This paper aims to discuss how the shaping of a city, Juiz de Fora, in Brazil, has resulted from the power of location of some social agents and from their disputes on the production of space. First, it introduces the concept of social production of space, emphasizing the role of social agents in urban processes. Then, it presents specific aspects of the history of Juiz de Fora＂ its origins and how social agents and forces have played a significant role in shaping the built environment of the city--specially represented by main streets of the city. The paper studies how the social agents, with their different visions and goals, have influenced the process of formation and development of the city. This demonstrates the complexity of the existing relationships between the built environment and the social context that is specific to the city. Different urban forces fight for city spaces, construct and modify its territory so that their needs are fulfilled. Their strength, their experiences and efforts, and their ideas of a city are inscribed in urban landscapes; in similar ways, these are revealed by the city paths we follow here.

Before that he was director of Barcelona's MACBA and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies. In 1997 he curated the exhibition Marcel Broodthaers Cinéma. CHRISTOPHE CHERIX is the Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints at the Museum of Modern Art. His publications include the catalogues accompanying the exhibitions Yoko Ono: One Woman Show 1960–1971 (with Klaus Biesenbach 2015) and In & Out of Amsterdam: Travels in Conceptual Art 1960–1976 (2009) and also the catalogues raisonnés of prints by Henri Michaux (with Rainer Michael Mason) and Robert Morris. RACHEL HAIDU is Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History and Director of the Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. She is the author of The Absence of Work: Marcel Broodthaers 1964–1976 (MIT 2010) and numerous essays on artists such as Chantal Akerman James Coleman Sharon Hayes Thomas Hirschhorn Sol LeWitt Yvonne Rainer and Gerhard Richter. TREVOR STARK is a PhD candidate in the History of Art and Architecture department at Harvard University. He is currently finishing his dissertation entitled “Total Expansion of the Letter: Cubism Dada Mallarmé” which is a genealogy of language and autonomy in avant-garde art rooted in the poetics of Mallarmé. He is a 2014–16 predoctoral fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Lauder Research Center for Modern Art.

On the occasion of Marcel Broodthaers's first retrospective in New York at the Museum of Modern art and forty years after his death in 1976, October presents a roundtable discussion on the Belgian artist's career and legacy. Exhibition curators Christophe Cherix and Manuel Borja-Villel join Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Rachel Haidu, Rosalind Krauss, and Trevor Stark for a conversation on Broodthaers's work, his artistic development, and his reception. Topics include the indeterminacy between language and visuality;the status of film in his work;his meditations on the commodity, the art market, and the historical role of cultural institutions;his ambivalent relationship with Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art;and national identity and decolonization.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. The Smithsonian Institution has acquired his archives. He is participating in Documenta 13. Felicity D. Scott is director of the program in Critical Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture (CCCP) at the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation Columbia University. She is the author of Architecture or Techno-Utopia: Politics After Modernism (MIT Press 2007) and Living Archive 7: Ant Farm (ACTAR 2008). She recently completed the manuscript for a book titled “Cartographies of Drift: Bernard Rudofsky's Encounters with Modernity.” Mark Wasiuta teaches at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation where he is also Director of Exhibitions and Director of Global Experiments in Art and Architecture. His research is focused on the turn to theories of environment and environmental design in postwar architecture and he is currently working on a history of Los Angeles air its pollution and other contaminants.

The article presents an interview with video artist and art theoretician Paul Ryan. He chronicles the events that led to his working with artist Marshall McLuhan at Fordham University during the 1960s. He discusses his efforts to get the New York State Council on the arts to increase grant funding for video as an art form in the 1970s. He also comments on his work within the cybernetic art movement.

Toward a Research Practice: Frederick Kiesler's Design-Correlation Laboratory

作者： Phillips, Stephen Stephen Phillips AIA is an architect historian and theorist. He recently received his Ph.D. from Princeton University School of Architecture in the History and Theory program and is currently a Residential Postdoctoral Fellow at the Getty Research Institute and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He is on leave from his position as Assistant Professor of Design at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo to complete his manuscript on Frederick Kiesler's research practice.

The article focuses on Austrian-American architect Frederick Kiesler who formed one of the first scientifically-based design research laboratories in a school of architecture in the U.S. His laboratory, the Laboratory of Design Correlation, was created during the Great Depression of the 1930s and was aimed at the systematic study of pure form and its application to architecture and industry. Kiesler took pains to conduct a critical study of everyday life and habits to design structures that upheld the relationship between a human being and the environment. Kiesler developed the concept of biotechnique, a formal methodology that applied the elements of crystal, sphere, cone, plane, strip, rod and spiral as the foundation of all forms of industrial and building design.

Imagination as appropriation: Student riots and the (re)claiming of public space

Analyzing the spatial genealogy of the student riots in May 1960 in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, this article investigates the relation between space and identity politics. Besides the social practices it contains, the "publicness" of space is also marked by the meanings and values attributed to the space by various social actors. The political participation of the social groups in public sphere becomes possible through spatial appropriation, which does not only mean the practical occupation of space but also the appropriation of the image of the (public) space. In the context of Ankara, the student riots transform Kizilay Square, which had been the prestigious center of a wealthy neighborhood, into a site of contesting spatial imageries and social identities. ©2003 Sage Publications.
