Paleo-hydrology is an important study which simulates the historical hydrology at the lack of observed period, calibrated at the present period and predicted the future hydrological condition. The study of paleo-hydrology is to obtain the historical evidence for the present hydrology and improve the accuracy of the statistical analysis and the prediction modeling assessment. Paleo-inundation assessment is the study of historical inundation under flood events which occurred prior to direct measurement of hydrologic parameters using modern methods. The ultimate objectives of this study were to estimate paleo-inundation under extreme floods using historical literature and incomplete data records. This paper focused on an application of estimating historical inundation conditions under paleo-floods using modern technologies at the river basin scale.

为选取基于水文循环估算蒸散发方法提供依据,首先对常用水文模型中蒸散发估算方法进行回顾,根据其物理机理的强弱性,将水文模型中蒸散估算方法分为整体折算法和分类汇总法。当前水文模型中整体折算法占较大比重,它们之间的差异有两点:一是潜在蒸散发估算方法不同;二是土壤干燥度折算函数不同;研究表明:由于水文模型存在不确定性及Penman-Monteith方法具有较高资料要求,致使模拟中使用该方法与使用其它简化经验公式相似或更差的水文循环模拟效果。所以对于不同水文模型,如何选取与之复杂程度相兼容的潜在蒸散发估算方程和土壤干燥度折算函数来降低模型的不确定性需进一步讨论。在此基础上,预估基于水文循环估算蒸散发方法朝着复杂机理化和简单实用化两个方向发展。

Background: Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) addresses the challenge of meeting the growing demand for food, fibre and fuel, despite the changing climate and fewer opportunities for agricultural expansion on additional lands. CSA focuses on contributing to economic development, poverty reduction and food security;maintaining and enhancing the productivity and resilience of natural and agricultural ecosystem functions, thus building natural capital;and reducing trade-offs involved in meeting these goals. Current gaps in knowledge, work within CSA, and agendas for interdisciplinary research and science-based actions identified at the 2013 Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture (Davis, CA, USA) are described here within three themes: (1) farm and food systems, (2) landscape and regional issues and (3) institutional and policy aspects. The first two themes comprise crop physiology and genetics, mitigation and adaptation for livestock and agriculture, barriers to adoption of CSA practices, climate risk management and energy and biofuels (theme 1);and modelling adaptation and uncertainty, achieving multifunctionality, food and fishery systems, forest biodiversity and ecosystem services, rural migration from climate change and metrics (theme 2). Theme 3 comprises designing research that bridges disciplines, integrating stakeholder input to directly link science, action and governance. Outcomes: In addition to interdisciplinary research among these themes, imperatives include developing (1) models that include adaptation and transformation at either the farm or landscape level;(2) capacity approaches to examine multifunctional solutions for agronomic, ecological and socioeconomic challenges;(3) scenarios that are validated by direct evidence and metrics to support behaviours that foster resilience and natural capital;(4) reductions in the risk that can present formidable barriers for farmers during adoption of new technology and practices;and (5) an understan

County-level, Order 2 soil surveys have been used for decades to illustrate the spatial distribution of soils and communicate the utility and limitations of soil series. For the vast majority of these soil surveys, however, there is a distinct lack of resolution of soil series and associated data for urban or highly developed areas of the United States. Yet, with unprecedented vacancy and demolitions in major U.S. cities, the availability of large tracts of open and relatively inexpensive urban land suggests that there are many prospects for using these soils for something other than redevelopment. Therefore, current public interests center on how urban soils may be used to provide a myriad of ecosystem services. Due to the different emphasis, data needs are different than for past soil surveys and we therefore suggest an approach and protocol that was employed in Cleveland, OH in 2010. This work is centered on the possibility of using vacant land mass to infiltrate and otherwise absorb excess stormwater runoff quantity as a sustainable and putatively cost-effective way of managing combined sewer overflows (CSO). We examined a sample set of 56 vacant lots and 14 city parks or cemeteries located in the drainage areas of relatively small-volume, high frequency CSOs. This paper details the survey approach rationale, methods, and level of effort required and presents a case study. Overall, this work is submitted as a proposal to the soil survey community for a soil survey protocol aimed at servicing emergent environmental management data needs in urban core areas of the United States.

Contamination and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metal in the Sediment of Turag River, Bangladesh: An Index Analysis Approach

Encroachment, disposal of untreated domestic and industrial wastewater and dumping of solid wastes have degraded the overall quality of the river Turag, which is located in Dhaka—the Capital City of Bangladesh. The present study investigated the extent of pollution of sediments of this river and analyzed the regional variability for the concentrations of Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd—all of concern because of their potential toxicity, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. As per US EPA sediment quality guideline, metal concentrations ranged between Cd: 0.00 - 0.80, Cr: 32.00 - 75.50, Cu: 46.30 - 60.00, Pb: 28.30 - 36.40, and Zn: 94.60 - 190.10 mg/kg in the Turag river sediments. Cr, Cu, Zn belongs to moderately to highly polluted, Pb and Cd belongs to not polluted for Turag river. The heavy metals contamination in the sediments were also evaluated by applying Index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI) etc. Toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test (US EPA 1311) for sediment samples have been performed also for metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) to determine the readily toxicity level of heavy metals. Sieve analysis of sediment performed in this study to determine the physical characteristic of sediment samples. The metal concentrations are well below the regulated level as per US EPA. This index can be complemented with the contamination index, which allows more site-specific and accurate information on contaminant levels. If the aim of work on contamination evaluation is to assess the overall contamination of a study area, the indices are highly appropriate.

This study was aimed to investigate the remediation of anthracene contaminated soil using ultrasonic soil washing treatment. The impacts of different factors on the remediation efficiency were examined through an orthogonal experimental design approach. Four variables including initial anthracene concentration in soil, sonication time, pH of washing solution and washing flow rate were examined. A series of laboratory experiments were then conducted using an ultrasonic setup operated at a frequency of 20 KHz. The results indicated that the ultrasonic soil washing treatment was effective on anthracene removal from soil. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) illustrated that initial anthracene concentration, sonication time and soil washing flow rate had significant effect (P ≤ 0.05) on anthracene removal. It was also found that increasing sonication time and soil washing flow rate could improve the anthracene removal rate.
