Low-cost real-time environmental noise monitoring system design and implementation

Environmental noise has a negative impact on human health and well-being. Real-time noise monitoring for effective noise control and management helps to identify noise sources and areas with high noise pollution, and potential mitigation strategies in urban planning. This paper reports work with a pilot scale system that can continuously collect noise data to assess noise levels accurately for real-time monitoring of environmental noise, focusing on hardware and software aspects and potential applications. The system permits the transfer of measurement data to the central server computer, with storage and display there, with the code written using Python. This system includes Web integration, with open source technologies to provide data access, and is based on Wi-Fi communication and a Control Card with Wi-Fi technology. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Extreme weather conditions, particularly heat waves and cold waves pose a threat to society by impacting habitability, health, and social interactions. In recent decades, the effects of heat stress on public health have been of great concern worldwide. As a result, human biometeorological indices are widely used to assess the links between the outdoor environment and human well-being. This study examines the spatiotemporal modelling of heat and cold indices over 23 years in Northeast Syria. Two indices are considered to evaluate the degree of heat and cold stress in the outdoor environment: the Heat Index (HI) and thermo-hygrometric index (THI). Daily meteorological data, encompassing air temperature and dew point temperature, were acquired from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5-Land reanalysis between 2000 and 2022, and with a global resolution of 0.1°. This data set is accessible and processed through Google Earth Engine (GEE). The spatial distribution of these indices reveals significant spatiotemporal variability. The northern areas of southeast and western Syria show increased vulnerability to heat according to the HI index, while the southernmost part of northeast Syria shows pronounced vulnerability to cold according to the THI index. This suggests that a significant proportion of the population living in these areas is likely to be more vulnerable to specific health problems. This situation could potentially trigger socio-economic ramifications related to cold waves in northeast Syria and to heat waves in the west and south. Therefore, the indices used play a crucial role in assessing heat levels in the environment and protecting individuals against heat-related illnesses. © 2024 45th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, ACRS 2024. On February 6th, 2023, Türkiye experienced the devastating impact of two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.5 and 7.8 on the Richter scale, resulting in widespread chaos and tragedy. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between earthquakes and remotely sensed atmospheric parameters obtained by the Sentinel 5P TROPOMI instrument. This comprehensive analysis compared the monthly measurements from February to June of certain air pollutants such as the UV Aerosol Index, SO2, NO2, O3, CO, HCHO, and CH4 in 2023 and the average monthly measurements of the previous year. The Sentinel 5P satellite data was obtained through the Google Earth Engine platform and analyzed by GIS software. The results indicate that the earthquake triggered significant aerosol emissions into the atmosphere;this increase is attributed to the collapse of numerous buildings caused by the earthquake and the subsequent rubble removal efforts, which lasted several months. In addition, CO, SO2, and NO2 levels decreased, especially in February and March, which may be linked to a downturn in human and industrial activities in the region. However, the levels of CH4 have significantly increased in the entire earthquake area since February. While earthquakes can lead to the release of methane, the substantial mortality rate may also play a key role in contributing to this rise. Moreover, the air and soil temperatures of the ERA5-Land data from the Copernicus Data Store were utilized to assess the variations in monthly temperatures throughout the last years to check whether there is any potential relationship between the increasing air quality levels and temperature. © 2024 45th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, ACRS 2024. Natural disasters such as wildfires are continuous hazards that threaten forests all around the world. Wildfires cause massive environmental and economic devastation and they are considered a major risk in several parts of the world. Between 1990 and 2020 the world has lost 178 million hectares of its forest, and because of the current climate change there are expectations for wildfires to increase in frequency, extent, and severity. Wildfires have become an increasingly serious concern on a global scale, causing environmental and economic damage. The complexity of the wildfires can make a negative impact on the decision-making process, while the decision-makers are under the pressure of conditions that are limited in time, dynamic, uncertain, and contradictory. A decision support system (DSS) is an interactive computer-based information system developed to assist decision-makers. It integrates the theory of decision-making with interactive computer systems. GIS-based DSSs have been used to increase the efficiency of fire control processes such as planning, managing, and decision-making. Some countries have their own wildfire systems. In Turkey, the forests represent about 29% of the total area, the average burned area is more than 10 thousand hectares per year while the average of wildfire incidents is about 2200 incidents annually. Several tools and systems have been developed recently, they have varied between early warning systems and decision support systems or even only fire monitoring and detection tools and systems. However, most of these tools and systems were developed to do one specific task. There is an urgent need to develop an integrated GIS-based DSS system to meet the national requirements of wildfire fighting. In this study, the national capabilities and requirements of Turkey for better wildfire fighting and prevention are reviewed. Additionally, the available tools and systems for Turkey are reviewed and compared with the other national systems. ©

