Virtual Reality is becoming a mature technology field. To understand its origins and foresee strategies, a study on the last decade of papers published in the Brazilians' most prominent symposium (the SVR - Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality) has been carried out. Papers were classified according to language, international participants, areas and sub-areas of application and related technologies. Although oversees participants has proven not constant, papers published in English has proven stable to SVR editions. The study also shows that health related applications have received most of the attention although techniques and tools proposal have raised the most recently which could be related to the low-level programming languages and frameworks preferences. The number of Augmented Reality papers has grown steadily and a great variety of underlying knowledge fields (such as 3D interaction and real-time simulation) are persistent topics of interest. An expected shift from VRML to other 3D Web technologies have already happened but there are just a few research papers devoted to formulative, evaluative or descriptive approaches. Data show that by improving the research budget to the area could impact productivity, a centralized database of publications would facilitate recovering and analyzing past contributions and, that enforcing more scientifically rigorous and English-written papers could raise the quality and visibility of Brazilians' research in VR.

This paper presents a cycle of action research conducted to investigate techniques for visualization and filtering of awareness information in a mobile collaborative game titled Warming Up The Brain. This study aims to identify the awareness information that should be presented to the users as well as how to arrange the awareness information in the mobile devices, considering its small screen size. In order to avoid problems such as information overload and information intrusiveness, the awareness information were filtered based on the group data. The game was used by 30 players, divided in 7 rounds. The usability evaluation show that the awareness information were well absorbed by users.

Periods in the soybean summer cycle that are sensitive to the occurrence of high temperatures were studied. An analysis was performed on the variability of soybean yields associated with crop canopy temperatures during key development periods. A land surface temperature (LST) data series from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on the Aqua satellite was processed between 2003 and 2012 that covered the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data from MODIS on the Terra satellite were used to monitor the LST during different phenological stages. Spatially interpolated maps of soybean yield distributions were generated using data obtained from Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) at state and municipality levels. The results indicate that canopy-LST occurrence in mid-February, during the grain filling, is most correlated to yield reduction (R2 = 0.82 and RMSD = 14.4%). At the state level, the average yield is 2003 kg·ha-1 with a standard deviation of 308 kg·ha-1. The overall average of the canopy-LST is 305.0 K (31.8°C) with a standard deviation of 1.9 K. The slope of the downward linear relationship between canopy-LST and yield was -28.7%. These results indicate that monitoring heat wave events can provide important information for characterising agriculture vulnerability.

In this paper we present the use of participatory design in a public health management system, called PRONTO, that is being developed in Brazil. This system involves a partnership between the city hall and the University of Blumenau and it is being developed by the Development Laboratory and Transfer of Technology. The project involves a health network with 64 units of family health, 8 ambulatories and 1 polyclinic. The paper describes the experience in the project phase of the Multidisciplinary Treatment System module and presents the obtained results.

With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) vision, RFID technology has attracted more and more interests from many industries. In the EPCglobal standard which standardizes RFID architectural framework and interfaces, the Electronic Product Code Information System (EPCIS) - the repository in the RFID network - plays a pivotal role in storing dynamic and historical RFID trajectory data, well-tailored to supply chain applications. However, in the IoT era, EPCIS should be capable of storing a large amount of realtime and continuous time-series RFID data in a scalable manner. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the requirements and current design of EPCIS and report current limitations of SQL-based approaches for IoT applications. To cope with these limitations, we explore a NoSQL-based approach for EPCIS in the IoT and propose a column-family-based data model and customization for Cassandra-based EPCIS. Using real-world implementation, we also conduct a performance comparison between MySQL and Cassandra in different deployment scenarios (i.e., physical and virtual machines). As a result, we show the benefits of using Cassandra datastore for EPCIS in the IoT in terms of response time, throughput, and flexibility.

