Today’s pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global Engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students’ development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students’ global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed.

In this work, our study comprises of design and investigation on negative capacitance (NC), metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) field effects transistors (MOSFETs) with spacer and source/drain (S/D) overlap engineering. The scope of the work is to boost the performance and high-energy efficiency of the studied NC-MOSFETs by using the ferro electric material (FE). The NC-MOSFETs with the spacer technology can achieve the admirable Ion/Ioff ratio and subthreshold swing (SS), compared with planar MOSFETs. It makes device scaling possible by eliminating the short channel effect (SCE). We further estimated the effect of FE thickness and spacer, which are another critical parameter of obtaining better electrical characteristics and reducing SS. © 2020 IEEE.

We study the variability of vertically stacked gate-all-around silicon nanosheet (GAA Si NS) complementary field-effect transistors (CFETs). The process variation effect (PVE), the work function fluctuation (WKF), and the random dopant fluctuation (RDF) of CFETs are statistically estimated using an experimentally validated device simulation technique. Among five factors of PVE, the channel thickness (T Nch /T Pch ), the channel width (W ch ), and the gate length (L G ) are significant. Owing to superior GAA channel control and increased effective gate area, both WKF and RDF are suppressed. Notably, the PVE on both N-/P-FETs of GAA Si CFET induce the largest off-state current fluctuations of 80% and 278%, respectively, because the device characteristic is very sensitive to the layer thickness and width of channel.

We report for the first time a novel structure of tunneling field-effect transistors (TFETs) with ferroelectric and nanowire concepts. The device is modeled carefully to utilize the benefits of ferroelectrics through metal-ferroelectric by enhancing the internal voltage across the ferroelectric region. The physical behavior of proposed design is analyzed for the improvement of device performance in comparison to the nominal ferroelectric-insulator TFET structure. The proposed design is capable in delivering impressive figures in Ion as 212 μA/μm. reasonable Ioff together with steep subthreshold swing of 33.3 mV/dec.

Tutorial on communication between access networks and the 5G core

Fifth-generation (5G) networks enable a variety of use cases, e.g., Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications, enhanced Mobile Broadband, and massive Machine Type Communication. To explore the full potential of these use cases, it is mandatory to understand the communication between User Equipment (UE), Radio Access Network (RAN), and 5G Core (5GC), which support new network concepts and paradigms. For example, network slicing plays a crucial role in the communication system to address the challenges expected by the 5G networks. 3rd Generation Partnership Project has recently published Release 16, including the protocols used to communicate between RANs and 5GC, i.e., Non-Access Stratum (NAS) and NG Application Protocol (NGAP). The main goal of this article is to present a comprehensive tutorial about NAS and NGAP specifications using a didactic and practical approach. The tutorial describes the protocol stacks and aspects of the functionality of these protocols in 5G networks, such as authentication and identification procedures, data session establishment, and allocation of resources. Moreover, we review message flows related to these protocols in UE and Next Generation Node B (gNodeB) registration. To illustrate the concepts presented in the tutorial, we introduce a 5GC tester that implements NAS and NGAP for availing of three open-source 5GC projects on a black-box testing methodology. © 2021, CC BY.

This Research Full Paper presents a method to select Learning Objects based on students' cognitive profiles, aiming to facilitate the explained content understanding and programming skills improve. STEM approach has favored the programming skills development in Computer Science courses. Due to initial concepts complexity, many students find it difficult to understand this discipline, causing demotivation or course abandonment. We propose a method using Petri Nets formalism to select a Learning Object that addresses the subject being studied. Petri Nets are formal description techniques used to specify competing systems through graphical and mathematical modeling. Intelligent Agents are computer programs created to automate and perform a certain task or direct interaction with student and propose solutions considered appropriate, based on based on knowledge obtained during the interactions. This research uses the Petri Net to create an Intelligent Agent model, which chooses the Learning Object from answers obtained by applying VAK, an educational questionnaire and results obtained shown to be promising and method was well evaluated by students.

