作者: SONENSHEIN, RADM. NATHAN USN The author graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the Class of 1938. His work has included instruction in Naval Construction and Marine Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology leading to a Master of Science degree in 1944 and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1964. As an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO) he has served in various Navy commands including the Mare Island Naval Shipyard the former New York Naval Shipyard the USS Philippine Sea (CVA-47) during the Korean War as Chief Engineer and CINCPACFLT and COMSERVPAC Staffs as Fleet and Force Maintenance Officer. Within the Naval Ship Systems Command and its predecessor BUSHIPS his duties have included Director of the Facilities Division Head of the Hull Design Branch Director of the Ship Design Division Assistant Chief for Design Shipbuilding and Fleet Maintenance and as Commander Naval Ship Systems Command from 1969 until 1972. Other duties have included an assignment as the Project Manager for the Navy's Fast Deployment Logistic Ship Project from 1965 to 1967 Deputy Chief of Naval Material for Logistic Support from 1967 to 1969 and Chairman of the Naval Material Command Shipbuilding Council which commenced upon completion of his tour as Commander NAVSHIPS in 1972. On 4 September 1973 he was appointed Director of the Defense Energy Task Group (DETG) and subsequently on 15 November 1973 as Director of Energy for the Department of Defense. A former President of ASNE from 1970 to 1971 he is currently Vice-President of the American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In addition he is a member of the honorary engineering society Sigma Xi and listed among those in Who's Who in America.

Mansour an Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cairo in 1958 and his M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1962 and 1966 respectively. He has had field experience and design responsibilities for about six years in the Suez Canal Authority John J. McMullen Associates Inc. and M. Rosenblatt and Son Inc. and has been with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the past four years. During this period he contributed several technical papers and reports in the areas of structural mechanics sea loads finite element analysis of marine structures and probabilistic structural mechanics. He has been a consultant for several companies and organizations is a member of Sigma Xi and SNAME currently serving as a member of the latter's Stress Analysis and Strength of Structural Elements Panel. USN Lieutenant Commander Paul H. Fenton USN a 1964 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy recently completed a graduate education program at M.I.T. in the field of Naval Construction and Engineering earning two degrees: Ocean Engineer and Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He is presently assigned to the Charleston Naval Shipyard Charleston South Carolina and has had previous duty in the U.S.S. STICKELL (DD 888) and with the Naval Support Activity Saigon.

作者: AILOR, W.H. LINDBERG, R.I. William H. Ailor has been a member of the Chemical Metallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Research Division Reynolds Metals Company for six years. Educated in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Tampa Florida and North Carolina State College. He is Task Force chairman of the ASTM B-3/V1 1957 20-Year Test Program for the atmospheric corrosion of metals secretary of ASTM Committee B-3 and is a member of the Electrochemical Society and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He formerly taught diesel engineering at North Carolina State College. He is a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. During World War II he served as engineering officer afloat and later as commanding officer of USS PC 616 and USS Belet (APD-109). Recalled to service in the Korean conflict he served 17 months as executive officer of the USS Robinson (DD 562). He is in the active reserve and formerly was commanding officer of Surface Division 6–42 in Jacksonville Fla. Currently he is training officer of MSTS Co. 5-1 in Richmond Va. R. I. Lindberg is a corrosion engineer in the engineering services department of Reynolds Metals Company. Author of several papers on corrosion in marine environments Mr. Lindberg is a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Prior to joining Reynolds in 1959 Mr. Lindberg was director of corrosion research for A. M. Byers Co. Pittsbugh Pa. Mr. Lindberg graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1939 with B. S. and Ch. E. degrees. He took post graduate work at Purdue University receiving a Master of Science degree in 1942.

作者: AZIZ, ABDUL THE AUTHOR was born in East Pakistan on January 31 1932 received the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Dacca University in Pakistan in 1952 and the Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Michigan State University in 1953. He did further graduate work at MIT Columbia and Johns Hopkins Universities and is now a candidate for the doctoral degree at the University of Maryland. He joined the Department of Navy in March 1966 with the Naval Ship Research and Development Center Annapolis Division where he worked on the MESA (Machinery Effectiveness Systems Analysis) Program sponsored by the Navy Ship Systems Command. The present paper is largely based on a 138-page report entitled “Systems Effectiveness in the United States Navy” on the works of the MESA Program. Currently he is assigned to the Naval Research Laboratory to provide inhouse engineering support in the development and analysis of systems and their components for the conduct of fundamental research in Astronomy and Astrophysics by the Laboratory. Prior to joining the Department of Navy he worked for General Electric Cdmpany in the analysis and development of large steam turbine components and for Burns & Roe Corporation in systems design and analysis for power plants both fossil powered and nuclear. With Burns & Roe he participated in the systems effectiveness analysis of the Army PM-3A nuclear power plant in the Antarctica. He received the United States citizenship in January 1966 is a member of the ASME and the U.S. Naval Institute.

