Low-temperature spin Seebeck effect in nonmagnetic vanadium dioxide

The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is sensitive to thermally driven magnetic excitations in magnetic insulators. Vanadium dioxide in its insulating low-temperature phase is expected to lack magnetic degrees of freedom, as vanadium atoms are thought to form singlets upon dimerization of the vanadium chains. Instead, we find a paramagnetic SSE response in VO2 films that grows as the temperature decreases below 50 K. The field and temperature-dependent SSE voltage is qualitatively consistent with a general model of paramagnetic SSE response and inconsistent with triplet spin transport. Quantitative estimates find a spin Seebeck coefficient comparable in magnitude to that observed in strongly magnetic materials. The microscopic nature of the magnetic excitations in VO2 requires further examination.

electrical muscle stimulation demonstrates potential for restoring functional movement and for preventing muscle atrophy after spinal cord injury (SCI). To optimize delivery of electrical stimulation protocols, an accurate and easy-to-implement mathematical skeletal muscle model is essential. The existing models are either accurate but complex, making them hard to implement, such as the Hill-Huxley-type model, or simple but inaccurate, such as second order model. In this paper, we propose a Wiener-Hammerstein system to model the paralyzed skeletal muscle dynamics under electrical stimulus conditions. The proposed model has substantial advantages in identification algorithm analysis and implementation including computational complexity and convergence. Experimental data sets were collected on soleus muscles under 15 Hz frequency stimulation for fourteen subjects with SCI. The simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the Hill-Huxley-type model not only in peak force prediction, but also in fitting performance for force output of each individual stimulation train. © 2009 IFAC.

In this paper we present a new computational primitive for convolution using coupled oscillator arrays. It is based on a Degree of Match (DOM) operation for pairs of vectors of analog voltage encoded data. The convolution operation is synthesized from these DOM circuits and computes the precise mathematical convolution of the two vectors. We present an example circuit design for the DOM operator and SPICE simulations of the circuit behavior. A MATLAB model is curve fit to an inverted copy of this output and shown to be roughly equivalent to the square of the Euclidian distance between the vectors. Using a parameterized version of this model we conducted a MATLAB study to analyze the accuracy of the DOM and convolution operations under variations in oscillator array symmetry, locking range, and additive noise. We also show a small example of convolution with an edge enhancement filter.

Fruit flies become one of the most worrisome insect species to fruit yields. AlertTrap proposes and tests the constituent components to construct an efficient autonomous trap which sends notification to farmers when the number of flies exceeds a predefined threshold. The trap is powered with solar panels, equipped with a Lynfield-inspired sticky trap that is optimized to be attractive to fruit flies and controlled by an Arduino Board to collect data and circulate the energy through the system. The fruit flies are then counted on a Raspberry Pi Board by YOLOv4-tiny and SSD-MobileNet object detection algorithms with over 95% average precision at IoU threshold of 0.5 and an alert signal is sent to the farmers based on the number of fruit flies in the trap. © 2021 IEEE.

We have developed a method of catalyst preparation for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth that uses solid-state diffusion to precipitate Co particles in a Cu matrix and control the size and size distribution of catalyst particles. Copper is an excellent electrical and thermal conductor, and has a small or negligible solubility for Co. Cu–Co alloys of approximately 5 atm% Co were formed in bulk by splat quenching the liquid alloy and on Si substrates by e-beam evaporation of the alloy, sputtering of the alloy, and sputter deposition of thin films of pure Cu and Co. The Co easily precipitates from dilute solutions of Cu–Co with heat treatment. These alloys and films were used to generate uniform distributions of Co precipitates, and CNTs were successfully grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) and thermal CVD on the materials. These alloys can be patterned by photolithography and sputtering in order to grow CNTs in defined locations. Therefore, the technique is amenable to very large scale silicon integration for field emission applications. The results of this work and data from field emission studies are presented herein.

We propose a flexible white-light system for high-speed visible-light communication(VLC)applications,which consists of a semipolar blue InGaN/GaN single-quantum-well micro-light-emitting diode(LED)on a flexible substrate pumping green CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum-dot(PQD)paper in nanostructure form and red CdSe QD *** highest bandwidth for CsPbBr3 PQD paper,229 MHz,is achieved with a blue micro-LED pumping source and a high data transmission rate of 400 Mbps;this is very promising for VLC *** 817 MHz maximum bandwidth and a 1.5 Gbps transmission speed are attained by the proposed semipolar blue *** proposed flexible white light system and the high-bandwidth PQD paper could pave the way for VLC wearable devices.

There are many different temperament tuning theories such as "Pythagorean tuning," "Just intonation," and "Equal temperament." Among them, the equal temperament is the most popular one for its key compatibility in spite of the general dissonance from its harmonic structure. And that dissonance is the reason that no other chords except octaves sound perfectly harmonically in equal temperament tuning. We propose a tuning system for sound synthesis using equal temperament that maximizes the consonance of the chords. By removing dissonance (such as in beating and roughness) and rearranging the harmonic structure, it is possible to achieve more consonant sound, which is only possible in computer based sound synthesis. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, listening tests were carried out with the most popular chords, i.e. perfect 5th, major 3rd and major 6th, on virtual instruments of piano, violin, flute, and synthesized electric piano sounds. They confirmed that the all the modified chords, especially major 3rd and major 6th , using the proposed algorithm sounded more harmonic than the original ones. We believe that the harmonicity and consonance can be improved in commercial applications such as ring tone synthesis.

the wireless ad hoc network is attracting more and more research attentions because of its infrastructureless character. A number of routing algorithms are proposed for multi-hop ad hoc networks. There is a debate in the literature that a period of route information initialization, which is defined as the initial determination of necessary route information before the transmission of real data packets, should help to improve the performance of pure on-demand routing algorithms for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we study how route information initialization affects the performance of two on-demand routing algorithms for ad hoc networks, DSR and AODV. We examined the effects of various duration of initialization time upon performance, and the effects of fixed-duration of initialization with various mobility patterns upon performance. Through simulations as well as analysis, we find that under a certain network condition, there is an optimal value of initialization duration to get the best end-to-end delay without degradation of packet delivery rate and increase of the message overhead for DSR routing protocol, while the best value does not exist for AODV. In addition, we also find that the route information initialization does help to improve DSR's end-to-end delay almost without degradation of its delivery rate for low mobility networks, however, it does not bring benefits to AODV under most circumstances.

Capital market transactions provide an opportunity for investors to acquire ownership of company shares and capital gains, as well as dividends. However, alongside the benefits, there are risks of capital loss and liquidation, leading to stress and depression due to profit targets and decision-making errors. To mitigate the risk of decision-making errors in investment, data analysis is needed, including sentiment analysis, which influences stock prices. This study aims to develop a new deep learning model to classify Indonesian public opinion on JCI stocks, especially the Energy sector, obtained from the Twitter social media platform. The model will perform sentiment analysis and categorize opinions as negative, neutral, or positive. We created a dataset that was trained using Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) to summarize the analysis of public sentiment above so that it can assist investors in studying public sentiment as a reference for investing with a yield precision of 76%, Recall of 77%, and F1-score on 76%. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a comparison among different strategies to coordinate the use of heterogeneous wireless sensors aimed for area surveillance. The heterogeneity among the sensor nodes is related to their sensing and mobility capabilities. The goal of the strategies is to provide coordination among the different nodes, in order to make the wireless sensor network perform its missions with higher efficiency. Strategies combine advantages of bio-inspired and utility-based approaches to coordination. Simulations of scenarios with different characteristics were performed and the results are compared and analyzed. © 2010 IEEE.
