Nowadays, applications involving multiple robotic systems connected through a wireless network - to perform tasks together - have an increased research interest. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are excellent tools for evaluating and surveying distributed robotic systems applications due to their flexibility and three-dimensional mobility capability. Cooperative systems composed of multiples UAVs may have a centralized coordination which assists the members of a team to make their decisions in a distributed manner regarding the tasks to be performed. This paper proposes a system composed of embedded hardware and a high-level communication protocol that serves as a basis for identifying, distributing, and allocating tasks in a simple and distributed way to be used by groups of UAVs. The proposal is evaluated in a search and rescue scenario. The setup is configured with two types of UAVs - namely, searchers (search for new tasks) and workers (execution of tasks). Also, a set of nine simulation experiments covering three different setups were performed. Then the proposal is evaluated by two sets of field experiments with real vehicles. The obtained results in the proposed experiments demonstrate that the system can be successfully used in the proposed scenario for task distribution and allocation. © 2021 IEEE.

We report an observation of essentially full spatial coherence in a high average power soft-x-ray laser. Rapid coherence buildup due to strong refractive antiguiding in a long plasma column is experimentally demonstrated. This allows the generation of fully coherent, milliwatt-level average power soft-x-ray radiation by a tabletop device. The peak brightness of this laser reaches 2×1025photonss−1mm−2mrad−2 within 0.01% spectral bandwidth, making it one of the brightest soft-x-ray sources available.

In this paper, the unique nature of direction finding in an RF environment against an uncooperative emitter is presented. Specifically, the focus is on power management in a wireless antenna array. This paper will present two competing methods of power management. Both methods will use a Least Mean Squares (LMS) adaptive beamforming algorithm to compensate for grating lobes that are present in the arrays of this type. The first method creates a subset of sensors from a randomly distributed antenna array. This method uses data exclusively from these elements and increases the number of iterations until the desired beam is formed. The second method creates a new subset of sensors, from a randomly distributed array, for each iteration, until the desired beam is formed. The second method is observed to provide better power management across the sensor network. In addition it will be shown that the later technique also yields a substantially better defined beamwidth with reduced grating lobes for all of the frequencies simulated.

We present an evolutionary algorithm for the inference of context-free grammars from positive and negative examples. The algorithm is based on genetic programming and uses a local optimization operator that is capable of improving the learning task. Ordinary genetic operators are modified so as to bias the search. The system was evaluated using Tomitas language examples and results were compared with another similar approach. Results show that the proposed approach is promising and more robust than the other one.

We experimentally demonstrate reduced dimensionality in a interacting ensemble of emitters. The well-known stretched exponential decay dynamics, (Equation presented) with β = 0.5 in 3D geometries, is strikingly modified in a nanophotonic environment that supports long-range interaction to β ~ 0.3. © Optica Publishing Group 2023.

The electrical engineering program at the Milwaukee School of engineering (MSOE) has integrated a bilateral faculty teaching component into its international student exchange program. Considerable flexibility was needed to adjust to faculty availability and the major differences in academic calendars between the two institutions. Specifically, MSOE is a private institution on a quarter system and its partner university is the Lübeck University of applied sciences in Lübeck, Germany which utilizes the semester system and is a state university. Among the problems that needed to be overcome is that the semester versus quarter systems simply didn't align and neither institution has the resources to allow faculty absences for an entire academic year. At the Lübeck University of applied sciences the MSOE faculty generally teach a short intensive 2 week course at the end of the spring semester. An appropriate number of credits and associated grade are given and entered on both university transcripts. The Lübeck university faculty visit MSOE in the fall quarter to participate in the project defense of their own students who perform their Diplom Arbeit (senior thesis project) at a company generally in the Milwaukee region. During the visit the Lübeck faculty also provide a series of special topic lectures in various courses depending on the expertise of the faculty member. The benefits of the faculty exchange are many. Not just does the experience foster a stronger bond to the partner abroad, but the presence of the faculty serves to assure the students that the home institution is paying attention to their welfare and academic progress. The most essential thing we have come to believe is that while good academics are essential to a program, it is the relationships between the people involved in the program that determines a truly successful international program. The faculty exchange aspect has become a lynchpin of our exchange program. © American Society for engineering Ed

Efforts to map atomic-scale chemistry at low doses with minimal noise using electron microscopes are fundamentally limited by inelastic ***,fused multi-modal electron microscopy offers high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)recovery of material chemistry at nano-and atomic-resolution by coupling correlated information encoded within both elastic scattering(high-angle annular dark-field(HAADF))and inelastic spectroscopic signals(electron energy loss(EELS)or energy-dispersive x-ray(EDX)).By linking these simultaneously acquired signals,or modalities,the chemical distribution within nanomaterials can be imaged at significantly lower doses with existing detector *** many cases,the dose requirements can be reduced by over one order of *** high SNR recovery of chemistry is tested against simulated and experimental atomic resolution data of heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Sleep is the natural state of relaxation for human being. Sleep quality is an essential yet frequently neglected aspect of sleep in general. Sleep quality is essential because it allows the body to restore itself and prepare for the next day. The standard method for evaluating sleep quality was subjective evaluation. Actigraphy devices, which can measure the sleep cycle, are now widely available. This study developed a method using Fuzzy Logic and an actigraphy device to measure and classify sleep quality. The fuzzy logic method was developed in several stages, which are determining the sleep quality measurement parameters, constructing the fuzzy set for each input variable, and developing the fuzzy rules. To evaluate the proposed fuzzy model, five individuals were invited to participate in the experiment and required to complete the PSQI subjective sleep questionnaire. The evaluation result shows that our proposed Fuzzy model achieves lower error compared to the existing method.
