This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

In web applications, recommendation algorithms such like collaborative filtering techniques are widely accepted for web users. To apply the algorithms for physical world objects such as books, three problems arise. The first problem is, how to input user ratings for physical objects? The second problem is, how to measure user interests for physical objects? The third problem is, how to consider the relationship between physical objects and users based on their locations? In order to solve the problems, this paper proposes a physical objects recommender system for cell phone users, PORSCHE. As for the first problem, PORSCHE estimates the user ratings using user behaviors for physical objects. As for the second problem, PORSCHE changes the user ratings using both user behaviors and elapsed time. As for the third problem, PORSCHE adjusts the user ratings by continually monitoring the distance between physical objects and users. The result of experiments simulating a bookstore shows that PORSCHE detects user interests accurately and it also recommends proper books for the user.

Since an unexpected breakdown of network services could cause significant loss of business, each enterprise likes to provide the services constantly. Nowadays many small and medium enterprises possesses more than one network server. In many cases, there is nobody (or only one person) to manage the servers in these enterprises. In order to provide the network services constantly with low cost, we present a simplified cluster structure which is called the simplified high availability (SHA). SHA is structured by some freeware, and employs remote file systems synchronization program (rsync) to substitute a shared storage, such as a disk array. Hence it reduces the hardware cost. This function has been further applied to remote data backup successfully in this structure. During data backup, the transported data will be encrypted by secret shell (SSH). Therefore, the information in SHA can get better protection. Heartbeat performs breakdown server detection. SHA adopts Webmin, which is a web-based tool and has a graphical user interface (GUI), for the system administration. Thus the maintenance and configuration become easier, and the administrative cost is reduced. In this paper, the cost and availability of SHA are evaluated and compared whit SteelEye LifeKeeper and PolyServe Matrix HA. Our results illustrate that SHA has lower cost, and the availabilities of SHA, SteelEye LifeKeeper and PolyServe Matrix Server are comparable. Hence SHA could provide the high-availability services and reduce the total cost of ownership.

We propose and experiment a Social Networking Service (SNS) for local communities for tsunami disaster control. It is an easy-to-use GIS-based system with powerful GIS analysis capabilities. One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation.
