This paper presents a collaborative virtual environment for problem solving in civil engineering, which represents a building with problems related to its structural design (e.g., fissures). In this environment the students play the role of civil engineers. They need to detect the structural problems and evaluate their causes in order to be able to solve them. To accomplish this, the students can act upon the structural elements included in the environment (e.g., pillars) or make use of the working tools that are available (e.g., tape measure). This distributed environment allows for the exploration of the possibility of student collaboration in virtual reality. Furthermore, its design intends to provide a way to implement problem solving in collaborative environments in which genuine interdependence occurs i.e. team members must have different knowledge or abilities in order to create genuine collaboration.

Concepts and principles of TINA (Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture) are introduced with the objective of correcting problems of centralized service control and service data model existent in INs (intelligent networks). Now, it is becoming clear that future sophisticated services breaking away from the simple telephony call model, e.g., multimedia, multi-party conferencing, etc., will need to be rapidly and efficiently introduced, deployed, operated and managed. In this context, TINA developed a comprehensive architecture for multi-service networks that will support multimedia services. On the other hand, the provisioning of all the service management functionality for TINA services (i.e. FCAPS) is still an open research question. In this paper, we discuss accounting features and requirements, security of accounting management, and issues for their integration in a TINA-based service environment. A prototype has been implemented to validate the concepts and results are also presented.

Introduction Polymers exhibit larger elongation and more significant rate- and time-dependent behavior at higher temperature [1]. To understand properties of polymer matrix composites and to correctly evaluate their performance characteristics, therefore, it is one of the most important issues to elucidate the time- and rate-dependent nonlinear behavior of polymer matrix composites at elevated temperature. The objective of the present study is to elucidate characteristics of the short-term stress relaxation behavior of angle-ply CFRP laminates at high temperature. The stress relaxation curves for various angle-ply laminates are presented. By the normalization with respect to the maximum stress at the beginning of each relaxation test, we obtain a master relaxation curve that is characterized by the off-axis time-dependent response of constituent unidirectional plies.

We report an observation of essentially full spatial coherence in a high average power soft-x-ray laser. Rapid coherence buildup due to strong refractive antiguiding in a long plasma column is experimentally demonstrated. This allows the generation of fully coherent, milliwatt-level average power soft-x-ray radiation by a tabletop device. The peak brightness of this laser reaches 2×1025photonss−1mm−2mrad−2 within 0.01% spectral bandwidth, making it one of the brightest soft-x-ray sources available.

We present the fuzzy Bayes predictor (FBP), a hybrid system for the task of monthly electric load forecasting. The FBP is a modification we introduce in the naive Bayes classifier in order to enable it to predict numerical values. We consider three versions of the FBP, each one with a different dependence among the input data: independence, first-order and second-order dependence. For verifying the efficiency of the FBP's prediction, we compare it with two fuzzy systems and two traditional forecasting methods, Box-Jenkins and Winters exponential smoothing.

A prototype quadruped walking robot has been developed to examine the possibility of application in agricultural works. The purpose of current study is to obtain some information on load distribution and inclination angle of vehicle body in three typical motion of forward, lateral and turning walk. The result showed that the current configuration of robot body required the severe translation of CG point which results in increasing of pitching angle of vehicle body.

The problem of finding longest snakes in hypercubes, which has applications in error checking, error correction, and electronic locking schemes, among others, has been an open problem for over forty years. Recently, some attention has been given to maximal snakes in hypercubes, in the hope that this approach will produce information that will be useful in the study of longest snakes. This paper presents a finding that is based on previous research of maximal snakes. The hope is that this line of research can be continued to discover general properties of the existence of maximal snakes in hypercubes.
