Recent studies on molecular level classification of tissues have produced remarkable results, and indicated that gene expression assays could significantly aid in the development of efficient cancer diagnosis and classification platforms. However, cancer classification based on the DNA array data is still a difficult problem. The main challenge is the overwhelming number of genes relative to the number of training samples. It makes accurate classification of data more difficult. This paper applies genetic algorithms (GA) with an initial solution provided by t-statistics (t-GA) for selecting a group of relevant genes from cancer microarray data. The decision tree based cancer classifier is then built on top of these selected genes. The performance of this approach is evaluated by comparing with other gene selection methods using the publicly available gene expression datasets. Experimental results indicate that t-GA has the highest accurate rate among different methods. The Z-score figure also shows that the gene selection operation provided by t-GA is reproducible. © 2007 IEEE.

Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs in science and technology usually do not include teaching courses. Thus, most professors are forced to rely on their experience as students, and mimic good teaching practices of their model teachers. The work reported herein is an attempt to correct this by giving future professors an opportunity to develop good teaching practices while in graduate school, through a course in "faculty development". The course syllabus includes: student attraction and retention, assessment, course content, faculty development, teaching methods, program organization, relationship with students, lecture preparation, teaching techniques, ethics, and learning theory. The class is split into groups of four or less students, which must read the references and prepare short presentations for the topics planned for each meeting. Some of the students which take the course are already teaching at the time and are able to apply what they learn even as the course progresses, reporting positive reactions from their students, as well as improved learning and student attitude.

One of the most important issues in developing a balanced relationship between the government and private concessionaire is establishment of a fair revenue-sharing scheme. In practice, there are several conventional types of revenue-sharing schemes and each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Appling a suitable revenue-sharing scheme for the multiple-operator system (where there are a number of private concessionaires) will enhance system fairness and management efficiency. Using the scheme for every private operator in the system, however, may not be appropriate, as each operator may have different financial configurations such as investment cost, operation & maintenance cost (OMC) and expected revenue. The objective of this paper is to discuss the conventional approaches of the revenue-sharing scheme and to recommend an innovative and appropriate one to reduce risk burden and maintain the incentive of the private concessionaires to improve efficiency and service quality of project.

Our highly digitized world brings us into contact with networked information systems with the potential to help us locate information quickly and easily at the touch of a button. But it is far from easy to quickly find the exact information we need. Every new resource added increases the time needed to locate the right information. The increasing scale of resource collections continues to drive the need for innovative methods of organizing and providing access to the information within these collections (Bates, 1999 ). This panel will discuss the prospect of designing for uncertainty - that is creating information systems based on the premise that (in certain situations) uncertainty can be a powerful mediating strategy for people.

Every technology, especially in ubiquitous computing area, should be geared to improve the quality of their users' life ultimately. In order to achieve this goal, the important pre-requisite is to measure the contribution of the technology to quality of life reliably and validly. This study provides a theoretical as well as an empirical basis for the development of better measures for the contribution of a mobile data service technology to the quality of its users' lives. The reliability and validity of the proposed metrics were verified through online surveys in Korea and Japan. The survey results also indicated that critical mobile data services could be identified based on the degree of contribution to the quality of life of mobile data-service users. Moreover, the critical services were found to be different between Korea and Japan. (c) 2006 PICMET.

We have utilized ZnCl 2 -dimethylsulfone (DMSO 2 ) as the electrolyte with added CoCl 2 and GdCl 3 for electrodepositing a magnetic film. Moreover, the controlled potential method was utilized for film deposition. The voltammogram revealed that the reduction of Co-Zn-Gd film can be achieved by applying a potential in the range from -0.1 to -0.5 volts. From the results of AGM analyses, a high squareness value (Mr/Ms = 0.923) of the Co-Zn-Gd film at -0.3 volt was observed. In previous research, perpendicular magnetic materials have been applied to magnetic optic (MO) media, magnetic recording heads, and perpendicular magnetic tunneling junction (pMTJ). However, preparation of magnetic materials is normally carried out in high vacuum systems. Since electrodeposition methods for preparation of magnetic films have several advantages, such as simple equipment, ease of operation and relatively large area, the use of electrodeposition has great potential for preparing films.
