The cardiac muscle is elastic and deformable. Pushing a catheter in contact with the cardiac muscle surface to conduct focal energy-based ablative therapies, such as RF ablation, requires an adequate electrode-tissue contact surface to transfer the energy to the target site. In this regard, the relationship between the contact force (CF) and the resulting mechanical response is still unclear, in particular, the insertion depth (ID) and the diameter of the surface deformation. The objective of this study was to quantify these relationships using an ex vivo model and a computational model. A rigid bar with a 2.3 mm diameter blunt tip (mimicking a 7Fr standard ablation catheter) was placed at a perpendicular orientation on a fragment of the porcine heart. CF values ranged from 10 to 80g. We used ANSYS to build a Mooney-Rivlig model of 3 parameters based on hyperelastic material and to simulate the same conditions as in the experiments. Folding angle and wing flexibility influence the flight performance of origami winged fruits

Winged fruits possess a unique flight mechanism relying on simple geometric structures rather than neuromuscular control. This study proposes an innovative approach using origami techniques to create three-winged model fruits, serving as a proxy for understanding the flight dynamics of natural winged fruits. Paper is employed to simulate inherent wing flexibility, with the option to add plastic frames for rigidity. We comprehensively investigate the free fall motion of both rigid and flexible winged fruits through experimental and numerical analyses. Velocity–time curves reveal a three-stage descent pattern—acceleration, deceleration, and steady states. The overshoot phenomenon is attributed to rapid lift increase due to leading-edge vortices attaching stably to the wings. This insight sheds light on aerodynamics governing fruit flight. Compared with rigid wings, flexible wings exhibit two key properties—slower descent and higher self-orienting capability—that facilitate a more stable and longer-distance dispersal of seeds under crosswind conditions. Our study demonstrates the potential benefits of flexible wings in natural seed distribution. This study advances our understanding of winged fruit flight dynamics, utilizing origami as a powerful tool for biomimetic investigations. The findings have broad implications, from improving aerodynamic designs to developing efficient micro air vehicles and electronic microfliers, and understanding seed dispersal evolution. This paper introduces an experimental method to detect the motion of an electrostatic Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) resonator in aqueous media. The resonator comprises a micro cantilever beam subject to electrostatic actuation through a side electrode. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the resonator is developed to determine the in-plane mode shapes and their natural frequencies in order to facilitate the experimental study. The motion of the resonator lead to variations in its capacitance and induce a current. The developed experiments demonstrate that motion-induced current can be measured and analyzed to detect the motion of the resonator's higher-order modes and can be used in chemical sensing. © 2024 IEEE.

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Despite the potential benefits that the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) can bring to the system, it may cause problems related to power quality constraints, such $as$ reverse power flow in substation and overvoltages. An effective approach to address these problems involves the adoption of reactive and active power control in grid-tie inverters associated with DER. Therefore, this paper assesses the impacts of grid-tie inverter control modes, including both Volt-Var and Volt-Watt strategies, on the DER hosting capacity. In order to improve the overall system operation, modifications in the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt curves were proposed. It is noteworthy that these control strategies can have adverse effects on certain distribution system performance indicators, such $as$ voltage deviation and power losses;for this reason, these indicators are also evaluated in this study. A stochastic approach was adopted to deal with the uncertainties associated with DERs and loads. Finally, from tests conducted in the IEEE 33-bus test system, it was concluded that the proper adjustment of the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt control curves significantly influences DER hosting capacity, $as$ well $as$ voltage deviation and power losses. © 2023 IEEE.

The aerospace manufacturing industry exhibits significant complexity in all its tasks. For instance, the aircraft’s main body comprises several components with multiple dimensions, geometries, and materials. This kind of manufacturing system is specialised in creating aerospace parts characterised by advanced technology, limited production quantities, and a high degree of customisation. The aerospace products and the corresponding manufacturing systems have extensive life cycles spanning decades and are repurposed to accommodate product variations. Any disturbance during the project progression has the potential to result in escalated expenses and time investments, leaving economic and environmental drivers. In this way, Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPS) are emerging to reduce misinterpretation and mistakes across all stages of the manufacturing process. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to discuss the current issues and emergent technologies across the literature review to address the following Research Issue 1 (RI1): What are the current issues and emergent technologies in CPPS and KDD for the Aerospace Industry? Research Issue 2 (RI2): What is the gap in CPPS and KDD for the aerospace industry? This initial literature review is concentrated on the Knowledge data-driven (KDD) to aid in developing CPPS for Aerospace Sheet Metal (ASM) parts manufacturing and examining the use of CPPS in the aerospace sector. Finally, this research contributes to the research community with an initial overview of research trends in the domain of KDD for CPPS in the aerospace industry and finds the main research gaps in this area.

The use of synthetic images has been highlighted within the computer vision field as a more practical option that helps reduce the time and cost spent on vehicle detection tasks in urban environments. This paper presents a framework for automated synthetic image generation, aiming at the detection of vehicles in urban environments. The creation of the 3D scenario is carried out through the Blender software. Some adverse conditions of the scenes were developed, including: rain, fog, occlusion by tree branches and electrical power lines, and low lighting. Then the algorithm for the automated generation of images was developed based on parameters chosen by the user to generate the scene and to generate the annotations of the images. Additionally, a convolutional neural network with YOLOv5 architecture along with a cross-validation technique was applied to carry out vehicle detections on the developed synthetic dataset, on both real and mixed datasets. The proposed framework generated a consistent dataset that can be used in vehicle detection networks, obtaining a mAP 0.5 above 96% and mAP 0.5:0.95 above 82%, also the precision values remained above 92%, and recall above 95%. It was also observed that the combination of synthetic images with real images can improve the performance of the model.

In the high-performance computing domain, Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a novel accelerator that exhibits high flexibility and performance characteristics distinct from other accelerators such as the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Recent advanced high-end FPGA is equipped with multiple channels of high speed optical link up to 100Gbps performance for each. This is a crucial feature when we construct PC clusters with FPGAs as accelerators, however it is not easy to utilize from user kernels because this feature is implemented in low level and simple direct communication between neighboring FPGAs. In order to provide the communication feature between FPGAs for accelerated PC clusters, we developed a communication system named CIRCUS which implies a user-friendly API from OpenCL and is equipped with routing function over multi-hop communication on multi-dimensional torus network of FPGAs. However, current CIRCUS only provides a point-to-point communication between source and destination FPGAs. In ordinary parallel processing environment such as MPI, the user program the message passing with various collective communication functions for parallel algorithm, for instance Allreduce, Allgather, etc. In this paper, we implement the collective communication function over CIRCUS for user-friendly programming of ordinary parallel algorithms on FPGAs. As the first target, we implement Allreduce function which is the most essential and important function. The paper describes the CIRCUS system briefly followed by the design, implementation and preliminary performance evaluation on Intel Stratix10 FPGAs. © 2023 ACM.

Multi-objective optimization techniques are practical techniques for controller tuning purposes. A wide variety of papers use such an approach or propose new algorithms to approximate the Pareto front. Nevertheless, despite the expressive volume of works dealing with it, there is no standard benchmark testbed that could be used as a baseline comparison among different techniques. This work addresses such a gap, with a first step proposing a linear-SISO testbed with guidelines and rules and providing a basic example for a PI controller. Such a benchmark is expected to promote further research on the topic.
