Since a sound field reproduction system based on wavefield synthesis usually needs a great number of channel signals, the amount of data transmitted should be reduced. This paper therefore proposes a spatial coding method that is based on the extraction of moving sound sources and reduces the amount of data transmitted from an amount proportional to the number of channels to an amount proportional to the number of sound sources. A coding experiment was performed for a reverberant sound field which was simulated with image method. The effect of the proposed method on the perceptual quality was evaluated by the subjective assessment. © 2005 IEEE.

It is often observed that the reverberation time in a room with unevenly-distributed sound absorbers, such as a room having an absorptive floor and/or ceiling, is often longer in middle- and high-frequency range than the values obtained using Eyring's formula, since the assumption of diffuse sound field is not satisfied. In this study, this phenomenon was investigated through scale model experiment and three-dimensional wave-based numerical analysis. Reverberation time in a room having absorptive floor and/or ceiling was confirmed to be longer in the middle- and high-frequency range, and the arrangement of absorbers were also confirmed to affect the frequency characteristic of the reverberation time. The increase of reverberation time is caused by slow decay of axial and tangential modes in the horizontal direction. The frequency characteristic of reverberation time depends on the height of the room. The reverberation time is longer in high-frequency range (where the wavelength is sufficiently shorter compared to the height of the ceiling) than in low-frequency range when frequency characteristics of the absorption coefficients of the absorbers are flat. As a means to improve such an uneven reverberation time property in a room with highly absorptive floor/ceiling, the placement of diffusers in the vertical direction and inward-inclining walls (when in a room with highly absorptive floor) has been found to be effective.

The fracture property of amorphous metal was studied by a large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The Finnis-Sinclair potential for α-iron was used as an inter-atomic potential. At first, we made a model amorphous metal by melting-rapid quenching simulation. And then a crystal growth simulation in the amorphous was performed. We used circular model, and the cracktip is assumed to be at the center. In order to analyze the crack growth characteristics in an infinite domain, the linear elastic solution of Mode I crack was used as a boundary condition. The periodic boundary condition was used to the thickness direction. The crack opens in similar fashion and it has smooth surfaces during the amorphous state. As it deformed, some clusters of bcc-crystal nucleate around the cracktip and they grow rapidly. The distribution of deformation zones and deformation mechanism are significantly altered. The grains are not deformed while they are relatively small. The emission of dislocations from the cracktip is observed, after the crystal phase covered the crack-tip surfaces. The grain size appeared small in the vicinity of the crack-tip, and becomes gradually large as it separates form the crack-tip.

A fast algorithm based on depth discontinuity and occlusion analysis is presented for ray-space interpolation. Feature points at depth discontinuity regions in the top and bottom line of sparse epipolar plane image (EPI) is first extracted, and their directions are determined by multiple epipolar matching method. Each of the feature points grows in the nearby epipolar lines until the direction of the grown feature point departures from the direction of the initial point, which means that occlusion occurs or the feature point is in fact a noise. Finally, directional interpolation is implemented within the regions segmented by the feature points. Experimental results show that the new method runs much faster than the pixel matching based and block matching based interpolation methods, additionally, the quality of interpolated EPIs and the rendered arbitrary viewpoint images obtained by the new method is also much better than that of the other two methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Ray-space representation is the main technology to realize free viewpoint video system with complicated scenes. Ray-space interpolation is one of key problems to be solved. A new fast ray-space interpolation method that can preserve depth discontinuity is proposed in this paper. Discontinuity features of ray-space data are first extracted by using adaptive threshold, then, a cross check operation is carried out between neighboring epipolar lines to refine the extracted feature points. After that, ray directions of feature points are determined, and ray-space interpolation is implemented in the regions segmented by feature points. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves much higher PSNR than the pixel matching based interpolation method and the block matching based interpolation method, and the quality of rendered intermediate viewpoint images is also improved greatly. In addition, the proposed interpolation method requires low computational cost and is suitable for hardware implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The stringent requirements on size and power consumption constrain the conventional hearing aid devices from providing the patients an economic and user friendly solution, specifically for better noise cancellation. With the advancements in technologies such as integrated circuits design, wireless communications and digital signal processing techniques, the wireless hearing aids having multi-microphones, analog, digital and mixed signals and radio frequency signals processing circuits, DSP and programmable units seem to be promising to provide enhanced performance. The focus of this paper is about the system simulation of a typical wireless hearing aid using Agilent Advanced Design System™. The behavioral modeling features are exploited to enable the whole system simulations including electro-acoustic transducers. A few system level simulation results are included. © 2005 IEEE.

Software testing is a major approach to software quality assurance, but it is relatively neglected in universities' computing curricula. For students majoring in computer science or software engineering, several basic testing methods need to be taught. These testing methods generate test cases based on either specifications or program code. When introducing the testing methods based on program code, it is not easy to let the students experience automated test case generation due to the lack of supporting tools and limited teaching hours. In this paper we report our experience in teaching this topic with limited resources. The evaluation result indicates that our teaching method is effective and can also be adopted in other computer science/software engineering subjects where similar constraints exist.

This study is to explore a method of learning support in e-Learning environment including some learning supporters. Especially we develop a learning support method of distance teaching assistants on the Web for problem solving based group learning. We need to explore the learning models of next generation in knowledge society. Simultaneously, challenge to new pedagogy in learning and education with e-Learning environment is desired. From a viewpoint of learning support, learners can be concerned with learning supporters such as other teachers, domain experts and learners who have already studied the subject matter as well as a teacher at the face-to-face lesson in the learning environment. So, the learning support model needs to include some tools which have some functions of the learning supports. In this paper, we extract learning support patterns from an analysis of dialogue patterns between learners and distance teaching assistants. Moreover, we describe the outline of a bulletin board tool based on the learning support patterns.

Ray-space representation is the main technology to realize Free Viewpoint Video (FVV) system with complicated scene. Ray-space data consists of various lines with different direction. Ray-space interpolation and compression are two key techniques to be solved. In this paper, correlations between multiple epipolar lines in the Ray-space data is analyzed, and a new algorithm of Ray- Space interpolation with multiepipolar lines matching is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves higher PSNR than the pixel-based matching interpolation method and the block-based matching interpolation method in interpolating the ray-space data and rendering arbitrary viewpoint image.