This paper presents a new transistor placement method applied to the ASTRAN EDA tool, an open-source solution for the automatic design of complex digital gates. Although it currently reaches an optimized solution through a Threshold Accepting approach, ASTRAN does not guarantee a minimum-width placement. In this paper, a method based on Boolean satisfiability is proposed, ensuring an optimal solution for the transistor placement task through modeling the problem into a set of Boolean variables and clauses aware of four design rule constraints. Experiments comparing the proposed method and the current ASTRAN placement technique have shown reductions in the layout area. Furthermore, our method achieved a significant improvement regarding runtime, an essential feature for designing digital circuits and systems on-demand.

The high computing complexity of video encoders hinders real-time throughput using a software implementation. This drawback can be amended by implementing hardware accelerators for the most computing-intensive encoder tools to achieve real-time processing while maintaining energy efficiency. In this work, we investigate how approximate and precise versions of the Fractional Motion Estimation (FME), one of the most demanding steps of modern encoders, compare in terms of hardware resources and coding efficiency. To that purpose, we designed a hardware architecture for FME targeting real-time throughput for High Definition (HD) sequences and beyond. This architecture searches over 48 candidates and, unlike most related work, uses 16-bit wide horizontal interpolated samples, which is in compliance with the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference software. Also, it integrates all FME required computations, including the rate cost of each candidate block, what makes it a standalone FME accelerator. We analyze the impacts of our design choices in terms of coding efficiency, using software simulations, and in terms of power/energy consumption, using results obtained from standard cell synthesis.

Due to the presence of distortion, most of the single-channel frequency-domain speech enhancement (SE) approaches are still challenging for downstream automatic speech recognition (ASR) tasks, even with satisfactory improvements in enhancing speech quality and intelligibility. Recently, transformer-based models have shown better performance in speech processing tasks. Therefore, we intend to explore a transformer-based SE model, which is fine-tuned through a two-stage training scheme. Pre-training is performed using a feature-level optimization criterion through SE loss, and then a pre-trained end-to-end ASR model is used to fine-tune the SE model using an ASR-oriented optimization criterion through SE and ASR losses. We evaluate the proposed approach on low-resourced Bengali language, which has not received as much attention as resource-rich English or Mandarin languages in both SE and ASR fields. Experimental results show that it can improve the performance of SE and ASR under severe unseen noisy conditions and its performance is reasonably good compared with other state-of-the-art SE methods.

Experimental Evaluation of a Checklist-Based Inspection Technique to Verify the Compliance of Software Systems with the Brazilian General Data Protection Law

Context: Recent laws to ensure the security and protection of personal data establish new software requirements. Consequently, new technologies are needed to guarantee software quality under the perception of privacy and protection of personal data. Therefore, we created a checklist-based inspection technique (LGPDCheck) to support the identification of defects in software systems based on the principles established by the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD). Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of LGPDCheck for verifying privacy and data protection (PDP) in software artifacts and systems under execution compared to ad-hoc techniques. Method: To assess LGPDCheck and ad-hoc techniques experimentally through two quasi-experiments (two factors, two treatments). The first, in vitro, inspected the vision and requirements specifications artifacts of an integrated accounting information management system. The second, in vivo, they inspected a public and available mobile application used to support legal services to citizens in Brazil. Results: The studies indicate that LGPDCheck improves inspection consistency, detects more PDP defects compared to ad-hoc inspections, is more efficient than ad-hoc inspections when inspecting vision and requirements specifications artifacts, and is comparable in effectiveness to ad-hoc inspections. After initial use, LGPDCheck received positive feedback and was perceived as a useful and easy-to-use technique for detecting PDP defects. The professionals strongly recommended using LGPDCheck for this purpose. Conclusion: LGPDCheck is a feasible checklist-based inspection technique for detecting PDP defects in software systems. However, further studies are necessary to strengthen confidence in LGPDCheck as a recommended technique for privacy and data protection in software artifacts and systems in Brazil. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
