Conventional hyperspectral cameras cascade lenses and spectrometers to acquire the spectral datacube,which forms the fundamental framework for hyperspectral ***,this cascading framework involves tradeoffs among spectral and imaging performances when the system is driven toward ***,we propose a spectral singlet lens that unifies optical imaging and computational spectrometry functions,enabling the creation of minimalist,miniaturized and high-performance hyperspectral *** a paradigm,we capitalize on planar liquid crystal optics to implement the proposed framework,with each liquid-crystal unit cell acting as both phase modulator and electrically tunable spectral *** with various targets show that the resulting millimeter-scale hyperspectral camera exhibits both high spectral fidelity(>95%)and high spatial resolutions(~1.7 times the diffraction limit).The proposed“two-in-one”framework can resolve the conflicts between spectral and imaging resolutions,which paves a practical pathway for advancing hyperspectral imaging systems toward miniaturization and portable applications.

This study introduces "CapSight,"a system for enhancing social interaction in visually impaired individuals. It includes a single-board computer, camera, vibration motors, and Bluetooth bone conduction headphones on a baseball cap. The camera identifies people using facial recognition and announces names through the headphones, with vibration motors indicating face positions. Users can add new friends by taking a photo and recording their name. This system helps visually impaired individuals recognize and locate social partners, boosting confidence and independence. © 2024 IEEE.

This study is related to a system that enables elderly people to communicate interactively with young people who use existing message exchange services by simply speaking to an avatar on a tablet PC, without having to perform complicated operations of the tablet PC. On the other hand, the young people side can bring in elderly people who could not previously participate in existing message exchange services groups. The effectiveness of the system was verified through demonstration experiments with two households consisting of elderly people in their 80s.

This research aims to construct a two-dimensional image to represent an underwater geometry map with a Side Scan Sonar (SSS) mounted on a Hybrid Autonomous Underwater Glider (HAUG). Building the underwater map has two stages of the process. The first stage is preprocessing which includes Time-varying gains (TVG), slant range correction, and ground range correction. The second is HAUG navigation, the movement of HAUG orientation to the angle and distance of SSS readings and plotting the geometry of the grid map. With these two stages, a two-dimensional grid map will be formed. Meanwhile, the 3D plot utilizes slant range and ground range correction to obtain the surface height of the bottom of the pool. From the experiments conducted to conduct mapping in the pool, two-dimensional and three-dimensional visual forms of the pool floor and pool walls were produced. The results of the estimated measurement of the width of the pool obtained 14.05 meters and the height of the pool 3.199 meters with an SSS beam angle of 58 degrees.

Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous contaminant in the indoor environment that is both a carcinogen and irritant. The goal of this project is to develop a smartphone-based app for use by citizen scientists or researchers that can be paired with low-cost colorimetric badges for detection of indoor formaldehyde. We conducted both national and geographically-targeted surveys prior to app design. We have subsequently developed the app and conducted a beta test. Surveys of 147 individuals indicated broad public interest in formaldehyde testing using smartphone technology. Testing of the badges indicated consistent change in illumination with increasing formaldehyde exposure. Beta testing indicated users were able to navigate the existing app, and highlighted areas for improvement including incorporation of public surveys. Planned future analysis includes extensive calibration testing and a community-based field test. © 2018 15th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2018. OBF (Orthonormal Basis Function) Fuzzy models have shown to be a promising approach to the areas of nonlinear system identification and control since they exhibit several advantages over those dynamic model topologies usually adopted in the literature. Although encouraging application results have been obtained, no automatic procedure had yet been developed to optimize the design parameters of these models. This paper elaborates on the use of a genetic algorithm (GA) especially designed for this task, in which a fitness function based on the Akaike information criterion plays a key role by considering both model accuracy and parsimony aspects. The use of linear (actually affine) and nonlinear local models is also investigated. The proposed methodology is evaluated in the modeling of a real nonlinear magnetic levitation system.

Strain-induced formation of self-assembled InGaN/GaN superlattices in nominal InGaN films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

In this work, we report the spontaneous formation of superlattice structures in nominal InGaN films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. A 700-nm-thick self-assembled In0.2Ga0.8N/GaN superlattice with excellent structural quality was achieved. Strain was studied as a possible driving force for the formation of self-assembled superlattice (SASL) structure by growth of InGaN on ZnO substrate using similar growth conditions. The SASL structures were optically characterized using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Structural characterization was conducted via transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. High-resolution x-ray diffraction (XRD) and XRD reciprocal space map were utilized to determine the average composition and the degree of relaxation of InGaN films. We propose that the vertical phase separation observed in the SASL structure is caused by high-temperature growth and intensified by strain. This work provides a method for engineering strain and growth of thick InGaN films for a variety of applications including solar cells and photodetectors.

Synthesis of novel material often times requires novel analysis and characterization techniques. The possibility of combining sputtering (SPU) and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) in the same chamber, Sputtering Atomic Layer Augmented Deposition (SALAD), has produced interesting meta-dielectric nanocomposite systems that have unique optical and electronic properties, which may find novel applications [1]. Scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) is a relatively novel characterization tool which permits assessment of local impedance. More recently, the utilization of microwaves in the near field regime has been an exciting topic in the field of high-resolution microscopy. We were able to demonstrate 1 nm resolution using scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) where a spontaneously forming water meniscus concentrated the microwave fields in small regions [2]. Here we analyzed numerically sMIM with Finite Element Method (FEM) to investigate complex metal-dielectric structures created in a SALAD system. sMIM measurements provide information on both real and imaginary parts of the reflected microwave signal, which can be associated with the local conductivity and permittivity. Yet, these quantities can be influenced by the local topography, so extraction of the electronic contribution is a challenge. In this work, we perform tip-surface distance scans in order to gain a better understanding of the substrate response and compare with the FEM results. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) optical fiber system has been studied using intensity-based optical time-domain reflectometry (i-OTDR). The fiber strain originated by sound waves (pressure waves) is in general quite small to enable the detection using conventional Rayleigh backscattering intensity based systems (low signal to noise ratio). Here, a 10 m portion of optical fiber has been rolled following a plane spiral shape in order increase the fiber surface subjected to the acoustic waves pressure and improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The performance of the system within the human voice frequency range (300-3400Hz) has been studied showing to effectively acquire voice signals at different points along a ～2.5 Km fiber.
