This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. The contribution of this article is a complete overview of the principal research directions in rough set theory and its applications in China. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Recent advances in microarray technology allow scientists to measure expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously in human tissue samples. This technology has been increasingly used in cancer research because of its potential for classification of the tissue samples based only on gene expression levels. A major problem in these microarray data is that the number of genes greatly exceeds the number of tissue samples. Moreover, these data have a noisy nature. It has been shown from literature review that selecting a small subset of informative genes can lead to an improved classification accuracy. Thus, this paper aims to select a small subset of informative genes that is most relevant for the cancer classification. To achieve this aim, an approach using two hybrid methods has been proposed. This approach is assessed on two well-known microarray data. The experimental results have shown that the gene subsets are very small in size and yield better classification accuracy as compared with other previous works as well as four methods experimented in this work. In addition, a list of informative genes in the best subsets is also presented for biological usage.

Open source software serve as key components of critical infrastructures in the social life. We focus on the quality problems of open source software developed under open source project. In case of considering the effect of the debugging process on an entire system in the development of a method of reliability assessment for open source project, it is necessary to grasp the deeply-intertwined factors, such as programming path, size of each component, skill of fault reporters, and so on.

Remote talkers can communicate smoothly via their embodied avatars, which represent their interactive behaviors in the same virtual space. In order to enable virtual face-to-face communication, we have developed an embodied avatar-mediated communication system by using a human avatar called "VirtualActor" within the same communication space. The effectiveness of the system has been confirmed by communication experiments. We have already proposed the concept of a virtual communication avatar system in which remote talkers under the restricted conditions can operate their own avatar based on their hand motion, and have developed the prototype of this system using a glove sensor. In this study, communication systems using three pointing devices - a wireless mouse, trackball, and 3D mouse - are developed for primitive interaction using conscious hand motion input in a general PC environment. Instead of a simple trackball, a 3D trackball, which has one handle ball involving yaw rotation as well as pitch and roll rotation, is developed in order to manipulate the avatar's head motion in a more intuitive manner. A communication experiment in which the 3D trackball, wireless mouse, trackball, and 3D mouse are compared is conducted for 15 pairs of talkers (30 in all);a sensory evaluation and analysis of embodied avatar manipulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the planned Japanese space gravitational wave antenna, aiming to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically and cosmologically significant sources mainly between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz and thus to open a new window for gravitational wave astronomy and for the universe. DECIGO will consist of three drag-free spacecraft, 1000 km apart from each other, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot interferometer. We plan to launch DECIGO in middle of 2020s, after sequence of two precursor satellite missions, DECIGO pathfinder and Pre-DECIGO, for technology demonstration required to realize DECIGO and hopefully for detection of gravitational waves from our galaxy or nearby galaxies. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

On the designing of a pseudo-random number generator from a sequence generated by the logistic map, period and link length of the sequence are important for good randomness. In this paper, we focus loops and links of sequences generated by the logistic map over integers. Since their periods and link lengths of them depend on an available bit. We consider the relation between the available bit and expected values of them.

We are developing a new real-time control system for customizing auditory stimulus (the binaural beat sound) by judging user alpha waves to entrain a userpsilas feeling in the most relaxed way. Since brainwave activity provides the necessary predictive information for arousal states, we use an autoregressive forecasting model to estimate the frequency response series of the alpha frequency bands and the inverted-U concept to determine the userpsilas arousal state. A fuzzy logic controller is also employed to regulate the binaural beat control signal on a forecasting error signal. Our system allows comfortable user self-relaxation. The results of experiments confirm the constructed systempsilas effectiveness and necessity.

We are investigating the logistic map over integers with finite precisions and sequences out-putted by the iterative mapping. In our proposed simple pseudo-random number generator with the logistic map over integers, we implicitly assumed that 0 and 1 occurrence frequencies per bit of outputs by the map are nearly equal. By some numerical experiments, we got the conjecture that occurrence rates per bit are nearly equal for many bits of 2n-bit values in the intermediate step of the map by one iteration and many iterations.

In this paper, we examine the influence of overconfidence in parameter specification on the performance of a Bayesian network model in the context of Hepar II, a sizeable Bayesian network model for diagnosis of liver disorders. We enter noise in the parameters in such a way that the resulting distributions become biased toward extreme probabilities. We believe that this offers a systematic way of modeling expert overconfidence in probability estimates. It appears that the diagnostic accuracy of Hepar II is less sensitive to overconfidence in probabilities than it is to underconfidence and to random noise, especially when noise is very large.

In this study, audiovisual integration for only attending visual component of bimodal audiovisual stimulus was investigated in humans using behavioral and electrophysiological measures. The aim was to explore human's information integration mechanism and give theoretic basic for traffic safety. Event-related potentials (ERPs) to auditory (A), visual (V) and bimodal audiovisual (AV) stimuli were recorded. Audiovisual integration is revealed in the difference between the ERPs to the bimodal AV stimulus and the sum of the ERPs to A and V stimulus. Results show that audiovisual integration was not found during early sensory processing phase (up to 200 ms post stimulus onset). Audiovisual integration was found firstly over central scalp around 300 ms. For only attending visual component of bimodal audiovisual information, simultaneously presented visual and auditory information were processed separately in early sensory processing phase, and in late phase audiovisual information was integrated.
