AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an open-source video encoding format launched in 2018 by Alliance for Open Media. To achieve high coding efficiency, AV1 brings significant innovations in comparison to its predecessor, the VP9 format. However, this came at the cost of a higher encoding complexity due to the newly introduced tools and block partitioning structures. To allow for wide deployment of AV1 in different multimedia devices, adjusting its encoding process according to the available computational resources is strongly desirable. Thus, this work presents an adaptive complexity controller for the AV1 encoder based on multi-objective optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed controller reduces encoding complexity in a target range from 10% to 40%, with satisfactory precision varying between 0.04 and 4.10 percentage points, and a BD-Rate between 0.22% and 5.24%.

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

We propose an Open Visual Perception framework for autonomous navigation and obstacle detection in marine sailing vessels. The proposed framework lays the groundwork for perceiving marine objects needed for vessel navigation and obstacle avoidance using only image processing as the primary method. Various methods are explored to extract features such as waterline, terrain, and other vessels. The proposed framework also incorporates image stabilization techniques without the need for an Inertial Measurement Unit to compensate for ocean wave oscillations. The work also introduces the system architecture of an autonomous marine vessel, besides the components of the open visual perception framework. Results demonstrate the capabilities of obstacle detection, horizon line identification, and water texture detection. © 2023 IEEE.

Microblogs generate a vast amount of data in which users express their emotions regarding almost all aspects of everyday life. Capturing affective content from these context-dependent and subjective texts is a challenging task. We propose an intelligent probabilistic model for textual emotion recognition in multidimensional space (TERMS) that captures the subjective emotional boundaries and contextual information embedded in a text for robust emotion recognition. It is implausible with discrete label assignment;therefore, the model employs a soft assignment by mapping varying emotional perceptions in a multidimensional space and generates them as distributions via the Gaussian mixture model (GMM). To strengthen emotion distributions, TERMS integrates a probabilistic emotion classifier that captures the contextual and linguistic information from texts. The integration of these aspects, the context-aware emotion classifier and the learned GMM parameters provide a complete coverage for accurate emotion recognition. The large-scale experimentation shows that compared to baseline and state-of-the-art models, TERMS achieved better performance in terms of distinguishability, prediction, and classification performance. Background/Context: Recent laws to ensure the security and protection of personal data establish new software requirements. Consequently, new technologies are needed to guarantee software quality under the perception of privacy and protection of personal data. Therefore, we created a checklist-based inspection technique (LGPDCheck) to support the identification of defects in software artifacts based on the principles established by the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD). Objective/Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of LGPDCheck for verifying privacy and data protection (PDP) in software artifacts compared to ad-hoc techniques. Method: To assess LGPDCheck and ad-hoc techniques experimentally through a quasi-experiment (two factors, five treatments). The data will be collected from IoT-based health software systems built by software engineering students from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The data analyses will compare results from ad-hoc and LGPDCheck inspections, the participant's effectiveness and efficiency in each trial, defects' variance and standard deviation, and time spent with the reviews. The data will be screened for outliers, and normality and homoscedasticity will be verified using the Shapiro-Wilk and Levene tests. Nonparametric or parametric tests, such as the Wilcoxon or Student's t-tests, will be applied as appropriate. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Smart villages that utilize digital technology are a solution to assist rural community services in meeting their needs, especially for developing countries. However, financial problems, namely the high cost of infrastructure, the size of the informal economy and governance are challenges in limiting the government’s aspirations regarding the smart village concept. The presentation of this article examines the state of smart village development in developing countries, which includes conceptual understanding, motivations, drivers and barriers to smart villages. The purpose of this study is to find answers to research questions by reviewing several selected study articles. The method used was to search for selected studies and there were 60 selected studies identified from a search of five literature databases which initially contained 3394 articles. The results of the data were analyzed using synthetic analysis and thematic analysis. The results of this study found data related to Concept, Technology, Barriers To Smart Village which came from several articles by answering questions from the research, namely RQ1: How many articles from the 10 most populous countries discussed Smart Village, RQ2: What are the basic dimensions of Smart Village, RQ3: What new technologies are discussed in Smart Village digitization, RQ4: What are the Challenges in Smart Village. The results of this SLR can also later be used as a reference for further researchers to find out the background of research related to smart villages. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) networks require low-latency communications utilizing a broad spectrum while operating under jamming. In this sense, low complexity antenna array-based broadband jamming mitigation schemes are crucial in order to allow low latency communication and low-cost hardware. In this paper we propose low-complexity algorithms for signal recovery in broadband processing scenario applied to V2X. Numerical simulation of a jamming scenario demonstrate the proposed algorithm achieving the same performance in terms of signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) as the state-of-the-art while taking signiflcantly less time to compute.

Recently, a-IGZO has advanced toward the next-generation electronics system because of its compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and back-end-of-line (BOEL) based systems. A systematic electrical characterization of a-IGZO TFT related to reliability issues, such as positive bias temperature stress (PBTS) and negative bias temperature stress (NBTS), would entitle its integration into novel electronics systems. Unexpectedly, PBTS is characterized by the transition of positive Vth shift to negative Vth shift (ΔVth, the positive shift followed by the stress and temperature activated negative shift). This transition is attributed to charge trapping/trap-site generations and hydrogen migration to the active layer. The ΔVth shift mechanism depends on the temperature and voltage stress. On the other hand, a negative ΔVth shift has been observed during the NBTS operation and could be attributed to the hole trapping at the interface of GI/IGZO. An effective suppression of the gate leakage current has also been observed during reliability tests. Simulation results reveal a pronounced potential at the edges of source and drain regions, and considered the origin of hydrogen migration into the IGZO layer. Thermal image results also reveal the strong temperature/potential distribution at the edges of the source/drain regions, indorsing the simulation results. © 2020 IEEE.

Software projects are affected by technical knowledge as well as the personality of the team. Such factors can reduce or increase the software quality and development speed. For successful task allocation, it is essential to consider the skills and profile of each developer, thus maximizing their productivity. In projects with large teams, task allocation can be challenging, and the help of tools can facilitate its execution. In this work, we propose an intelligent approach for allocating software development tasks suitable to the profile of developers. From the literature, we define the appropriate skills and technical profiles for a development team, and the assessment is based on the developer completing a questionnaire. We developed a recommendation system to suggest tasks to be allocated to developers, employing text processing techniques. For validation, 495 tasks were used from an actual project developing simulator software for military training. The recommended allocations were evaluated by the project developers and used to improve the system. Validations showed that the developed approach makes consistent and coherent task recommendations to developers according to the developer profile, as participants agree with the recommendation for 76% of tasks.

Today's pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global Engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students' development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students' global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.
