Standard notions of an “Earthlike” planet rely solely on physical and material properties, like planetary mass, radius, and surface temperature. Here, we introduce a novel, relational perspective on what defines “Earthlikeness.” In our process-based framework, rocky planets are local pockets of free energy that have the potential to drive the emergence of dynamically persistent systems that coevolve with one another. Examples of dynamically persistent planetary phenomena include magnetic dynamos, mantle convection, tectonic regimes, deep volatile cycles, global climate feedbacks, biogeochemical cycles, and the biosphere. When two or more processes couple to one another such that they gain causal efficacy over one another's persistence, some degree of planetary-scale homeostasis may emerge. In astrobiology, Earthlike exoplanets are often considered to be priority targets for the search for life elsewhere. We suggest that a process-based framework for Earthlikeness has the potential to widen our search space and inspire novel planetary-scale biosignatures, or “Gaiasignatures,” that may be essential for detecting exoplanetary biospheres. Additionally, a process-based view of life can influence the development of agnostic biosignatures at all scales. In contrast to the dominant scientific perspective, which has tended to engender a materialistic worldview, relational ontologies may contribute to our scientific understanding of Earth as a network of dynamically persistent systems, humanity as an integral part of nature, and the search for life in the universe. Relationship between extreme rainfall and design flood-discharge of the Ciliwung river

Flood in Jakarta is occurred almost every year due to inadequate flood control systems to the flood prediction, inadequate drainage system, and trash that clog the drainage. The increase of rainfall is also one of the causes of flooding. That changing rainfall characteristics can affect river flow. This study aims to analyze the trend of rainfall in different time frames and its effect to flood discharge. The extreme rainfall trend is analyzed for every 15 years period from rainfall data of 1985 to 2019 for several return periods. Three period is selected for trend analysis and compared to the baseline data (1985-2019). Based on the analysis, the extreme rainfall for 1995-2009 and 2005-2019 period compared to the baseline is increased for all return periods. The increasing percentage is approximately 3-10% and 5-16% respectively. Since the extreme rainfall is increased, the design discharge is also increased for all return periods. The increasing percentage for 1995-2009 and 2005-2019 period compared to the baseline is 4-12% and 7-19% respectively. However, the design rainfall and discharge for the period 1985-1999 is lower than the baseline.

Application of 2-D numerical model on flood control and sediment transportation for barrage types

Flash-flood occurs in the river due to the rainfall the catchment area from events of typhoon and hard rain, the construction of weirs at downstream is required for regulating flow and water elevation. For analyzing the efficiency of flood control and sediment transportation of different weir types, the 2-D numerical model (SRH-2D) is established to simulate the water area of Bitan Weir in the Xindian River. The fixed type barrage, compound type barrage and lodging type barrage are discussed in this study, and the cases of normal and 200-year flood return period are simulated by SRH-2D. The assessment result shows that the compound type barrage has both the water storage function of fixed type barrage and the water elevation regulation function of lodging type barrage. The two-dimensional simulation results show that the performance of flood control is better than original one and desilting outlet on the right side of compound type barrage can reduce the silting depth of about 0.5 meter at the upstream area of Bitan Barrage, but the influence area of scouring and silting is limited. Furthermore, the uplifting height of lodging gate on the central body of compound type barrage raise from 1.5 to 3.0 meters, which can improve the silting situation and reduce of the silting depth about 0.5 to 1.0 meter at the upstream right bank of Bitan Barrage, hi order to reach the goal of flood prevention and water environment improvement, the results of this study can provide useful information on management and reconstruction of Bitan Barrage. © 2021, Taiwan Agricultural Engineers Society. In 2017 summer, we observed a widespread bottom hypoxic zone at the lower estuary of the Pearl River estuary (PRE). We observed i) bacterial and AOA biomass accumulation, ii) oxygen consumption rates (respiration and nitrification) in the hypoxic zone. The potential microbial interaction of both oxygen-consuming microbes in the hypoxia remained unclear. To investigate the potential microbial interaction between AOA and heterotrophic bacteria in the hypoxic zone, we used bacterial and AOA communities (inferred from 16S rRNA gene and amoA gene, respectively) and multi-comparisons between the co-occurrence networks retrieved from DNA and RNA levels to reflect the pattern. We observed a highly diverse and active bacterial community in the hypoxia zone. The network topology revealed that Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes (Flavobacteriales), Alphaproteobacteria (Rhodobacterales and Rhodospirillales), Marinimicrobia, Cyanobacteria (Synechococcales), and AOA sublineages were module hubs and connectors, indicating that they were the keystone taxa of the microbial communities. The hub-subnetwork further showed robust co-occurrence between Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes (Flavobacteriales), Alphaproteobacteria (Rhodobacterales and Rhodospirillales), Marinimicrobia with AOA sublineages, and Nitrospinae (presumably NOB)) reflecting the formation of Degradation-Nitrification microbial assemblage in the hypoxia zone. The subnetworks revealed AOA ecotype-specific modularization and niche partitioning of different AOA sublineages. Interestingly, the recurring co-occurrence of SCM1-like II sublineages with Nitrospinae OTUs formed nitrifiers assemblage in the RNA subnetworks suggested an interaction via nitrite exchange. The 2018 Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami severely damaged the coast of Palu City, Indonesia. The city did not have adequate mitigation system for a tsunami. A tsunami inundation map is required. This study based on modelling four scenarios of possible earthquake-induced tsunami. The earthquakes were identified based on data from PUSGEN. The generated tsunami wave is simulated using Delft3D and Delft Dashboard. The wave propagation is modeled using nesting method. This method couples different grid sizes. Nesting process helps to ensure the model efficiency and accuracy. The results provide the maximum inundation map along the Palu City Coast. These results can be used by decision maker to develop the coastal zone management of Palu City. Furthermore, they can be utilized to propose a disaster risk management plan.

Compared with those provided by polar-orbiting satellites/sensors (e.g., Landsat/MODIS), new-generation geostationary satellites, such as Himawari-8 and Geostationary Operational environmental Satellite-R series (GOES-R), offer temporally continuous and much more frequent observations of the land surface over the course of the diurnal cycle. In this study, Himawari-8 land surface temperature (LST) data and GLASS leaf area index (LAI) were assimilated into a coupled two-source surface energy balance–vegetation dynamics model (TSEB-VDM) via the variational data assimilation (VDA) method to retrieve the regional sensible heat flux ( H ), latent heat flux (LE), and gross primary productivity (GPP) (hereafter referred to as the VDA Himawari-8 scheme). Regional H , LE, and GPP values were estimated across the Heihe River Basin (HRB) in northwestern China, with a spatial resolution of 0.02° × 0.02°. Moreover, LST data from the MODIS, which is an instrument onboard polar-orbiting satellites (i.e., Terra and Aqua), were assimilated into the TSEB-VDM model (hereafter referred to as the VDA MODIS scheme) for comparison with the VDA Himawari-8 scheme. Four unknown parameters of the TSEB-VDM model, i.e., the neutral bulk heat transfer coefficient ( C HN ), the evaporative fractions of the soil and canopy (EF S and EF C , respectively), and the specific leaf area, were optimized via the VDA approach. The estimated H and LE values were validated against ground measurements from the large-aperture scintillator, and the GPP estimates were validated against eddy covariance data at three sites (Arou, Daman, and Sidaoqiao) in the HRB. The results indicated that the assimilation of geostationary satellite-based LST data significantly improved the performance of the VDA model. The three-site-average root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the H , LE, and GPP estimates from the VDA MODIS scheme were 45.27 W m −2 , 83.77 W m −2 , and 3.30 g C m −2 d −1 , respectively.
