The use of nuclear power plants to produce electric energy is a safety-critical process where ultimate operational decisions still relies with the control room operators. Thus it is important to provide the best possible decision support through effective supervisory control interfaces. A human centered design approach, based on cognitive task analysis methods, was used to observe the operators training on the nuclear power plant simulator of the Human System Interface Laboratory (LABIHS). We noted deficiencies in graphic interface design, alarm system and in the integration between the computerized interfaces and the hardcopy (paper) procedures. A new prototype of the interface including graphics, alarms and digital procedures was designed as an alternative to the current hardcopy procedure manuals. The design improves upon the graphical layout of system information and provides better integration of procedures, automation, and alarm systems. The new design was validated by expert opinion and a performance comparison with the existing design.

Research has been done in order to propose solutions that enhance interactions among participants and improve activity coordination in the meeting cycle. Some of these are related to pre-meeting phase conduction. We argue that collaboration could be enhanced if we supplied relevant context information through awareness mechanisms. This paper aims at evaluating context elements in an asynchronous web-based pre-meeting application. As a result, a context framework is discussed in order to support awareness design in the meeting support applications domain.

One of the most important work group support issues is providing information about the context under which a group interacts. The goal of this paper is evaluating the influence of contextual information on the cooperation level in group interactions supported by groupware. A laboratory case study was set up and carried out with this purpose.

This study was aimed to evaluate the e-learning platform in a graduate school by using User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The data were collected from 65 respondents and analyzed using an excel data analysis tool. The results indicate that all six scales of the instrument are consistent except the novelty scale. Also, the calculated means of the scales are slightly positive as all values are greater than 0.8 compared to the UEQ benchmark. Although the respondents show a little positive impression with the platform, all scales means are below average category except efficiency scale which is above average as compared to the benchmark. This indicates that the platform needs more improvement in all aspects of user experience for it to be at least in a good category. The findings discussed in this paper are valuable for all academic stakeholders in various educational institutions which implement interactive e-learning systems as well as practitioners of user experience and developers of e-learning systems. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We describe size-varying cylindrical particles made from silicone elastomers that can serve as building blocks for robotic granular materials. The particle size variation, which is achieved by inflation, gives rise to changes in stiffness under compression. We design and fabricate inflatable particles that can become stiffer or softer during inflation, depending on key parameters of the particle geometry, such as the ratio of the fillet radius to the wall thickness, r/t. We also conduct numerical simulations of the inflatable particles and show that they only soften during inflation when localization of large strains occurs in the regime r/t → 0. This work introduces novel particle systems with tunable size and stiffness that can be implemented in numerous soft robotic applications. © 2025, CC BY.

This study presents an analysis concerning the use of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and identifying sources of resilience and brittleness in an emergency response exercise conducted as training for Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department's captains, Brazil. From the audiovisual record of the exercise performed by 35 young officers, it was noticed the partial activation of 13 SOPs relevant to the exercise. Not all steps under each SOP were activated or even used. Some possible reasons are the novelty related to the use of simulation as well as the exercise design. This bias in the SOPs use was somehow compensated by sources of resilience that contributed to the actions outcome. Positive and negative aspects of this relationship between standardization and resilience were observed and described, contributing to a better understanding of the activity analysis of these professionals. © 2016

This study evaluates an agent-based reinforcement learning framework for model-based testing (MBT). The framework's performance was assessed on three key metrics: effectiveness and efficiency in achieving model coverage objectives, the quantity and uniqueness of generated test cases, and code coverage. The results show improved metrics for the framework compared to traditional testers in model coverage evaluation and test case metrics. Specifically, the framework achieved higher effectiveness and efficiency, generating a higher average number of test cases with a substantial proportion of unique cases, indicating more diverse and thorough testing. Additionally, the framework, along with random and greedy testers, achieved over 70% coverage across branch, method, and line code metrics. The framework showed slightly higher values in method and line coverage compared to other testers. The evaluation highlights the use of agent-based reinforcement learning to support model-based testing in planning test case generation, exploring models using multiple strategies, and learning guided by testing metrics. Future work will focus on further refining the framework learning model, including error coverage evaluation, and testing its applicability across different software systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Heart rate monitoring is widely used as a general procedure to examine fetal health condition. Fetal heart rate can be used to identified possibilities of fetal anomaly and warn the obstetrician to provide immediate intervention before any further abnormalities. The purpose of this research is to compare fetal heart rate detection result using envelope extraction and Shannon energy envelope method. There are 115 fetal phonocardiography and maternal phonocardiography that is used in this research. The dataset was obtained from Hafez Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Science. Envelope extraction method can be used to detect fetal heart rate signal with 89.2% accuracy for all fetal phonocardiography signal while Shannon energy envelope method can be used to detect fetal heart rate signal with 88.3% accuracy for all fetal phonocardiography signal. © 2019 IEEE.

A growing number of virtual courses are being offered by Brazilian educational institutions, requiring the development of technological resources and research to assist in Distance Education (DE) teaching and learning processes. Analysis of students’ socio-affective profiles in Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) enables possibilities to develop methodologies and resources to better understand them. The Social Map (SM) and Affective Map (AM), both features of the Cooperative Learning Network (in Portuguese: ROODA), provide inferences and graphic presentations of students’ socio-affective profiles. This article aims to identify the possible recurrent socio-affective scenarios in a VLE utilizing Learning Analytics (LA). LA is defined as the measurement, collection, and analysis of data. The qualitative and quantitative research approach used in this work was carried out based on 10 case studies. The target audience was 219 students including undergraduate, graduate, teachers, and elderly people who participated in teaching activities at a university. Data collected from the SM and AM were extracted in order to identify the relationship between these two aspects. As a result, 38 socio-affective scenarios were created using LA to contribute to the analysis of the students’ learning profiles, allowing teachers to develop pedagogical strategies consistent with the needs of each individual. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Studies of critical success factors in the implementation of programs of software process improvement have been conducted on a large scale in recent decades. However, these studies only focus on the implementation and do not consider the factors that influence the continuity or abandonment of these programs after official appraisal. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the critical factors involved in the maintenance or abandonment of these programs. For this purpose, an exploratory survey was conducted, with the participation of consultants and appraisers of software process improvement reference models. The result was the proposal of a theoretical framework of critical success factors to maintain the use of processes of reference models, composed of the following categories: human factors, project factors, consultancy, organizational factors and technical factors involved in the process. © 2018 Universitat zu Koln.
