Performance analysis of sweep-gas membrane distillation (SGMD) modules remains a challenging problem owing to the complex interaction and strong coupling between the flow parameters on the feed and permeate sides as well as the multiscale nature of gas permeation in the membrane pores. In this study, a framework for a practical optimization tool for SGMD was developed in which experimental data, numerical simulations, and machine learning (ML) techniques were systematically utilized. A high-resolution numerical simulation of the SGMD was introduced and validated for SGMD modules. The high-resolution numerical model was used to train an ML model with noticeable speedup and lower computational cost. The trained ML model was coupled with a multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize the SGMD performance for a large-scale SGMD module with a novel and complex flow pattern. The SGMD, comprising five different modules with parallel sweep-gas patterns, showed interesting behavior in a sensitivity study based on modified Latin hypercube sampling. The sweep-gas temperature had the highest impact on the water permeation flux, which was due to the reheating of the feed flow as a result of the special configuration of the SGMD. Furthermore, the optimization solver successfully obtained the optimal design conditions for two different design scenarios by achieving a design target defined for an ammonia recovery ratio of 90% and an ammonia concentration of 25% at the sweep-gas outlet. Most energy exchanges take place through the building skin. The skin characteristics play a decisive role in the extent of these exchanges, but they are somewhat more varied in the double skin façade (DSF). Among these characteristics, cavity segmentation has a noticeable effect on the implementation of the DSF in different directions during the hot and cold seasons. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation of high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. This study used DesignBuilder software to study sixty-four segmentation component scenarios in an eight-story residential building in Isfahan, Iran. Moreover, a proposed hybrid model utilizing the hybridization of the Hunger Game Search and Gradient Boosting (HGS-GB) algorithm was employed to estimate energy consumption in various scenarios involving lighting, heating, cooling, and total scenarios. The available outcomes revealed that the HGS-GB model had a better performance in comparison with other individual models, such as Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The R2 values for lighting, heating, cooling, and total energy estimation were 0.9993, 0.9958, 0.9991, and 0.9922, respectively. The findings of this study suggest the significance of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation in high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

We have successfully demonstrated, for the first time, an innovative back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible electro-optic modulator and memory (EOMM) based on Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI) micro-ring resonator (MRR) integrated with Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconate Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O (HZO) non-volatile analog memory. High non-volatile memory and modulation performances are both achieved in a single compact device, exhibiting high extinction ratio of 13.3 dB, excellent efficiency of 66pm/V, stable nine-state switching, record-high endurance exceeding 10 9 cycles. This is accomplished by utilizing Pockels effect in LNOI, induced by electric-field effect from remnant HZO ferroelectric polarization. We studied the system implementation of reconfigurable chiplet-interposer photonic interconnect, enabled by the EOMM and EOMM with hybrid thermal-optical modulation. Our model shows a potential 70% energy efficiency improvement over conventional electrical interposer interconnect. We have also tested the integration of the EOMM with POET technologies’ 400G Tx/Rx optical interposer chip and studied a limited scale demonstration of the EOMM device.

For too many undergraduate minority students, remote sensing and its plethora of applications to geophysics yet remain new, foreign, and mysterious. These students, even with the requisite STEM backgrounds, lack the exposure, the awareness, the understanding, and the engagement in the foray of remote sensing and the unique lens it provides to probe and unearth new ways of gaining knowledge about the environment. To strengthen undergraduate education, to adequately prepare candidates to become the next generation of geoscientists, to empower and sustain underserved neighborhoods, and to assist in replenishing the geoscience workforce, unique paradigms of teaching and learning about remote sensing are needed. At the center for Remote Sensing and Earth System Sciences (ReSESS) at the New York City College of technology (City Tech), remote sensing is used as a catalyst to attract and to engage students from underserved communities in studying urban climate within their local neighborhoods. Results indicate that this approach of using remote sensing to attract students to urban climate increased awareness and understanding in the geosciences, and it motivated students to share their newfound knowledge in environmental sustainability initiatives with their fellow local citizens.

Chromatographic investigation on the ethyl acetate extract of the soft coral Lobophytum durum collected from the waters of Guishan Island in northeast Taiwan resulted in the isolation of three sterols 1–3, including one new sterol, 3β-hydroxy-25-methylene-5-cholesten-7-one (1), and two previously reported sterols, 7-oxogorgosterol (2), and (24R)-ergostane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol 25-monoacetate (3). The structures of sterols 1–3 were determined by extensive spectroscopic data analysis and by comparison with literatures. Additionally, the 24R-configuration of sterol 3 was identified by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 13C chemical shifts for first time. The anti-inflammatory activities of sterols 1–3 were evaluated by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase against activated human neutrophils. © 2023

In recent years, with the increase in the number of dogs, paralysis of the lower limbs due to herniated discs in dogs has become a problem. There is no fundamental cure for this condition, and the main treatment is physical therapy. Usually, these dogs need physical therapy with a physical therapist every day, but it’s not realistic. Therefore, it is required that the owner be effective rehabilitation at home. However, quantitative evaluation methods have not been established for physiotherapy because physiotherapy is performed by veterinarians based on their experience. In this paper, we proposes a musculoskeletal model of the dog’s lower limb to analyze the dynamics of rehabilitation movements and confirm its validity by comparing the muscular activity obtained from the model with the measured EMG data. Using proposed model, we performed a simulation experiment to discuss the relationship between the timing of the input force and muscular activity by changing the timing of the input force. From the data obtained in the experiment, we investigated the relationship between the timing of the input force and the muscular activity and clarify how to input a support force for the physical therapy.

