This work considers Artificial Immune Systems to solve the economic load dispatch problem. The Immune Systems are based on the clonal selection principle. Cultural Algorithms using normative, situational, historical and topographical knowledge sources are used to improve the global optimization property of immune systems. A new main influence function is proposed which improves the results obtained by the cultural version. All the proposed approaches have several points of self-adaptation and use a local search operator that is based on a quasi-simplex technique. The Immune System and its cultural versions are validated in test problems that consider 13 and 40 thermal generators and take into account valve-point loading effects. They are also validated in a test problem with 20 thermal generators, valve-point loading effects and transmission losses. The proposed cultural method including the new influence function outperforms other modern metaheuristics reported in recent literature, finding the minimum fuel cost value for all test systems.

Recently, Bitcoin is becoming one of the most popular decentralized cryptographic currency technologies, and Bitcoin mining is a process of adding transaction records to Bitcoin’s public ledger of past transactions or blockchain. To obtain a bitcoin, the mining process involves compiling recent transactions into blocks and trying to solve a computationally difficult puzzle, e.g., proof of work puzzle. A proof of work allows miners the ability to quantify how much work a given proof contains. Basically, the required time for mining is decided in advance, but problems will occur if the value is large for dispersion. In this paper, we first accept that the required time between consecutive blocks follows the exponential distribution. That is, the variance is stable as long as the expected time is fixed. Then, we focus on the graph clique mining technique proposed by the literature, like Tromp (BITCOIN 2015) and Bag-Ruj-Sakurai (Inscrypt 2015), which is based on a computational difficulty problem of searching cliques of undirected graphs, where a clique is a subset of vertices. In particular, when the clique size is two, graph clique mining can be used to gain Bitcoins. The previous work also claimed that if the clique size is parameterized and increased, even if the expected time is fixed, the variance would not be stable. However, no qualitative or quantitative results were given to support their claim. Motivated by this issue, in this work, we propose a simple search algorithm for graph cliques mining, and perform a small scale evaluation on Bitcoin and Graph cliques’s solo mining to investigate the variance issue. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper proposes the development of a fuzzy predictive control. Genetic algorithms (GA's) are used to automatically tune the controller. A recurrent neural network is used to identify the process, and then provides predictions about the process behavior, based on control actions applied to the system. These predictions are used by the fuzzy controller, in order to accomplish a better control of an alcoholic fermentation process from chemical industry. This problem has been chosen due to its non-linearity and large accommodation time, that make it hard to control by standard controllers. Comparison of performance is made with non-predictive approaches(PID and Fuzzy-PD), and also with another predictive approach, GPC(Generalized Predictive Control).

Hierarchical B-frame Video Coding Using Two-Layer CANF without Motion Coding

Typical video compression systems consist of two main modules: motion coding and residual coding. This general architecture is adopted by classical coding schemes (such as international standards H.265 and H.266) and deep learning-based coding schemes. We propose a novel B-frame coding architecture based on two-layer Conditional Augmented Normalization Flows (CANF). It has the striking feature of not transmitting any motion information. Our proposed idea of video compression without motion coding offers a new direction for learned video coding. Our base layer is a low-resolution image compressor that replaces the full-resolution motion compressor. The low-resolution coded image is merged with the warped high-resolution images to generate a high-quality image as a conditioning signal for the enhancement-layer image coding in full resolution. One advantage of this architecture is significantly reduced computational complexity due to eliminating the motion information compressor. In addition, we adopt a skip-mode coding technique to reduce the transmitted latent samples. The rate-distortion performance of our scheme is slightly lower than that of the state-of-the-art learned B-frame coding scheme, B-CANF, but outperforms other learned B-frame coding schemes. However, compared to B-CANF, our scheme saves 45% of multiply–accumulate operations (MACs) for encoding and 27% of MACs for decoding. The code is available at https://***. Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease (NCD) that causes global concern, high costs and a high number of deaths. Internet of Things, Ubiquitous Computing, and Cloud Computing enable the development of systems for remote and real-time monitoring of patients affected with NCDs like hypertension. This paper reports on a system for monitoring hypertension patients that was built by employing these techniques. This system allows the vital signs of a patient (blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature) to be captured via sensors built in a wearable device similar to a wristwatch. These signals are transmitted to the patient's mobile device for processing, and the generated clinical data are sent to the cloud to be properly presented and analysed by the health professionals responsible for the patient. To deal with semantic interoperability issues that arise when multiple different devices and system components must interoperate, a semantic model was conceived for this system in terms of ontologies for diseases and devices. This paper also presents the semantic module that we developed and implemented in the cloud to perform reasoning based on this model, demonstrating the potential benefits of incorporating semantic technologies in our system. Characteristic variability induced by process variation effect (PVE) is one of technological challenges in semiconductor industry. In this work, we computationally study electrical characteristic and power fluctuations induced by six factors of PVE of the gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanosheet (NS) complementary field-effect-transistors (CFETs) which are formed by vertically stacking n-FET on top of p-FET. Among the six factors, NS thickness (TNS), NS width (WNS), and gate length (LG) are identified as crucial factors contributing to large variations in device characteristics. The p-FET exhibits substantial off-state current fluctuation (about 151%) due to the bottom parasitic channel leakages. Compared with the magnitudes of dynamic and short circuit powers, the static power is marginal, but it possesses the largest fluctuation (up to 148%). If we assume that each factor of PVE has the same probability distribution as the others and all are mutually independent, the statistical sum of their power fluctuations will exhibit more than 50% overestimations, compared with the results when all factors are considered simultaneously. © 2020 IEEE.