Towards Cloud-based Asynchronous Elasticity for Iterative HPC Applications

Elasticity is one of the key features of cloud computing. It allows applications to dynamically scale computing and storage resources, avoiding over- and under-provisioning. In high performance computing (HPC), initiatives are normally modeled to handle bag-of-tasks or key-value applications through a load balancer and a loosely-coupled set of virtual machine (VM) instances. In the joint-field of Message Passing Interface (MPI) and tightly-coupled HPC applications, we observe the need of rewriting source codes, previous knowledge of the application and/or stop-reconfigure-and-go approaches to address cloud elasticity. Besides, there are problems related to how profit this new feature in the HPC scope, since in MPI 2.0 applications the programmers need to handle communicators by themselves, and a sudden consolidation of a VM, together with a process, can compromise the entire execution. To address these issues, we propose a PaaS-based elasticity model, named AutoElastic. It acts as a middleware that allows iterative HPC applications to take advantage of dynamic resource provisioning of cloud infrastructures without any major modification. AutoElastic provides a new concept denoted here as asynchronous elasticity, i.e., it provides a framework to allow applications to either increase or decrease their computing resources without blocking the current execution. The feasibility of AutoElastic is demonstrated through a prototype that runs a CPU-bound numerical integration application on top of the OpenNebula middleware. The results showed the saving of about 3 min at each scaling out operations, emphasizing the contribution of the new concept on contexts where seconds are precious.

Digital road maps have gained fundamental role in population's daily life, so they need to be accurate and up-to-date. A viable solution is to generate maps by processing GPS data. However, one of the most challenging tasks regarding this approach is how to extract road centerlines from the cloud of georeferenced GPS points. The literature presents various methods that do it, but none have been found that is prepared for the continuous update of the map and refinement of its roads' accuracy. In this context, the objective of this work is to propose a method to identify road centerlines using an evolutive algorithm in order to generate and update road maps. This work uses as source of data GPS traces collected by smartphones. Although suitable to obtain a large amount of georeferenced data, these devices bring the additional problem of identifying the transport vehicle used along each trace. Preliminary results indicate that the method's performance is satisfactory, with an average variation of 2.95 meters in relation to satellite images.

Participatory cities are those that allow the participation of citizens in the construction and improvement of their common daily life. In this work we present a tool for that participation, allowing the citizens to register the occurrences as well as take knowledge about the global geographic status of their city in on a variety of contexts (security, transit, etc.). However, a tool like that, fed by the people, certainly will deal with a large amount of information, distributed geographically. To accomplish that, a precise criterion for visualizing the resultant density distribution of occurrences must be used. In this paper, we also propose an automatic method for that visualization based on Voronoi Diagrams. The Voronoi polygons divide the region according to the concentration of occurrences. In this scheme, the area of each Voronoi polygon defines the density of the occurrences of the specific categories which are shown in the city map in color and transparency intensities for visualization. This can easily reveal the space distribution of important issues, in a variety of contexts such as criminality, commercial and industrial activities, drugs traffic, illumination concerns, and others. © 2013 IEEE.

Spectral Model for Soybean Yield Estimate Using MODIS/EVI Data

Attaining reliable and timely agricultural estimates is very important everywhere, and in Brazil, due to its characteristics, this is especially true. In this study, estimations of crop production were made based on the temporal profiles of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. The objective was to evaluate the coupled model (CM) performance of crop area and crop yield estimates based solely on MODIS/EVI as input data in Rio Grande do Sul State, which is characterized by high variability in seasonal soybean yields, due to different crop development conditions. The resulting production estimates from CM were compared to official agricultural statistics of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Company of Food Supply (CONAB) at different levels from 2000/2001 to 2010/2011 crop years. Results obtained with CM indicate that its application is able to generate timely production estimates for soybean both at municipality and local levels. Validation estimates with CM at State level obtained R2 = 0.95. Combining all cropping years at municipality level, estimates were highly correlated to official statistics from IBGE, with R2 = 0.91 and RMSD = 10,840 tons. Spatially interpolated comparisons of yield maps obtained from the CM estimates and IBGE data also showed visual similarity in their spatial distribution. Local level comparisons were performed and presented R2 = 0.95. Implications of this work point out that time-series analysis of production estimates are able to provide anticipated spatial information prior to the soybean harvest.

Modelling of articulated figures such as simple hierarchical relationships are suitable for most cases of animation. Typically, for the representation of human and animal figures, a tree topology is sufficient. But complex high-dimensional articulated structures with many end-effectors and the movement that can be generated in any joint in any direction, are extremely complex to model. Multi-legged robots made to attend applications which needs the extreme versatility to climb or move into places of very difficult access are more efficient if its joints can perform motion at standard and reverse direction, its segments can be moved by more than one joint and any of its joints can be the root of the motion chain. This article presents an approach to deal with these gaps in modeling the motion topology of legged-robots based on rotation of joints references frames. We also present an aplication of an hybrid algorithm based on Genetic Algorithm and Tabu Search to find a good quality solution to the robot motion sequences.