Performance characterization of a novel compact dust collector with pleated filter cartridges

A compact dust collector loaded with four pleated filter cartridges is numerically studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The performance of the dust collector is evaluated during filtration and during backwashing, and the predictions are compared with the experimental results. In the filtration operation, the upper right corner entry design effectively guides the airflow to the two sides of the four cartridges through the air opposite-side-wall impacting and rebounding. A relatively poor filtration is found at the right side of the left lower cartridge. The CFD predictions agree well with the experimental data in terms of showing better backwash cleaning performances of the lower cartridges and at the cartridge front positions. During the 50 ms pulse-jet backwashing, the difference between the maximum and minimum air mass flow rates through a total of 16 × 2 inject holes is less than 4.0%. The high pressure of 0.5 MPa draws the air flowing from the normal exit, which acts as the majority of the backwashing air (ca. 73.7%). The hydrostatic pressure acting on the four cartridges is greater than 1750 Pa in 80% of the pulse-jet cleaning time. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Defects in gastric progenitor cell differentiation are associated with various gastric disorders, including atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying the multilineage differentiation of gastric progenitor cells during healthy homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, using a single-cell RNA sequencing method, Quartz-Seq2, we analyzed the gene expression dynamics of progenitor cell differentiation toward pit cell, neck cell, and parietal cell lineages in healthy adult mouse corpus tissues. Enrichment analysis of pseudotime-dependent genes and a gastric organoid assay revealed that EGFR-ERK signaling promotes pit cell differentiation, whereas NF-κB signaling maintains gastric progenitor cells in an undifferentiated state. In addition, pharmacological inhibition of EGFR in vivo resulted in a decreased number of pit cells. Although activation of EGFR signaling in gastric progenitor cells has been suggested as one of the major inducers of gastric cancers, our findings unexpectedly identified that EGFR signaling exerts a differentiation-promoting function, not a mitogenic function, in normal gastric homeostasis.

Background: LZ91 Magnesium alloy with a dual-phase structure has improved mechanical properties and a low density of about 1.48 g/cm3 but their limited resistance to corrosion limits their application. Therefore, it is a great challenge to increase the stability of LZ91 alloys under corrosive factors and environments. Methods: This study uses micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and an electroless nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) plated composite film to increase the corrosion resistance of LZ91 magnesium alloy. Before electroless Ni-P plating, the MAO layers are activated by palladium catalysts at different pH values to produce composite coatings. SEM, EDS and Image J are used to determine the surface properties and elemental composition of the samples. The corrosion resistance is measured using a potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Findings: The results show that the MAO coating is activated by an acid catalyst and the surface is obviously corroded. The electroless Ni-P plating grows into the MAO coating and the substrate corrodes. Therefore, corrosive medium (chloride ion) easily enter to the substrate and pitting corrosion occurred. On the contrary, activation by a neutral catalyst (pH=7) maintains the original structure of the MAO coating and provides a good bonding interface for the Ni-P coating. Form the potentiodynamic analysis can be finds that the corrosion potential for the neutral catalyst treated sample is -0.35V and the corrosion current density value is 1.77×10−6 A/cm2, so the corrosion characteristic become better than the acid catalyst treated samples. In terms of the long-term resistance after 48 h, EIS analysis shows that the resistance value remains at about 7.6×104 Ω•cm2. A composite coating that is compact and with excellent resistance to corrosion resistance is produced, which provides better protection for LZ91 magnesium alloys. © 2023 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers

Gelatin, widely employed in hydrogel dressings, faces limitations when used in high fluid environments, hindering effective material adhesion to wound sites and subsequently reducing treatment efficacy. The rapid degradation of conventional hydrogels often results in breakdown before complete wound healing. Thus, there is a pressing need for the development of durable adhesive wound dressings. In this study, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was utilized as a coupling agent to create gelatin-silica hybrid (G-H) dressings through the sol-gel method. The coupling reaction established covalent bonds between gelatin and silica networks, enhancing structural stability. Dopamine (DP) was introduced to this hybrid (G-H-D) dressing to further boost adhesiveness. The efficacy of the dressings for wound management was assessed through in-vitro and in-vivo tests, along with ex-vivo bioadhesion testing on pig skin. Tensile bioadhesion tests demonstrated that the G-H-D material exhibited approximately 2.5 times greater adhesion to soft tissue in wet conditions compared to pure gelatin. Moreover, in-vitro and in-vivo wound healing experiments revealed a significant increase in wound healing rates. Consequently, this material shows promise as a viable option for use as a moist wound dressing. © 2023
