In this document, some novel theoretical and computational techniques for constrained approximation of data-driven systems, are presented. The motivation for the development of these techniques came from structure-preserving matrix approximation problems that appear in the fields of system identification and model predictive control, for data-driven systems and processes. The research reported in this document is focused on finite-state approximation of data-driven systems. Quantum Contextuality Requires Counterfactual Gain

Quantum contextuality, where measurement outcomes depend on the measurement context, implies a failure of classical realism in quantum systems. As recently shown, the transition between measurement contexts can be mapped onto the path that a quantum particle takes through an interferometer. Here, we investigate the relation between contextuality and the counterfactual gain observed in the output ports of such an interferometer when one of the paths is blocked. It is shown that experimental evidence of contextuality can only be obtained when counterfactual gain is observed for a specific combination of blocked path and output port. Using a silicon photonic integrated circuit, we experimentally observe the counterfactual gain for a selection of input states and evaluate the associated evidence for contextuality. The results confirm that contextuality can only be observed in the presence of counterfactual gain. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The past decade has witnessed a groundbreaking rise of machine learning for human language analysis, with current methods capable of automatically accurately recovering various aspects of syntax and semantics — including sentence structure and grounded word meaning — from large data collections. Recent research showed the promise of such tools for analyzing acoustic communication in nonhuman species. We posit that machine learning will be the cornerstone of future collection, processing, and analysis of multimodal streams of data in animal communication studies, including bioacoustic, behavioral, biological, and environmental data. Cetaceans are unique non-human model species as they possess sophisticated acoustic communications, but utilize a very different encoding system that evolved in an aquatic rather than terrestrial medium. Sperm whales, in particular, with their highly-developed neuroanatomical features, cognitive abilities, social structures, and discrete click-based encoding make for an excellent starting point for advanced machine learning tools that can be applied to other animals in the future. This paper details a roadmap toward this goal based on currently existing technology and multidisciplinary scientific community effort. We outline the key elements required for the collection and processing of massive bioacoustic data of sperm whales, detecting their basic communication units and language-like higher-level structures, and validating these models through interactive playback experiments. The technological capabilities developed by such an undertaking are likely to yield cross-applications and advancements in broader communities investigating non-human communication and animal behavioral research. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The k nearest neighbor (kNN) is a traditional supervised classifier used in data mining tasks. However, when used in real applications, mainly in a dataset with class imbalance or class overlap, kNN suffers with problems in accuracy performance. In this paper, we propose three prototype selection methods using self-organizing maps (SOM) and information entropy to increase the effectiveness of the kNN classifier in datasets with these conditions. The methods, named SOMEntropyKnn, were able to increase the effectiveness of the kNN classifier in all the 14 datasets used in the experiment, increasing the accuracy performance from datasets with imbalance or overlap problems.

Experience sharing between cooperative reinforcement learning agents

The idea of experience sharing between cooperative agents naturally emerges from our understanding of how humans learn. Our evolution as a species is tightly linked to the ability to exchange learned knowledge with one another. It follows that experience sharing (ES) between autonomous and independent agents could become the key to accelerate learning in cooperative multiagent settings. We investigate if randomly selecting experiences to share can increase the performance of deep reinforcement learning agents, and propose three new methods for selecting experiences to accelerate the learning process. Firstly, we introduce Focused ES, which prioritizes unexplored regions of the state space. Secondly, we present Prioritized ES, in which temporal-difference error is used as a measure of priority. Finally, we devise Focused Prioritized ES, which combines both previous approaches. The methods are empirically validated in a control problem. While sharing randomly selected experiences between two Deep Q-Network agents shows no improvement over a single agent baseline, we show that the proposed ES methods can successfully outperform the baseline. In particular, the Focused ES accelerates learning by a factor of 2, reducing by 51% the number of episodes required to complete the task. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This work presents a practical evaluation of an Android app developed for grounding resistance estimation of typical transmission line (TL) towers arrangement. Such arrangements, composed by counterpoise cables, are evaluated for a two-layered soil model by a trained artificial neural network (ANN), which derives in a significative low computational cost for the solution problem. The developed algorithm is evaluated with measurements made in TL towers and compared to the solution provided by a rigorous numerical routine. The results indicate a good accuracy, with median and standard deviation lower than 7%, of the developed app for conditions where the input parameters have values within the range used to training ANN. Values outside the specified range can reach significative errors up to 5 and 17 times, respectively, for median and standard deviation.

