Interviews of twenty-six Industrial Engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

We start from a case study of an architecture company and move on to a framework of agents to identify and inform conceptual design. The processes and problems exhibited by the company involved are quite common and can be found in other similar companies. Our intent is to instrument the current process using agent technology, in an effort to improve global awareness during the conceptual design phase, allowing the designers to design so as to facilitate later steps and optimize the process as a whole.

Human systems integration and advanced technology in engineering department workload and manpower reduction

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. His areas of expertise include workload simulation task analysis operator-in-the-loop simulation human performance experimentation statistical analysis and human factors T&E. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

Concepts and principles of TINA (Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture) are introduced with the objective of correcting problems of centralized service control and service data model existent in INs (intelligent networks). Now, it is becoming clear that future sophisticated services breaking away from the simple telephony call model, e.g., multimedia, multi-party conferencing, etc., will need to be rapidly and efficiently introduced, deployed, operated and managed. In this context, TINA developed a comprehensive architecture for multi-service networks that will support multimedia services. On the other hand, the provisioning of all the service management functionality for TINA services (i.e. FCAPS) is still an open research question. In this paper, we discuss accounting features and requirements, security of accounting management, and issues for their integration in a TINA-based service environment. A prototype has been implemented to validate the concepts and results are also presented. © 2001 IEEE.

INTELLIGENT MACHINERY CONTROL INTEGRATION

作者： FAIRHEAD, DL HALL, CC Since graduating from Cleveland State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics he has worked for the Navy at Annapolis participating in several different automation efforts ranging from design aids to surface ship bridge control. Mr. Fairhead has completed graduate work in Computer Science at the University of Maryland has a certificate in Computer Programming holds a patent and is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Upon graduation from Morgan State in 1962 Mr. Hall was employed as a physicist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division Annapolis until 1994. During that time period he served as program technical manager for propulsion technology and as senior project scientist for several automation projects including the Automated Ships Bridge project. Mr. Hall also served as a member of the initial Technical Director's Technology Application Team and of the Autonomic Ship Innovation Center Team. Mr. Hall is a member of the American Institute of Physics and Sigma Pi Sigma (National Physics Honor Society).

A growing concern about the shrinking size of the U.S. Navy budget and the pool from which selections will be made to ''man'' U. S. Navy shipboard systems has led to investigations on achieving improvements in affordability and operational effectiveness. One such investigation has resulted in the development of the Standard Monitoring and Control System (SMCS), a modular, open architecture control system which includes the control system components for propulsion, electric plant, auxiliaries, and damage control. The first major technology upgrade to SMCS will entail the insertion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into HM&E monitoring and control applications. The Intelligent Machinery Control Integration Task (IMCI) was established to provide a structural approach for this major technology upgrade. As part of the first phase of IMCI, an identification of intelligent control requirements, an assessment of AI technologies, and a survey of intelligent control applications were performed. This paper lists those HM&E-related shipboard operational requirements from which intelligent machinery control requirements will be identified. Also, there is an initial assessment of AI-related reasoning and the following AI technologies, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic, neural nets, and genetic algorithms. The survey provided some insight into applying AI technologies to SMCS shipboard operational requirements.

Mr. Lindgren is a 1958 graduate of the University of Southwest Louisiana. His degree is in mechanical engineering and he is also a licensed professional engineer. William A. Solitario:is the director of advanced technology at Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. in Pascagoula Miss. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the City University of New York and has 28 years experience in marine engineering and design. His current responsibilities include the direction of Ingalls' IRAD programs and several Navy-funded R&D programs to improve ship's performance and reduce ship's operating costs. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and past chairman of the Gulf Section East Area. Arnold P. Moore:is the director design engineering at Ingalls Shipbuilding where he is responsible for all new construction design and engineering activities. Prior to promotion to his current position Mr. Moore served as chief naval architect at Ingalls. He has 24 years experience in ship design construction and repair. Mr. Moore holds the professional degree of ocean engineer as well as a master's degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from MIT. He also earned a bachelor's degree in naval science from the U.S. Naval Academy and is a registered professional engineer. Mr. Moore served as an engineering duty officer in the U.S. Navy and is currently a captain in the Naval Reserve. He is a past chairman of the Gulf Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and Sigma Xi. Michel A. The SA'AR-5 Corvette program is the first major warship construction to be entirely accomplished using a 3-dimensional, interference checked computer based design. This paper discusses the organization and approach used to create the design models which form the basis for interference checking as well as the source of extracted production data. The design or product model is the nucleus of the computer data base that defines the configuration of the entire ship. The data base includes geometry, weight, and material, as well as production control data. The ability of the computer to link such diverse information is the key to maintaining configuration control during the course of the design and construction. The ease with which formatted manufacturing data (both N.C. fabrication and installation) can be extracted enables the preparation of detailed packages containing the desired geometry as well as the associated material and sequencing data, thus assuring the producibility of the design. The SA'AR-5 design is CAD/CAM's state of the art in U.S. shipbuilding.

All previously known algorithms for solving the multicommodity flow problem with capacities are based on linear programming. The best of these algorithms [14] uses a fast matrix multiplication algorithm and takes O(k25n2m5 log(nDU)) time to find an approximate solution, where κ is the number of commodities, n and m denote the number of nodes and edges in the network, D is the largest demand, and U is the largest edge capacity. Substantially more time is needed to find an exact solution. As a consequence, even multicommodit y flow problems with jnst a few commodities are believed to be much harder than single-commodity maximum-flow or minimum-cost flow problems. In thk paper, we describe the first polynomial-Time combinatorial algorithms for approximately solving the multicommodity flow problem. The running time of our randomized algorithm is (up to ,log factors) the same as the time needed to solve κ single-commodity flow problems, thus giving the surprising result that approximately computing a κ-commodity maximum-flow is not much harder than computing about κ single-commodity maximum-flows in isolation. In fact, we prove that a (simple) κ-commodity flow problem can be approximately solved by approximately solving O(κ log2 n) single-commodity minimum-cost flow problems. Our κ-commodity algorithm runs in O(knm log4 n) time with high probability. We also describe a deterministic algorithm that uses an O(κ)-factor more time. Given any multicommodit y flow problem as input, both rdgorithms are guaranteed to provide a feasible solution to a modified fIOW problem in which all capacities are increased by a (1 + c)-factor, or to provide a proof that there is no feasible solution to the original problem. We also describe faster approximation algorithms for multicommodity flow problems with a special structure, such as those that arise in the 'sparsest cutn problems studied in [8, 10, 9], and the uniform concurrent flow problems studied in [13, 9] if κ ≥ √m. © 1991 ACM.

Herein, it is shown that by exploiting integral definitions of well known special functions, through generalizations and differentiations, broad classes of definite integrals can be solved in closed form or in terms of special functions. This is especially useful when there is no closed form solution to the indefinite form of the integral. In this paper, three such classes of definite integrals are presented. Two of these classes incorporate and supercede all of Kölbig's integration formulae [11], including his formulation for the computation of Cauchy principal values. Also presented are the mathematical derivations that support the implementation of a third class which exploits the incomplete Gamma function. The resulting programs, based on pattern matching, differentiation, and occasionally limits, are very efficient. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.
