A wave-packet ansatz is used to model noise generation by organized, large-scale structures. The spectrum of the acoustic field is expressed in terms of two-point space-time correlations of hydrodynamic pressure on a conical surface surrounding the jet plume. The surface is sufficiently near the turbulent flow region to be dominated by hydrodynamic disturbances, yet sufficiently far that the wave equation can be used to project the nearfield pressure to the acoustic field. In the present study, a 78-microphone array was used to measure hydrodynamic pressure on the conical surface at a variety of acoustic Mach numbers and temperature ratios. At each jet cross section, 6 microphones are staggered in the azimuthal direction allowing resolution of pressure up to azimuthal mode number m=2. We compare recent jet noise measurements using an 80-microphone conical mid-field array with those derived from the near-field hydrodynamic array data, showing reasonably good predictions. Source model parameters are identified for various jet temperature ratios. Results show that changes in jet noise directivity with heating can be attributed to contraction of the wave-packet scale.

Gold colloid possessing both lipase and PEG tethered chains on the surface was prepared by the adsorption of lipase, followed by the immobilization of the PEG/polycation block copolymer on the colloid surface. The obtained colloid showed a high dispersion stability at a high salt concentration. The enzymatic activity of the lipase on the colloid complex retained intact. Surprisingly, more than 95% of the initial enzymatic activity was retained after repeated thermal treatments (5 times) at 58°C for 10 min. The PEG condensed layer between the immobilized enzyme on the gold colloid may prevent the denaturation of the enzyme at high temperature.

In this paper the authors study the applicability of Artificial Neural Networks for the modelling of a widely used particular welding process in automotive industry: pulsed gas metal welding process (GMAW-P). Applying this artificial intelligence technology requires the introduction of input and output data to the network. To achieve this, an experiment was designed and performed. The main functions of the proposed model are: to simulate the process for purposes of training operators;to improve welding process performance by identifying regions that are insensible to variations on input parameters;and finally to increase the flexibility of a robotic welding cell. The concrete benefits obtained from the GMAW-P process model development are: optimization of critical variables of the welding process, support for development of virtual process and prototypes, definition of a robust welding procedure, quick response to product change and support in welding training.

This paper reports the pneumatic PDMS micro finger as an endeffector of robot. The micro finger structures consist of two PDMS films with different mixing ratio of the base polymer and curing agent. An applied air pressure mainly contributes to the generation of the pulling force of the top PDMS layer with excess Si-H group and the large deformation of the flexible bottom layer with excess vinyl group. This combination of the micro finger or hand with a rigid PDMS layer and a flexible one is based on the human being's finger or hand. For the proper structural design rule, in this paper, the micro finer structures with different balloon shape are fabricated and tested by a pneumatic force. While the thickness ratio of the bottom layer and the top one is about 3, the bending angle of micro finger is most sensitive to the applied air pressure. During the repeat test for about 5 hours, there are no any noticeable degradation on the bending motion and the structural failure. The hybrid motion of the micro finger with two or three degree of freedom in micro world and the guide robot in macro world is successfully realized by using VR (Virtual Realty) system.

This paper describes an online 3D reconstruction system from stereo image sequences to obtain a dense local world model for robot navigation. The proposed method consists of three components: 1) stereo depth map calculation, 2) correspondence calculation in time sequential images by tracking raw image features, 3) 6DOF camera motion estimation by RANSAC and integrate depth map into 3D reconstructed model. We examined and evaluated our method in a motion capture environment for comparison. Finally experimental results of a humanoid robot H7 are denoted.

Currently, risk to privacy on the Internet poses a serious problem. So various personal information is treated online. This problem is also prevalent in distance learning systems since the existing privacy function is not sufficient to ensure safety. In this paper, we propose an architecture for privacy after considering a learner's communication for distance learning. We define privacy as a guaranteed learning method wherein a learner's information is treated as confidential. We have implemented the prototype and performed several experiments. We report the results in this paper.

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

This paper discusses a method to determine the optimal node location before a long distance FWA network (22 GHz band, 6.3 Mbit/s) is set. During our 3 years experiment, we found out that the long distance FWA net with 2 links (about 60 km) was down for approximately 42 hours per year due to heavy rain fall conditions. This means that the long distance FWA net is practicable to some extent. We discuss a method to estimate the working ratio between two unknown locations using AMeDAS weather data. By using this method, an appropriate node location can be decided before FWA net is deployed. This approach can improve the working ratio in the sense of link-up continuation.
