The problem of model selection arises in a number of contexts, such as subset selection in linear regression, estimation of structures in graphical models, and signal denoising. This paper studies non-asymptotic model selection for the general case of arbitrary (random or deterministic) design matrices and arbitrary nonzero entries of the signal. In this regard, it generalizes the notion of incoherence in the existing literature on model selection and introduces two fundamental measures of coherence- termed as the worst-case coherence and the average coherence-among the columns of a design matrix. It utilizes these two measures of coherence to provide an in-depth analysis of a simple, model-order agnostic one-step thresholding (OST) algorithm for model selection and proves that OST is feasible for exact as well as partial model selection as long as the design matrix obeys an easily verifiable property, which is termed as the coherence property. One of the key insights offered by the ensuing analysis in this regard is that OST can successfully carry out model selection even when methods based on convex optimization such as the lasso fail due to the rank deficiency of the submatrices of the design matrix. In addition, the paper establishes that if the design matrix has reasonably small worst-case and average coherence then OST performs near-optimally when either (i) the energy of any nonzero entry of the signal is close to the average signal energy per nonzero entry or (ii) the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement system is not too high. Finally, two other key contributions of the paper are that (i) it provides bounds on the average coherence of Gaussian matrices and Gabor frames, and (ii) it extends the results on model selection using OST to low-complexity, model-order agnostic recovery of sparse signals with arbitrary nonzero entries. This paper presents a comparison among different strategies to coordinate the use of heterogeneous wireless sensors aimed for area surveillance. The heterogeneity among the sensor nodes is related to their sensing and mobility capabilities. The goal of the strategies is to provide coordination among the different nodes, in order to make the wireless sensor network perform its missions with higher efficiency. Strategies combine advantages of bio-inspired and utility-based approaches to coordination. Simulations of scenarios with different characteristics were performed and the results are compared and analyzed. © 2010 IEEE.

In the fall of 2009, a college of engineering and applied science at a public, Rocky Mountain region university embarked on a new inclusive excellence initiative called Broadening Opportunity through Leadership & Diversity (BOLD). The BOLD Center is a new K-16 organizational structure to increase the performance, representation and retention through graduation of students who are underrepresented in engineering, including women, students of color, low income and first generation college attendees. A BOLD Center focus of concern is the declining retention rate of women that has dipped below that of men recently in our College. A survey consisting of 41 questions was distributed to all undergraduate engineering women in the college that incorporates scales from the Assessing Women in engineering (AWE) assessment and from the Academic Pathways of People Learning engineering Survey (APPLES). Five research questions were posed in the survey design: • Do women express a loss of interest during their program? • Is there a chilly climate for women in the college? • Do women?s self-efficacy levels change during the program? • Do academic performance levels play a role in women?s retention in engineering? • Do women have an adequate support structure in the college? The survey generated 116 responses from 2 solicitations, with women students represented from every major across all four undergraduate years. An unintended outcome was that the sample largely consists of women with high grade point averages. Thus, this paper offers insight on top performing women?s self-efficacy and their views on the college climate, the benefits from various support systems - advising, mentoring, social and financial - and the existing programming and initiatives that can play a role in their achievements. The results indicate that women students are interested and efficacious with respect to obtaining an engineering degree, and that the college climate is, on average, warm and accepting. Howev

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches. ©2010 IEEE.

Wafer bonding technology is applied to the GaN/quantum dots/GaN system, where CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots serve as both the active layer and the binding layer. Photoluminescence is observed from quantum dots following wafer bonding at various temperatures under ultra high vacuum condition. Temperature dependences of bond strength and photoluminescence properties are characterized. Annealing at elevated temperature to form wafer bonds degrades photoluminescence intensity and slightly blue shifts the wavelength. Transmission Electron Microscopy is applied to study the physical properties of vacuum annealed QDs, in which agglomeration is observed. ©The Electrochemical Society.

Crystal growth of Rb2CdI4 was performed by Czochralski method. Transparent colourless crystals with monoclinic structure were obtained. Temperature dependence of the dielectric constant along the b-axis was measured with variation of frequency. The thermal expansions x i (i = a, b, c and a′;a′ = a + c) along the four independent axes were measured both by clip-type strain-gauge dilatometer and X-ray diffraction methods. These results show distinct anomalies associated with the ferroelectric transition at TC= 210 K. Copyright © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This paper deals with the routing optimization in IPV6 networks. It's the key processes of traffic engineering and network planning. Routing optimization provides a means to balance the traffic load in the network with the goal to improve the quality of service. The main objective of our routing optimization procedures is the minimization of the end-to-end delay, which is the total time of an individual packet to transfer from source to destination node. By optimized one of router's functions, this function is the packet classification. This work is done modify the packet classification operation in the router architecture by making it based on two tuples (source address and flow label) instead of the regular five tuples to classify the coming packets. Finally, to test and compare the performance of our algorithm, we used the network simulator NS-2,version 2.29. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm indeed helps to minimize the end-to-end delay as a result of router optimization.

In this paper, a large scale Medium Voltage DC all-electric ship integrated power system is modeled from the prime mover (gas turbine) to the propulsion load. This system has a three-phase 21MW synchronous machine as a main generator and a three-phase 19MW induction motor as a main propulsion drive. The influence of propeller emergence on both electrical and mechanical components of the system is investigated.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.
