Do greenness and landscape indices for greenspace correlate with suicide ratio?

Previous studies have demonstrated the preventive effects of greenness and greenspace using three classes of exposure metrics (greenspace coverage, greenness, and landscape indices for greenspace) on suicide. Nevertheless, most studies were individually employed for each metric using a single-phase method, representing the short-term exposure. We hierarchically investigated the association between three classes of exposure metrics and suicide using long-term data from 2000 to 2018 in Taiwan. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to represent the greenness exposure, while mean patch area (area and edge), area-weighted mean fractal dimension index (shape), and proximity index (proximity) were opted to represent landscape indices for greenspace. Using the generalized additive mixed model, we revealed that the relative risk (95% confidence interval) of greenspace coverage, NDVI, mean patch area, area-weighted mean fractal dimension index, and proximity index was 0.998 (0.997, 0.999), 0.860 (0.811, 0.912), 0.999 (0.999, 0.999), 1.485 (1.056, 2.088), and 0.999 (0.999, 0.999), respectively. This indicates that long-term exposure to both greenspace coverage and greenness is associated with a reduced suicide ratio. Similarly, long-term exposure to greenspace that is greater in size, simpler in shape, and closer in proximity is associated with a decreased suicide risk. For formulating future afforestation policies, the layout and connectivity of greenspaces should be considered besides increasing green areas. This study not only demonstrated the significance of long-term exposure to greenspace for reducing the suicide ratio, but also illustrated a hierarchical approach to examine the effects of greenspace. © 2023

The rise in energy-efficient, sustainable building operations necessitates the development of advanced innovations that reduce heating and cooling demands while maintaining comfortable indoor thermal conditions. Phase change materials (PCMs) demonstrate significant potential as a stabilization mechanism through latent heat storage for managing residential indoor temperatures; however, their integration into systems requires further optimisation. This review examines PCM-assisted ventilation technologies—specifically ventilated façades, roofs, and windows—highlighting their energy performance, which ranges from 7.7 % to 32.8 %, and their capacity to reduce peak temperatures by 2.5 °C to 7.02 °C. These improvements are influenced by PCM thickness of 15–35 mm and melting temperatures of 15–37 °C. The combination of PCM-enhanced hybrid systems with natural or mechanical ventilation has shown greater operational effectiveness, particularly in hot climates and when integrated with adaptive control systems to achieve optimal performance. Despite their benefits, widespread adoption of PCM technologies is hindered by high material costs, hysteresis effects, and limited discharge cycle efficiency. Nevertheless, PCM-enhanced ventilation systems have proven capable of supporting sustainable, low-energy buildings. Continued research is needed to develop cost-effective design strategies, automated control mechanisms, and climate-responsive optimisations to fully realize their potential.

Heat exchangers are critical for thermal energy management efficiency in aerospace, automotive, food processing, and energy sector operations. This thorough study analyzes the thermal performance upgrades for different heat exchanger systems, particularly fins. Finned heat exchangers—including shell-and-tube, double-pipe, and compact types—enhance heat transfer through advanced geometries and manufacturing. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHXs) perform well in cross-flow and phase-change but face maintenance and cost challenges. Double-pipe heat exchangers (DPHEs) improve performance but often have higher pressure drops and limited real-world testing. Compact heat exchangers (CHE) are space-efficient and benefit from additive manufacturing but face fabrication complexity and scalability issues and need further optimization and material innovation. The review analyzes new methods that optimize heat transfer performance using modern fin shapes, including rectangle-shaped fins, triangles, trapezoids, pin fins, and wavy fins. According to test results, these alternative fin designs lead to enhanced heat transfer rates and maintainable pressure drop levels. Scientific research has validated wavy fins as heat transfer performers because they enhance the Nusselt number to 28 % above circular tubes. Using ten longitudinal and wavy fins demonstrated maximum performance capabilities by reaching an overall response value of 1.33 in DPHEs. Future academic research moves toward designing compound heat exchangers from different materials while investigating novel performance-enhancing alternatives for thermal management systems in multiple applications. The review is a key reference to bridge gaps between heat exchanger design and optimization methods.

The key objective of this study was to design, develop, and test a schema-less graph network Land Tenure Information System (LTIS) database prototype that is integrated with data mining and social network analysis techniques for the purpose of revealing hidden tenure information in the data related to conflict and post-conflict situations. Conventional LTISs are ineffective in conflict and post-conflict situations because they only describe recorded tenure information, and therefore these systems are not reflective of land practices taking place on the ground. In conflict and post-conflict situations, multiple sets of state held and privately held land tenure records may exist. The question then is how can LTISs be better designed to capture and describe tenure information in conflict and post-conflict situations. The study adapts a spiral software development model to develop a Talking Titler Network (TTN) database prototype. Simulated tenure data from two illustrative cases was entered and automatically mined and analysed within the database system. The results show that a schema-less graph network database integrated with data mining and social network analysis techniques can capture and describe complex land tenure information among and between people and tenure objects. In addition, the integrated techniques automatically extract, investigate, and visualise embedded tenure information emerging from these situations. The experimental test results provide important empirical observations to advance the TTN database design and development in order to assist in supporting land tenure dispute resolution for conflict and post-conflict situations. However, further field work needs to be carried out to validate the results.

Species’ traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes;dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly. © The Author(s) 2025.
