The aim of this study was to test the correlation between a two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) biomechanical photogrammetric model, with inspiratory and expiratory lung capacities in adolescents. This was a cross sectional study, in which 40 adolescents of both genders were assessed, aged between 14 and 17 years old. Anthropometric data were collected (body mass, height and thorax length). Then, three tests were performed for forced vital capacity (FVC) in the supine position, using a spirometer. For FVC proof assessments, the volunteers were subjected to a mapping of body structures with adhesive markers and, after the test, one was selected with better respiratory performance for computational analysis of photogrammetric thoracoabdominal mobility. The results showed average values of 15.40, 61.29, 1.66 and 25.54, for age (years), body mass (kg), height (m) and thorax length (cm), respectively. The analysis found respiratory values of: 3:22 l for forced expiratory volume in one second, 3.87 l for forced vital capacity, 6.50 l/s for peak expiratory flow and 3.59 l for deep inspiration. The correlation showed better values for 3D photogrammetry as compared to 2D. The inclusion of the third dimension has been applied in order to adequate photogrammetric methodology to existing kinematics analysis tools as videogrammetry computed and plethysmography. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Direct observation of symmetry-specific precession in a ferrimagnet

Here we demonstrate an experimental observation of GHz-scale spin dynamics resolved to sublattice octahedral (Oh) tetrahedral (Td) sites in a spinel ferrimagnet, in this case a Mn-ferrite thin film. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) are used, in combination with multiplet calculations, to uniquely identify the spectral signature from Mn2+ and Fe2+,3+ on Oh and Td lattice sites. With the sample under rf excitation, the spin alignment of the sublattices is tracked with time-resolved XMCD (TR-XMCD). The spin alignment of the sublattices is mostly antiferromagnetic. The phase difference between the Oh Fe2+ [Oh Fe3+] and Td Mn2+ sites is 181.2±3.8∘ [183.3∘±3.7∘] at 150 K and 186.6±2.2∘ [182.0∘±2.2∘] at 300 K. Such direct measurement of the dynamic coupling, exchange stiffness, and damping enabled by TR-XMCD across sublattices will be essential for optimizing the development of future-generation microwave devices.

Cancers arising from the oropharynx have become increasingly more studied in the past few years, as they are now epidemic domestically. These tumors are treated with definitive (chemo)radiotherapy, and have local recurrence as a primary mode of clinical failure. Recent data suggest that 'radiomics', or extraction of image texture analysis to generate mineable quantitative data from medical images, can reflect phenotypes for various cancers. Several groups have shown that developed radiomic signatures, in head and neck cancers, can be correlated with survival outcomes. This data descriptor defines a repository for head and neck radiomic challenges, executed via a Kaggle in Class platform, in partnership with the MICCAI society 2016 annual *** public challenges were designed to leverage radiomics and/or machine learning workflows to discriminate HPV phenotype in one challenge (HPV status challenge) and to identify patients who will develop a local recurrence in the primary tumor volume in the second one (Local recurrence prediction challenge) in a segmented, clinically curated anonymized oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) data set.

In the age of information explosion, efficiently categorizing the topic of a document can assist our organization and comprehension of the vast amount of text. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named DKV, for document categorization using distributed real-valued vector representation of keywords learned from neural networks. Such a representation can project rich context information (or embedding) into the vector space, and subsequently be used to infer similarity measures among words, sentences, and even documents. Using a Chinese news corpus containing over 100,000 articles and five topics, we provide a comprehensive performance evaluation to demonstrate that by exploiting the keyword embeddings, DKV paired with support vector machines can effectively categorize a document into the predefined topics. Results demonstrate that our method can achieve the best performances compared to several other approaches.

The construction of multi-scale image pyramids is used in state-of-the-art methods that perform robust object recognition, such as SIFT and SURF. However, building such image pyramids is computationally expensive, especially when implementations in embedded systems with limited computing resources are considered. Therefore, the use of alternative less expensive approaches are necessary if near real-time operation is desired. Previous work has reported that using binomial filters to construct half-octave multi-scale pyramids consumes only 1=4 of the processing time of the Gaussian pyramid originally used in the SIFT framework. Here we investigate how interest points detected using the binomial approach behave when compared to the Gaussian approach, focusing on repeatability. Experimental results show that in average up to 86% of interest points detected with the original SIFT pyramid building scheme are also detected when using the binomial method, despite of large gains in processing time. When rotation of image features is considered, experimental results demonstrate that slightly superior repeatability of interest points is achieved using the binomial pyramid.

Three-dimensional models have been used to aid medical diagnoses, using images generated by modalities like Magnetic Resonance Imaging. They can provide a more complete vision of objects since their depth is taken into account. Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has also been used to aid the diagnosis. One important step in Three-dimensional CBIR (Model Retrieva) systems is the comparison between two models by using a set of features extracted and stored in a database. In this paper we present a novel method to compare two models, using the Bipartite graphs technique, with the aim to improve the retrieval precision. This technique retrieves 3D medical models of the left ventricle in order to aid the diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure. Results showed that the novel method improved the precision by 10% when compared to the Similarity Function of Euclidean and Manhattan distance. These results confirmed that bipartite graph techniques can be used to improve the accuracy of Model Retrieval systems.

Many normal and pathological biological processes involve the migration of epithelial cell sheets. This arises from complex emergent behaviour resulting from the interplay between cellular signalling networks and the forces that physically couple the cells. Here, we demonstrate that collective migration of an epithelium can be interactively guided by applying electric fields that bias the underlying signalling networks. We show that complex, spatiotemporal cues are locally interpreted by the epithelium, resulting in rapid, coordinated responses such as a collective U-turn, divergent migration, and unchecked migration against an obstacle. We observed that the degree of external control depends on the size and shape of the cell population, and on the existence of physical coupling between cells. Together, our results offer design and engineering principles for the rational manipulation of the collective behaviour and material properties of a tissue.

As a sterilization technique, the hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization is generally used. The hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization can not be used in food sterilization for the use of toxic hydrogen peroxide. Example of other sterilization techniques, the atmospheric pressure plasma sterilization has been attempted. By the way, studies have been attempted for application to sterilization techniques of PBII technology. Application to medical equipment is considered, because it uses harmless nitrogen or oxygen gas to sterilization using PBII. Sterilization using PBII is possible processing a short time at low temperatures. In this study, using the PBII sterilization technique using a harmless gas, the authors tried the application to the sterilization of food. Therefore, the authors examined the plasma generation technology suitable for the sterilization process by the measurement of the spectrum. Increase in the number of ions in the plasma was observed with the combination of RF burst plasma and self-ignited plasma. The authors evaluated sterilization processing by the number of living bacteria of the spore bearing bacterium about only self-ignition plasma and the combination of RF burst plasma and self-ignited plasma. © 2015 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.
