To understand the fuel performance, the thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity and heat capacity are quite important. However, it is very hard to experimentally determine the physical properties of plutonium as well as americium compounds due to their handling-difficulties. Molecular dynamics (MD) would be a specific method to describe the physical properties of such materials. In the present study, we have investigated thermophysical properties of PuO2, AmO2, and their solid solutions in the temperature range from 300 to 2,500 K. The lattice parameter, compressibility, heat capacity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. A Morse-type potential function added to the Busing-Ida type potential was employed as the potential for interatomic interactions. The calculated lattice parameters of (Pu, Am)O2 obeyed Vegard’s law, and the values increased with temperature. The heat capacities of (Pu, Am)O2 were similar in any compositions. The thermal conductivities of (Pu, Am)O2 were lower than those of PuO2 and AmO2, indicating that a point-defect scattering effect of phonons could be realized in the MD calculations.