The Meninting diversion-spillway tunnel is a part of the Meninting dam project located in West Lombok District. The construction commenced in 2017;then, a series of severe Lombok earthquakes halted the construction of the tunnel for a while in 2018, where some landslides occurred around the site. This possibly caused rock masses around the tunnel to be sheared off during the earthquake events. Updated probability seismic hazard analysis shows increased seismic parameters, including peak ground, short spectrum and long spectrum accelerations, which then resulted in increased stresses around the tunnel. Thus, the stability of the tunnel decreased in terms of its factors of safety. Although, the overall factor of safety was about 2.5, the tunnel was still stable in current conditions;the tunnel certainly requires more stability improvements to face possible similar severe earthquakes in future. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Turkey has been experiencing a rapid urbanization process since the 1950s. In the 1950s, 75% of the population lived in the city and district centers and this rate has reached 92%. Regional disparities in provided public services in urban and rural areas across the country promoted domestic migration from agricultural to industrial cities with better living conditions. As a result of the increase in received migration, the urban population exploded and the immigrant population had problems in adaptation to the urban lifestyle due to the precipitous differences in the socio-economic structure of the urban and rural. The exclusion of the immigrant population by the urbanites in many ways, in other words, their inability to integrate with the urban population caused them to seek solidarity among themselves and they established organizations. This organization, which is still active today, is "fellow countrymen associations", which are nongovernmental organizations. In this study, the distribution of citizen associations operating in the province of Bursa by districts and the tendency of those from which provinces to establish associations in which districts and their relation with the socio-economic development of the districts were revealed. For this purpose, the development of Fellow Countrymen Associations as a civil society organization was firstly examined in Turkey. Secondly, the distribution of nongovernmental organizations in Bursa province according to their fields of activity in the districts was determined and an answer was introduced for exploring the diversity of their activity fields based on the socio-economic development indicators. Finally, the distribution of the fellow countrymen associations has been examined in Bursa specifically and the relations with the development of the districts are tried to be revealed by the use of geo-information technologies. The main objective of this study is to create a land cover/land use (LC/LU) map of a part in the Izmir metropolitan city in Turkey, based on an enhanced Urban Atlas nomenclature, using geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) techniques. For this purpose, high-resolution SPOT 7 images from different seasons with a 1.5 m spatial resolution were used as the main earth observation (EO) data, and then rule-based object-oriented classification methods were applied to create the LC/LU map. Open-source geospatial data such as Open Street Map (OSM) and Wikimapia were also integrated into the classification to better identify some LC/LU classes such as Discontinuous Medium Density Urban Fabric, Fast Transit Roads and Associated Land, Airport as well as increase the total accuracy of the classification. In total, 23 LC/LU classes are determined in the study area with different accuracy values. An area-based accuracy assessment for random areas was performed to determine the classification accuracy of the obtained LC/LU map. This study aims to investigate the changes in landscape metrics with varying spatial resolution from Sentinel-2 (10 m), SPOT 7 (1.5 m), Pleaides (0.5 m), and Worldview-4 (0.3 m) images. We implemented Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) techniques to all images to identify 21 land use and land cover (LULC) classes, which were then used to calculate several landscape metrics. We performed the Welch hypothesis testing on the class-level landscape metrics and applied Standardized Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with the correlation matrix to reveal the multivariate pattern of landscape metrics. Our results showed that 10 m and even the 1.5 m spatial resolutions cannot guarantee the identification of all LULC classes, and class areas change with varying spatial resolution (sometimes with 200% differences). Sentinel-2 images have some limitations, specifically from the landscape ecological planning perspective; on the other hand, Pleaides and Worldview-4 seem good alternatives to understand habitats’ viability and landscape isolation/connectivity.

This review synthesises advancements in natural convection within trapezoidal cavities using mono- and hybrid nanofluids, emphasising their geometric advantages for thermal management. Trapezoidal cavities promote asymmetric flow patterns that enhance heat transfer compared to conventional geometries, as demonstrated in applications like solar absorbers and electronic cooling. Through analysis of 50+ previous studies, the review identifies key trends: Hybrid nanofluids like Cu-Al₂O₃/water consistently outperform mono nanofluids in Nusselt number improvement, with gains exceeding 20 %. Inclined walls mitigate stagnant flow zones, though exact reduction rates vary with aspect ratio and nanoparticle concentration. Magnetic fields and porous media further modulate thermal performance, but trade-offs emerge between conductivity enhancement and viscosity penalties. This review provides a framework to optimise trapezoidal cavities with nanofluids for industrial deployment. © 2025 The Author(s)

A forest fire is stated as an ecological disaster whether it is man-made or caused naturally. Izmir is one of the regions where forest fires are most intensified in Turkey. The study area located at Aegean region of Turkey suffered two forest fires in 2017;Menderes and Bayindir areas. This study presents the integration of remote sensing (Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 satellite images) and GIS data to map and evaluate the forest burned areas due to both forest fires. For this purpose, different indexes such as Burn Area Index (BAI), Mid Infrared Burn Index (MIRBI), Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and Normalized Burn Ratio Thermal (NBRT) Burn Index are applied besides different classification algorithms. The results showed that different vegetation types/zones are being affected. Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 data are integrated to the GIS established with fieldwork data to analyse and also validate the results. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data produced from ASTER satellite is also overlaid to the outcomes to emphasize the destructed forest areas.
