Due to increasing demand, container terminals face the challenges of increasing its service capacity and minimize the time of ships loading and unloading. The assignment of storage locations for reshuffled containers is a problem to the efficiency of container terminals operations, as a wrong assignment may result in several future reshuffles. This paper proposes a meta-heuristic based on the Clonal Selection Algorithm to minimize reshuffle when retrieving containers from a stack. The model competitiveness in accuracy and time are established by extensive numerical experiments comparing with an existing Integer program model. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising optimization tool for the container stacking problem. © 2011 IEEE.

This study was aimed to evaluate the e-learning platform in a graduate school by using User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The data were collected from 65 respondents and analyzed using an excel data analysis tool. The results indicate that all six scales of the instrument are consistent except the novelty scale. Also, the calculated means of the scales are slightly positive as all values are greater than 0.8 compared to the UEQ benchmark. Although the respondents show a little positive impression with the platform, all scales means are below average category except efficiency scale which is above average as compared to the benchmark. This indicates that the platform needs more improvement in all aspects of user experience for it to be at least in a good category. The findings discussed in this paper are valuable for all academic stakeholders in various educational institutions which implement interactive e-learning systems as well as practitioners of user experience and developers of e-learning systems. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Tuning the Size and Stiffness of Inflatable Particles

We describe size-varying cylindrical particles made from silicone elastomers that can serve as building blocks for robotic granular materials. The particle size variation, which is achieved by inflation, gives rise to changes in stiffness under compression. We design and fabricate inflatable particles that can become stiffer or softer during inflation, depending on key parameters of the particle geometry, such as the ratio of the fillet radius to the wall thickness, r/t. We also conduct numerical simulations of the inflatable particles and show that they only soften during inflation when localization of large strains occurs in the regime r/t → 0. This work introduces novel particle systems with tunable size and stiffness that can be implemented in numerous soft robotic applications. © 2025, CC BY.

This study presents an analysis concerning the use of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and identifying sources of resilience and brittleness in an emergency response exercise conducted as training for Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department's captains, Brazil. From the audiovisual record of the exercise performed by 35 young officers, it was noticed the partial activation of 13 SOPs relevant to the exercise. Not all steps under each SOP were activated or even used. Some possible reasons are the novelty related to the use of simulation as well as the exercise design. This bias in the SOPs use was somehow compensated by sources of resilience that contributed to the actions outcome. Positive and negative aspects of this relationship between standardization and resilience were observed and described, contributing to a better understanding of the activity analysis of these professionals. © 2016

It is proposed in this session that the interactivity necessary in ubiquitous learning can be enhanced by the virtual tutor who mediates between the learner and the e-Learning contents. Arousing students' intellectual curiosity and raising their motivation to learn are the two great goals for e-Learning contents developers. It is supposed that the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom can be maintained in e-Learning with the help of Virtual Tutor, which appears on the learning contents in a timely fashion to give learners advice, encouragement, reminders, and such. The session includes discussions to develop such a system making use of the most updated technology as well as demonstrations of such a system which has been experimented at Department of Media informatics. It is proved that the learning environment where human interactivity is essential can be reconstructed in terms of the proposed Virtual Tutor. This paper presentation includes demonstrations of QED as well as a discussion of the importance of interactivity in ubiquitous e-Learning. © 2008 IEEE.

Currently, the demand for the security of network assets in companies grows dramatically because of several factors, including the growth of the attack surface combined with the variety of connection standards and correlated to the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) related devices and services. This reality is also evident regarding nodes connected to military networks, especially Tactical Edge (TE) devices. Due to the wide variety of equipment connected to the networks (from small sensors to powerful radars) and their possible limitations in resources and transmission means, mainly caused by the terrain and operational conditions, these networks called the Internet of Battle Things (IoBT), also face important security challenges. In this context full of many intentional and unintentional security challenges, this work proposes using blockchain technology as a network access security solution within an in-depth defense concept at three levels: hardware, network, and application. Tests for attacks against the network layer resulted in high resistance rates without consuming significant resources. © 2024 IEEE.

Data generated across time may not be easily comparable in its original form thus potentially leading to results that may be perceived as unfair to some. We investigate quality assessment of scholarly researchers from their curricula vitae (CVs) for processes such as hiring, promotion, and grant funding. In previous work, we demonstrated that case-based reasoning (CBR) offers advantages as a transparent methodology to assess researcher quality. Its benefits include consistency, transparency, ability to adapt to specific purposes, and ability to provide explanation. The problem we now face is how to preprocess the data from the CVs to compare researchers whose scholarly production is achieved under different conditions, different points in time, and span different career trajectory lengths. We propose strategies to deal with these aspects of time during preprocessing of the data for case representation. We use 1,000 CVs from the Brazilian Lattes database to illustrate. Enhancing dynamic ensemble selection: combining self-generating prototypes and meta-classifier for data classification

In dynamic ensemble selection (DES) techniques, the competence level of each classifier is estimated from a pool of classifiers, and only the most competent ones are selected to classify a specific test sample and predict its class labels. A significant challenge in DES is efficiently estimating classifier competence for accurate prediction, especially when these techniques employ the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm to define the competence region of a test sample based on a validation set (known as the dynamic selection dataset or DSEL). This challenge is exacerbated when the DSEL does not accurately reflect the original data distribution or contains noisy data. Such conditions can reduce the precision of the system, induce unexpected behaviors, and compromise stability. To address these issues, this paper introduces the self-generating prototype ensemble selection (***) framework, which combines meta-learning with prototype selection. The proposed meta-classifier of *** supports multiple classification algorithms and utilizes meta-features from prototypes derived from the original training set, enhancing the selection of the best classifiers for a test sample. The method improves the efficiency of KNN in defining competence regions by generating a reduced and noise-free DSEL set that preserves the original data distribution. Furthermore, the *** framework facilitates tailored optimization for specific classification challenges through the use of hyperparameters that control prototype selection and the meta-classifier operation mode to select the most appropriate classification algorithm for dynamic selection. Empirical evaluations of twenty-four classification problems have demonstrated that *** outperforms state-of-the-art DES methods as well as traditional single-model and ensemble methods in terms of accuracy, confirming its effectiveness across a wide range of classification contexts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Ver

Organizations have been relying on collaboration for productivity improvement and knowledge sharing. The first step to foster collaboration in organizations is to make it explicit. With this aim, the Collaboration Maturity Model (CollabMM) was proposed and evaluated. The lessons learned during model applications in previous work pointed out the need to review both the model and its evaluation instruments. A literature review also showed some improvement opportunities. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop a roadmap to highlight the main opportunities of evolution in CollabMM. These opportunities will compose our research agenda in this topic and guide future work. © 2011 IEEE.

This article summarizes existing ethical frameworks for healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) and ambient sensing technology, such as computer vision, and examines their application to improve patient outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU). Integrating ethical considerations such as privacy, fairness, and autonomy into the lifecycle of an AI tool is necessary to fully harvest AI's potential to deliver safe, high-quality, personalized, and low-cost healthcare services that provide positive experiences for patients, families, and clinicians while improving health outcomes. Drawing from agile science, the article proposes a practical roadmap for clinician and researcher use to identify, integrate, and monitor ethical considerations throughout the lifecycle of an AI tool with the intention to improve patient care. A use case illustrates the application of the agile science-informed roadmap that details the development of a passive digital marker for delirium severity.