David Berg a native of Michigan received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Michigan Technological University in 1951 after which he began his career with the Bureau of Ships in the Machinery Design Branch on noise shock and vibration problems. He was project engineer for the axial flow pumpjet development on USS Witek (DD848) and USS Glover (AGDE1) and received his Master of Engineering Degree in Naval Architecture in 1964 from the University of California Berkeley. Mr. Berg is currently acting head of the Ship Performance and Trials Section of the Propulsion Systems Analysis Branch in the Naval Ship Engineering Center. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1962 for contributions to the design of the USS Thresher (SSN593) and was awarded the Superior Performance Award for Outstanding Performance in 1966. Hugh Marron a native of Pennsylvania received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1939. Upon graduation he was employed for one year with the Pennsylvania Department of Highways as a construction engineer. In July 1940 he became a Marine Engineer at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where after a period of apprenticeship and special training in this new field he was assigned to the Machinery Scientific Group of the Design Division. Then in October 1945 he was transferred to the Design Division of the Bureau of Ships. Mr. Marron is now a Project Coordinator in the Propulsion Power and Auxiliary Systems Division of the Naval Ship Engineering Center. Walter S. Jones a native of Virginia graduated from the George Washington University with a BME in June 1958. From July of that year through June 1965 he served with the Machinery Design Branch of the Bureau of Ships where he was Project Engineer for the Hydroneu-matic Ram Jet and Water jet Propulsion Systems. Mr. Jones is currently the Machinery Coordinator for the Computer Aided Ship Design Program in the Naval Ship Engineering Center.

DOUGHERTY is Director of Personnel and Contract Administration for The Dikewood Corporation a group of computer-oriented consulting scientists research engineers and data processors in University Research Park Albuquerque New Mexico. Mr. Dougherty attended Stevens Institute of Technology from 1940 to 1942. A 1945 Annapolis graduate and a 1948 faculty member there he received the degree of Master of Science in Engineering Electronics from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1953. He is a Professional Electrical Engineer registered in New Mexico and the District of Columbia a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Technical Group on Engineering Management a member of ASNE and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 1962 he received the Navy Bureau of Ships Research and Development Award for Scientific Achievement. He is the author of some twenty technical and management papers and from 1963 to 1965 as a Navy Commander was Assistant Director of Communications Satellite Programs Headquarters NASA Washington D.C.

Larson USN: is an Engineering Duty Officer of the United States Navy who served in the Army as a sergeant of infantry in Europe during World War II. Appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy in 1945 he graduated in June 1949. After two years in the Amphibious Force U. S. Pacific Fleet on board the USS MOUNT McKINLEY (AGC-7) and one year on the USS BREMERTON (CA-130) during the Korean hostilities he attended Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. Receiving his Master of Science in Naval Architecture in 1955 he served two years as an Assistant Planning and Estimating Superintendent for Fitting Out and New Construction at Boston Naval Shipyard and then two years as Assistant Force Maintenance Officer on the staff of Commander Amphibious Force U. S. Pacific Fleet. From 1959–1961 he attended the University of California Berkeley for advanced work in Hydrodynamics. The next two years were spent at the David Taylor Model Basin as Propeller Program Officer. He has been a Project Coordinator in the Hull Design Branch Ship Design Division in the Bureau of Ships since August 1963. Commander J. H. Demyttenaere U. S. Navy: is an Engineering Duty Officer of the United States Navy and is currently serving as a Project Coordinator in the Hull Design Branch of the Ship Design Division in the Bureau of Ships. He received his B.S. degree in Engineering from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1949. After serving a two year tour on board the USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47) he was ordered to postgraduate training and received the degree of Naval Engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954. He has served in numerous Engineering Duty Officer billets since 1954 including two years at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in the Production Department two years of Staff Duty with Commander Service Squadron One three years as Design Project Officer at Supervisor of Shipbuilding New York and most recently as Repair Officer in USS ARCADIA (AD-23).