We introduce a two-parameter approximate counter-diabatic term into the Hamiltonian of the transverse-field Ising model for quantum annealing to accelerate convergence to the solution, generalizing an existing single-parameter approach. The protocol is equivalent to unconventional diabatic control of the longitudinal and transverse fields in the transverse-field Ising model and thus makes it more feasible for experimental realization than an introduction of new terms such as nonstoquastic catalysts toward the same goal of performance enhancement. We test the idea for the p-spin model with p=3, which has a first-order quantum phase transition, and show that our two-parameter approach leads to significantly larger ground-state fidelity and lower residual energy than those by traditional quantum annealing and by the single-parameter method. We also find a scaling advantage in terms of the time-to-solution as a function of the system size in a certain range of parameters as compared to the traditional methods in the sense that an exponential time complexity is reduced to another exponential complexity with a smaller coefficient. Although the present method may not always lead to a drastic exponential speedup in difficult optimization problems, it is useful because of its versatility and applicability for any problem after a simple algebraic manipulation, in contrast to some other powerful prescriptions for acceleration such as nonstoquastic catalysts in which one should carefully study in advance if it works in a given problem and should identify a proper way to meticulously control the system parameters to achieve the goal, which is generally highly nontrivial.

Computer vision systems allow digital reconstruction of targets by capturing information through remote sensors such as video cameras and scanners. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the capacity and quality of three-dimensional reconstruction of static targets using the ZED stereoscopic camera. For this goal, we took images of several environments and objects with different surfaces, textures, lighting, distances and acquisition speeds. The results were compared with high-density and high precision point clouds obtained from the targets using a Leica Viva TS15 total station. The data were processed in the CloudCompare software to calculate the displacement between the models generated by the camera and the total station. Under certain circumstances, this technology is able to reconstruct three-dimensional objects and environments with an error of a few centimeters. © 2018 IEEE.

Network configuration, performance, and congestion impact the Quality of Service (QoS) of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). Moreover, LMSs composing modules have different QoS demands for each activity. Upon a network, they compete for resources with applications for social media, streaming, chat, cloud file synchronization, games, among others. Eventually, the network congestion can leave the LMS service unavailable for students and professors. Recently, the popularization of Software Defined Networks (SDN) revolutionized the network management. We propose SDN4Moodle, a toolset to increase the QoS of Moodle services. SDN4Moodle was implemented in conformity to Moodle's plugin guidelines, and it is controlled by internal Moodle events. Each action performed by a Moodle's user is dynamically translated into network forwarding rules, and switches configuration. Our experimental results indicates SDN4Moodle, an open-source system, efficiently achieves flows isolation and bandwidth control on shared networks.

The success of cloud computing technology has leveraged the emergence of a large number of new companies providing cloud computing services. Choosing which cloud providers are the most suitable to attend consumers desired quality of service has become a hard problem. In order to qualify such providers, performance indicators (PIs) are useful tools for systematic and synthesized information collection. Thus, the problem approached in this work is to find the best set of cloud computing providers that satisfies a customer's request, with the least amount of providers and the lowest price. Hence, this work proposes a hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) to address this problem. In experiments, three approaches, using PIs as input, are employed: a simple matching algorithm, a GA and the proposed hybrid matching-GA approach. The hybrid method combines the qualities of both the matching algorithm and the GA showing promising results.
