To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Path tracking in wireless and mobile environments is a fundamental technology for ubiquitous location-based services (LBSs). In particular, it is very challenging to develop highly accurate and cost-efficient tracking systems applied to the anonymous areas where the floor plans are not available for security and privacy reasons. This paper proposes a novel path tracking approach for large Wi-Fi areas based on the time-stamped unlabeled mobility map which is constructed from Smith-Waterman received signal strength (RSS) measurement matching. Instead of conventional location fingerprinting, we construct mobility map with the technique of dimension reduction from the raw measurement space into a low-dimensional embedded manifold. The feasibility of our proposed approach is verified by the real-world experiments in the HKUST campus Wi-Fi networks, sMobileNet. The experimental results prove that our approach is adaptive and capable of achieving an adequate precision level in path tracking. © 2014 Mu Zhou et al.

This paper presents a new multi-scale place recognition system inspired by the recent discovery of overlapping, multi-scale spatial maps stored in the rodent brain. By training a set of Support Vector Machines to recognize places at varying levels of spatial specificity, we are able to validate spatially specific place recognition hypotheses against broader place recognition hypotheses without sacrificing localization accuracy. We evaluate the system in a range of experiments using cameras mounted on a motorbike and a human in two different environments. At 100% precision, the multiscale approach results in a 56% average improvement in recall rate across both datasets. We analyse the results and then discuss future work that may lead to improvements in both robotic mapping and our understanding of sensory processing and encoding in the mammalian brain.

This paper studies the statistical errors for the fingerprint-based RADAR neighbor matching localization with the linearly calibrated reference points (RPs) in logarithmic received signal strength (RSS) varying Wi-Fi environment. To the best of our knowledge, little comprehensive analysis work has appeared on the error performance of neighbor matching localization with respect to the deployment of RPs. However, in order to achieve the efficient and reliable location-based services (LBSs) as well as the ubiquitous context-awareness in Wi-Fi environment, much attention has to be paid to the highly accurate and cost-efficient localization systems. To this end, the statistical errors by the widely used neighbor matching localization are significantly discussed in this paper to examine the inherent mathematical relations between the localization errors and the locations of RPs by using a basic linear logarithmic strength varying model. Furthermore, based on the mathematical demonstrations and some testing results, the closed-form solutions to the statistical errors by RADAR neighbor matching localization can be an effective tool to explore alternative deployment of fingerprint-based neighbor matching localization systems in the future. © 2014 Mu Zhou et al.

The goal of this paper is to show a study to evaluate the possibility of using ontologies to support maintenance procedures in IT equipment in a small power company. The aim is to improve the degree of reliability in detection of potential failures and defects in maintenance processes of information technology critical assets, trying to obtain less downtime of services that they provide. The methodological procedures used in this study were literature review, to present the modeling concepts of knowledge focused on ontologies creation and state of the art in building of field procedures describing the steps from initial drafting of ontology finishing with their tests. The results demonstrate that it is viable to utilize this technique, where the network equipment that keeps critical services require high level of availability on meeting the needs of the corporation.

Fabrication of graphene was demonstrated by electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in an ammonium hydroxide solution. The processing parameter of applied voltage was optimized to accomplish graphene productivity and desired chemical composition. Images from the atomic force microscopy showed graphene sheets with lateral sizes of several hundred nanometers. Images from the transmission electron microscopy indicated the existence of stacked graphene sheets with thickness of a few graphene layers. Raman spectroscopy confirmed variation of assynthesized graphene and bulk graphite. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy suggested the formation of graphene oxide at large voltage. © 2014 The Electrochemical Society.

Existence of a Thermodynamic Spin-Glass Phase in the Zero-Concentration Limit of Anisotropic Dipolar Systems

The nature of ordering in dilute dipolar interacting systems dates back to the work of Debye and is one of the most basic, oldest and as-of-yet unsettled problems in magnetism. While spin-glass order is readily observed in several RKKY-interacting systems, dipolar spin glasses are the subject of controversy and ongoing scrutiny, e.g., in LiHoxY1−xF4, a rare-earth randomly diluted uniaxial (Ising) dipolar system. In particular, it is unclear if the spin-glass phase in these paradigmatic materials persists in the limit of zero concentration or not. We study an effective model of LiHoxY1−xF4 using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations that combine parallel tempering with a special cluster algorithm tailored to overcome the numerical difficulties that occur at extreme dilutions. We find a paramagnetic to spin-glass phase transition for all Ho+ ion concentrations down to the smallest concentration numerically accessible, 0.1%, and including Ho+ ion concentrations that coincide with those studied experimentally up to 16.7%. Our results suggest that randomly diluted dipolar Ising systems have a spin-glass phase in the limit of vanishing dipole concentration, with a critical temperature vanishing linearly with concentration. The agreement of our results with mean-field theory testifies to the irrelevance of fluctuations in interactions strengths, albeit being strong at small concentrations, to the nature of the low-temperature phase and the functional form of the critical temperature of dilute anisotropic dipolar systems. Deviations from linearity in experimental results at the lowest concentrations are discussed.

Thermal Activiation of Sr3Fe2O7 Electrocatalysts for Water Oxidation at Neutral pH

The Ruddlesden-Popper-type layered perovskite strontium ferrite (Sr3Fe2O7) was studied as an electrocatalyst for water oxidation to molecular oxygen (O2). The electrocatalytic activity of Sr3Fe2O7 was found to be dependent on the temperature, and the overpotential for water oxidation was markedly lower at 70 oC than at 30 oC. Namely, at pH 7, O2 evolution initiated with overpotentials of approximately 100 and 300 mV at 70 and 30 oC, respectively. When lanthanum-substituted Sr3Fe2O7, Sr2.6La0.4Fe2O7, was used to catalyze O2 evolution, the distinctive temperature dependence disappeared and O2 evolution was driven with a low overpotential even at 30 oC. These results suggest that the formation of Fe4+ is important for decreasing the overpotential for water oxidation to produce O2.
